Ae dil meri wafaa mein koi asar nahin hai

“Anokha Pyaar” (1948) was an Ambika Films Company production. It was directed by M I Dharmsen. The movie had Kesari, Dilip Kumar, Nargis, Nalini Jaywant, Mukri, Ved, Uma Dutt, Habib, Sheikh, Sankatha Prasad etc in it.

I have discussed three songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie. This song is an all female duet in the sense that it is sung by two female singers and the song is picturised on two actresses. The two actresses are not really singing this song together rather they are doing it at thei own separate places. But even then, this song is technically a duet.

This song is sung by Lata (for Nalini Jaiwant) and Meena Kapoor(for Nargis). Our Inhouse expert Mr Arunkumar Deshmuksh informs us that when the song was to be recorded for the record company, Meena Kapoor could not sing because she was very ill and in her place, Ira Nagrath’s voice was utilised in the record version of the song.

There are audios of this song which claim to be the audio version but they are in fact movie soundtrack version. Now I have got hold of the actual record version where the singer other than Lata has a voice different from that of Meena Kapoor. So this voice in the audio version is Ira Nagrath’s voice.

Ira Nagrath was a playback singer in 1940s and she married music director Roshan. I was keen to look for a song sung by her ever since I became awre that she was a playback singer in her early days. And luckily I became aware of this song while I was looking for some other details about some other artist.

Shams Azimabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anil Biswas.

So here is this song,in both video and audio version. Video version is sung by Lata and Meena Kapoor, whereas audio version has Lata and Ira Nagrath.

Song-Ae dil meri wafaa mein koi asar nahin hai (Anokha Pyaar) (1948) Singers-Lata, Meena Kapoor/ Ira Nagrath, Lyrics-Shams Azimabadi, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

ae dil meri wafaa mein koi asar nahin hai
main mar rahi hoon jin par unko khabar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein
mere hi dil mein rah kar mujh par nazar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein koi asar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein

dil leke ab kahaan hai
dil ke churaane waale
dil leke ab kahaan hai
dil ke churaane waale
aankhon se door kyun hai
dil mein samaane waale
aankhon se door kyun hai
dil mein samaane waale
koi unhen bataaye mujhko khabar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein koi asar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein

uthate hain dil se sholey
aankhon mein hai andheraa
main ho gayi kisi ki
koi huaa na meraa
koi huaa na meraa
koi huaa na meraa
jo aag idhar lagi hai
wo aag udhar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein koi asar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein

ab yaad mein kisi ki
mar mar ke jee rahi hoon
aansoo jo aa rahe hain
aankhon mein pi rahi hoon
ab yaad mein kisi ki
mar mar ke jee rahi hoon
hoti hai peed dil mein
aur aankh tar rahi hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein koi asar nahin hai
ae dil meri wafaa mein

Atul ji,
In the early years of cinema,Records of the film songs were made separately,as there was the limitation of singing to fit into 78 or 45 rpm.
That is why, many songs have different singers in films and on the records, for various reason.
Anil Bishwas used the voice of Meena Kapoor in this film, but at the time of recording the songs for record purpose,Meena Kapoor was very ill.
Hence this song was recorded in the voices of Lata and Ira Nagrath. In the film clip above, the voice is that of Lata and Meena Kapoor only.Only in the audio,it is Lata and Ira.
Similarly, the famous song of this movie,” Yaad rakhana chaand taaron” was sung by Lata and Meena Kapoor in the film, but on the record,it is sung by only Lata as a solo and it became an all time hit.

Yes, indeed the voice sounds so much like Meena Kapoor’s even in the audio. I wonder if the audio is actually the records version or it is audio of the movie version. If it is the movie version then my search for actual voice of Ira Nagtrath still continues.
PS-Now I have located the real audio version too and given the audio link where it is really Ira Nagrath singing alongwith Lata.
