Arzi hamaari ye marzi hamaari

Posted on: December 3, 2010

Most music lovers, including yours truly, are aware of only one song from “Naukri” (1954) and that song is the evergreen Chhota sa ghar hoga baadalon ki chhaaon me. But there are other songs in it that are created with the same amount of love and care and those songs are also wonderful to listen to, if we only care to listen to them. These days I am digging these songs out and I am finding that these forgotten songs are gems.

Here is a song from “Naukri” (1954). Here, Kishore Kumar, an umeployed youth looking for a job, is seen wooing a girl (Shiela Ramanai) living in the next building, with their respective windows facing each other. Kishore Kumar is typing our his job applications on his typewriter and wooing her, all at the same time.

Typewriter ? Yes,it may look like a laptop to new generation, but typewriter used to a very important equipment of offices. People who could afford it would buy typewriter for home use too, the way people now a days have laptops at home.

Shiela Ramani, like a good college going girl, is “studying”. Most parents would order their school/college going kids to study. But they would not bother to tell what exactly to study and how to study. In absence of any specific details, the kids would open a book before them and the parents would be satisfied. Shiela Ramani also has a book with her which she is purportedly studing. But her mind is clearly elsewhere. She obviously finds Kishore Kumar’s singing and wooing much more interesting than the study. She comes out and makes a show of studing there. She looks at Kishore Kumar when he is not looking and hurriedly looks away when Kishore Kumar looks in his direction.

Towards the end of the song, her father (played by Balraj Sahni), with handlebar mustache and wearing a vest (with a few holes in it) comes in and realises what is going on. And he orders his daughter to go and study inside.

This is a lovely song with cute picturisation. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar himself and this must be one of his lesser known classics. What superb lyrics by Shailendra ! And Salil Chaudhary excels in this composition as always.

Song-Arzi hamaari ye marzi hamaari (Naukri) (1954) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Salil Chaudhary

Lyrics

dear sir
sewa mein niwedan hai
arzi hamari
ye marzi hamaari
jo soche bina thukraaoge
dekho bade pachhtaaoge
arzi hamari
ye marzi hamaari
jo soche bina thukraaoge
dekho bade pachhtaaoge
dil hi hamaara
bacha na bechaara
to kispe ye teer chalaaoge
dil hi hamaara
bacha na bechaara
to kispe ye teer chalaaoge

suna hai
aapke yahaan koi jagah khaali hai
dekhen hai tumhaare sapne
sochi hai tumhaari baaten
dekha hai wo chanda jabse
aankhon mein guzaari raaten
dekhen hai tumhaare sapne
sochi hai tumhaari baaten
dekha hai wo chanda jabse
aankhon mein guzaari raaten
runjhun man mein dhoom machaake
haule haule
haule haule aake ye aag lagaake
jo aur kahin chale jaaoge
dekho bade pachtaaoge
dil hi hamaara bacha na bechaara
to kispe ye teer chalaaoge

as for my qualification
he he
certificate saath hain
jal jal ke ye dil nikhraa hai
jyun aag se nikhre sona
ham chhod chuke hain kabse
taqdeer ka rona dhona
jal jal ke ye dil nikhraa hai
jyun aag se nikhre sona
ham chhod chuke hain kabse
taqdeer ka rona dhona
man mein ummeed ke deep jalaake
jhilmil
jhilmil taare ye dil ke sahaare
jo parde inhin pe giraoge
dekho bade pachtaaoge
dil hi hamaara bacha na bechaara
to kispe ye teer chalaaoge
dil hi hamaara bacha na bechaara
to kispe ye teer chalaaoge
arzi hamari ye marzi hamaari
jo soche bina thukraaoge
dekho bade pachhtaaoge

Atul Ji, this song would also qualify to be tagged as a Mouth Organ song :).
