Jawaan ho ya budhiyaa ya nanhi si gudiyaa

Posted on: November 10, 2010

When one looks at old movies (all over the world, not just India),one finds that the idea of political correctness was not known at that time. Moreover, many of the ideas depicted in old movies would be regarded as highly objectionable today though they were regarded as normal.

Take this song from “Bhaabhi” (1957). From what I can guess, Jawahar Kaul is fed up with his demanding wife (played by Shyama). He vents his frustration through this song. And how ! The lyrics are highly misogynical. It brands the entire female gender as a bag of poison (zehar ki pudiya) even if the female in question is youthful or old or even a toddler. It is a very strong statement indeed, but one that was taken in its stride by the listeners at that time. I am not sure how the present day listeners may react to the lyrics of this song.

Here is this song from “Bhaabhi” (1957). This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Raja Gosavi and his chums.

Hindi movies have lots and lots of songs where love is expressed for the female of the species, and so here is a song which is an anti thesis to such songs.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and Chitragupta composed the music.

PS-I thank Mr Sadanand Kamath for identifying Raja Gosavi.

Song-Jawaan ho yaa budhiyaa (Bhaabhi) (1957) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics

jawaan ho yaa budhiyaa
ya nanhi si gudiyaa
kuchh bhi ho
aurat zehar ki hai pudiyaa
jawaan ho yaa budhiyaa
ya nanhi si gudiyaa
kuchh bhi ho
aurat zehar ki hai pudiyaa

maare pistol se
na kaate talwaar se
mard ko ghulaam ye
banaaye bade pyaar se
arre
maare pistol se
na kaate talwaar se
mard ko ghulaam ye
banaaye bade pyaar se
kabhi ikraar se
kabhi inkaar se
kabhi ikraar se
kabhi inkaar se
kajre ki dhaar se
yaa baalon ke singaar se
isiliye kahtaa hoon
daro daro naar se
daro daro naar se
jawaan ho yaa budhiyaa
ya nanhi si gudiyaa
kuchh bhi ho
aurat zehar ki hai pudiyaa

ho nahin sakta ye kaam Bhagwaan ka
nuskhaa zaroor ye to hogaa Shaitaan ka
ho nahin sakta ye kaam Bhagwaan ka
nuskhaa zaroor ye to hogaa Shaitaan ka
chaar boonden nakhraa
aath boonden jhagdaa
chaar boonden nakhraa
aath boonden jhagdaa
rooth baarah boonden
to solah boonden lafdaa
waah waah waah
kaisa banaayaa toone ragdaa
banaayaa toone ragdaa
jawaan ho yaa budhiyaa
ya nanhi si gudiyaa
kuchh bhi ho
aurat zehar ki hai pudiyaa

chalne mein tez
jaise suyi ghadiyaal ki
laaye ye nikaal ke
khabar paataal ki
chalne mein tez
jaise suyi ghadiyaal ki
laaye ye nikaal ke
khabar paataal ki
meethhi hai jubaan ki
jhoothhi hai jahaan ki
dil ki hai khoti to
kachchi bhhi hai kaan ki
kaali ho ya gori
hai bairi insaan ki
bairi insaan ki
jawaan ho yaa budhiyaa
ya nanhi si gudiyaa
kuchh bhi ho
aurat zehar ki hai pudiyaa
jawaan ho yaa budhiyaa
ya nanhi si gudiyaa
kuchh bhi ho
aurat zehar ki hai pudiyaa

In continuation :

As far as I know, in addition to BHABHI, Raja Gosavi worked in two more Hindi films – SCHOOL MASTER (1959) and PRIVATE SECRETARY (1962). He had songs in all the three films with three different playback singers – Rafi, Talat Mahmood and Manna Dey.
