Though I subscribe to three newspapers daily, I rarely go through much of their contents and the newspapers finally end up with the “raddiwala” after a few months. But on saturdays I look forward to these newspapers, rather to one column of one newspaper. It is the “Swar panchami” column of Hindi newspaper “Dainik Bhaskar”. In this column, Vividh Bharati radio announcer Yunus Khan discusses a few old songs. And as can be guessed, this topic is right up my alley.
Today, Yunus Khan discussed a few songs where both Rafi and Kishore Kumar have sung together. It turns out that the two of them have sung together in some 59 songs, and 33 of these songs are duets, where only these two voices are present, while ther remaining songs are group songs in the sense that these songs have at least one more voice in them.
The very first time that these two singers came together in a song was in the movie called “Maalkin” (1953).
Here is this very special song which brought the voices of Kishore Kumar and Rafi together for the very first time. This song, Yunus Khan tells us, is picturised on Gope and Yakoob. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and music is composed by Roshan.
