Haay taqdeer meri haay taqdeer meri

Posted on: June 30, 2011

“Jal Tarang” (1949) is an obscure movie starring Rehman,Geeta Bali,Shashikala,Ram Singh,Rajan Haksar,Shyama etc.

This movie had music by Husnlal Bhagatram who were at the peak of their musical prowess at that time. I have infact already discussed as many as 23 Husnlal Bhagatram’s compositions from seven movies released that year.Indeed Husnlal Bhagatram must have been the most influential music director at that time, going by the quality of their output. But it was in the same year that another pair of music directors, viz.Shankar Jaikishan had made a big splash with “Barsaat”(1949) and soon they would take over as the most prolific and successful music directors of the golden era.

As far as 1949 was concerned, it was Husnlal Bhagatram’s name that sold the most movie songs records as well as movies.

Here is a song from “Jal Tarang”(1949). This song is sung by Lata. Lyricist is Lekhraj Bhakri, who I assume must be the brother of Mulkraj Bhakri, who had also written lyrics in this movie. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on Lekhraj Bhakri and Mulkraj Bhakri.

Since this movie had Geeta Bali as well as Shyama in it, I cannot tell for sure who lip synced this song on screen. Any information on this matter will be much appreciated.

Song-Haay taqdeer meri haay taqdeer meri (Jal Tarang) (1949) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Lekhraj Bhakri, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram

Lyrics

dil ki duniya ko basaaya thhaa badi mushqil se
dil ko veeraana sajaaya thhaa badi mushqil se

haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri
banke bigadti kyun hai
haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri
banke bigadti kyun hai
haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri

apni khushiyon ka
ummeedon ka
armaanon ka
maine ek baag lagaayaa thha badi mushqil se
haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri
banke bigadti kyun hai
haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri

bujh gayaa haay
meri duniya mein andhera karke
maine jo deep jayaa thha badi mushqil se
haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri
banke bigadti kyun hai
haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri
banke bigadti kyun hai
haay taqdeer meri
haay taqdeer meri

Atul ji,

Jal Tarang had as many as 6 poets who contributed lyrics for this movie. It had a total of 9 songs, 4 of which were contributed by one poet, Kaif Irfani, and the remaining 5 were written by five different poets. The names are Pt, Sudershan, Mulkhraj Bhakri, Lekhraj Bhakri, Kedar Sharma and Sarshaar Sailaani. (This detail is referred from the Hindi Film Geet Kosh).

The two persons, Mulkhraj Bhakri and Lekhraj Bhakri, sound as if they could be related, possibly brothers, But I have not been able to dig up any more information so far, Interesting side note is that Mulkhraj Bhakri is identified as a successful producer of Punjabi films in 1950s, wiht such hits as Jugni and Do Lachhiaan to his credit,
