Greetings to all, on the occasion of Durga Ashtami festival today, as well as he continuing celebrations of Navratris. Jai Mata Di.
‘Navratri’ means ‘nine nights’, a celebration to honor the Mother Goddess, that lasts for 9 days. There are many legends attached to the festival of Navratri, all of them related to Goddess Shakti (Hindu Mother Goddess) and her various forms.
It is one of the most celebrated festivals of Hindu calendar. It holds special significance for people in all parts of the country, and is celebrated with a lot of zeal and fervor. Navratri is associated with the fertility of Mother Earth who feed us as her children. It is the time of sowing season for most major crops and the farmers sow their crops and thank the Goddess for her blessings and pray for better yield. The Mother Goddess is worshipped in her various forms as Goddess Durga (Warrior Goddess) dressed in red and mounted on a lion; Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity), dressed in red and gold; and Goddess Saraswati (Goddess Of Knowledge), dressed in milky white and mounted on a pure white swan.
In some communities, people undergo rigorous fasts during this season that lasts for the nine days of Navratri. The festival culminates on Mahanavami. On this day, Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped. Their feet are washed as a mark of respect for the Goddess and then they are offered new clothes as gifts by the worshiper. This celebration is performed in most parts of the country.
In this post, I present the iconic Aarti from the 1955 film Navratri. This is one of the most popular aartis in the honor of Mother Goddess.
For a long time, I was under the impression that this was a non-film creation. But when I tried to search for more information, I find it to be from a film. The verses are written by Bharat Vyas, and the music is composed by Chitragupt. The singing voices are of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle.
Wishing all a wonderful and happy festival season ahead, and also wishing for a blessed and fulfilling next year.

vipdaa mitaane waali
satiyon ke sat ko sanwaarti
