Most of the songs that Suraiyya sang in her career were picturised on herself. But there was a stage, in the beginning of her career,where she sang for other actresses too. It was during early 1940s.
At that time, Suraiyya herself was a minor and she was singing for acresses older than her ! The first playback singing that Suraiyya did was for Mehtab in “Shardaa” (1942). when Mehtaab found a thirteen year old girl, standing on a stool in order the reach upto the microphone, recording songs for her, she got mad- not at Suraiyya, but at her producers, of course (as Suraiyya laughingly clarified in a Vishesh Jaimala programme on Vividh Bharati three decades later). When the movie was released, the song became very popular and it was then that Mehtab got over her aversion over Suraiyya singing for her. Mehtaab then made sure that Suraiyya sang for her in several of her subsequent movies.
Here is this song where Suraiyya gave playback for the first time for an actress other than herself. This song is written by D N Madhok and music is given by Suraiyya’s mentor, Naushad.
PS-I am not entirely satisfied with the lyrics that I have noted down for this song, because they do not sound meaningful enough to me. I request my readers with keener ears to point out the errors/corrections in the lyrics.

Incidentally,this also happens to be the First recorded film song of Suraiya.

After I posted my last comment about this being the first recorded song of Suraiya,I read an interview of Naushad wherein he has mentioned that the song ‘Boot karoon mein polish’ from Kardar Production’s Nai Duniya (1942),by Suraiya was her Debut song. Both songs,being from Naushad,and both in 1942,it is very much possible that Nai Duniya was screened before Sharada but’ Panchi jaa peechche’ was recorded first and the film released after Nai Duniya.

I have heard an interview of Naushad, where he has talked about mentoring Suraiya and clearly stated that he first recorded her for for Nai Duniya.

Technically,you are right,because what comes on the screen first becomes debut song,and it hardly matters what was recorded before that.

However,I stand by my statement that the above song was her first recorded song as a playback singer,singing for actress Mehtab.It is a different matter that the recording for commercial record purpose,’Nai Dunia’ song,boot karun mai polish(with record No.N-26055) was done before the above song’s commercial recording(with record no.260990).
