I have listened to this song since my childhood, and it is one of those songs that left their permanent mark on my then impressionable mind.
Zaahidaa is in love with Sanjeev Kumar but family circumstances force her to agree to get married to a much older person with whom she feels no emotional attachment.
She sacrifices her happiness for the sake of family honour and then she sings this song full with poignancy. She is getting married into a rich family and she is going to lead a royal life full of happiness, that is what she tells her father in this song, but her internal sorrow beneath this show of external happiness cannot be concealed from anyone, be it her hapless father or her would be groom (Tarun Bose).
This song is sung superbly by Lata. The song is picturised on Zaahida and the picturisation certainly makes one’s heart go out to her.
The song is written by Indeewar and its music is composed by Roshan.
This movie “Anokhi Raat” (1968) was the last movie of Roshan and he died on this day (16 th november) on 1967, when he was at the zenith of his career. The songs of this movie, including this song went on to become hugely popular and remain so to this day.
On the occasion of Roshan’s death anniversary, here is this memorable song from his last movie, viz. “Anokhi Raat” (1968).

This is a lovely song, and I (and many others) wept when someone sang this song at a friend’s daughter’s wedding recently. Thanks for posting this song, Atul!

hi all
but i thought that the heroine was a double role in this movie. and that one Zaahida gets married to the villager Sanjeev Kumar. gets raped on her wedding night by some urban types and so commits sucide. so that turns Sanjeev Kumar into a Dacoit to avenge her death. and it is on one such round of dacoity that all these characters assemble in this haveli and thats y the title of the movie ” Anokhi Raat”

Yup that is true, Zaheeda doesn’t play one person, but two women who look alike. Sanjeev the dacoit is somewhat reformed by her resemblance to his beloved dead wife…Atul doesn’t watch these movies ha ha and so is sometimes led astray by his guesses or other wrong synopses online 😉

I have not watched the movie, but I am sure I will love this movie. Judging by the songs of the movie (which has given me a fair idea of the story) plus the star cast, this has to be a wonderful movie.
