“Aar Paar” (1954) was a milestone in the history of Hindi movies. It was one of the first suspense thrillers in Hindi movies. The music of this movie broke new grounds. The music was a breathtaking combination of Indian and Western influences. The same could be said about the picturisation of the movie and its songs. It is quite obvious that the makers of this movie had drawn inspiration liberally from western movies and from western music.
Here is a song from “Aar Paar” (1954). In this song Guru Dutt, a car driver is singing this song and a few ladies, strangers to him, join and respond to his singing. The credits show this song to be a duet sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt. But I find that different ladies take turns to sing, and I wonder if all of them sing in the voice of Geeta Dutt, because the voices sound different to me. If indeed all these voices are Geeta Dutt’s then one must commend her for changing her voices for different actors. But then several ladies begin to sing simultaneously at one stage. so I suppose one would need a chorus for this situation.
I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us if this song is actually a duet or more voices are involved. And while they are at it, they may as well help identify all these ladies who take turns lip syncing and sometimes shaking a leg or to as well.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar. it is a lovely music where one can hear the exotic sound of hawaaiian guitar as well as more native sounds of dholak and tabla.

Atul ji,
This song indeed has another voice. The version of this song released on records is sung by Rafi Saab and Geeta ji. However, the on screen version also has the voice of Suman Kalyanpur. The second antaraa starting with ‘muhabbat kya hai suno ji ham se’, and fourth antaraa starting with ‘mohabbat se qul jahaan khafa hai’ is in her voice.
The chorus is composed voices of Geeta ji and Suman ji.
No luck on identifying the ladies, and the one gentleman in waiting, although they look familiar from scenes in some other movies. The first lady who starts the song is with Guru Dutt – my guess is that she is Maya Bannerjee, but I am not very sure.
