Ye samaa ham tum jawaan

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Film MAASHUKAA(1953) had 9 songs, 8 of which were sung by Mukesh and Suraiyya and the remaining song “ye sama hum tum jawaan” by Kishore Kumar and Meena Kapoor. The song was written by Shailendra and composed by Roshan. I had heard this song on Radio FM Gold about 3 years back but located the audio clip of this song on YT few months back. The film was produced by Mukesh with himself and Suraiyya as the lead pair. Other cast included Agha, Kuldup Kaur, Durga Khote and Amirbai Karnataki. Four songs from this film have already been discussed in this blog.
Going by the cast of the film, I guess that this song may have been picturised on Agha and Kuldip Kaur. Probably this was the first song in which Kishore Kumar used yodelling which became his trade mark in some of his subsequent songs. I will not be surprised if yodeling and words‘chiki bam chiki bam’ were suggested by Kishore Kumar to be incorporated in the song. Meena Kapoor’s singing in this song stands out as different from her other songs. Her voice is mesmerising, particularly the lines ‘pyaar ki teri galli ab chhodi na jaaye haaye re haaye’. The finale of the song with both singers singing on different pitches is superb.
With a good melody and orchestration, honey filled voice of Meena Kapoor and yodeling by Kishore Kumar, this romantic ‘feel good’ song should have become the rage especially amongst the younger lots of that time. But the film flopped and as it often happened those days, even melodious songs of flopped films were soon forgotten.

Lyrics
adi odley ae oyee
ki yodley ae oyee
ye sama hum tum jawaan
pehloo se dil sarak jaaye
ye pyaar ki teri galli
ab chhodi na jaaye
haaye re haaye
la la la laa laa
la la la laa laa
mil jaaye agar tujh se nazar
nanha sa dil dhadak jaaye
ye pyaar ki teri galli
ab chhodi na jaaye
haaye re haaye
la la la laa laa
la la la laa laa
adi odley ae oyee
ki yodeli ae oyee
bheegi bheegi ye chaandni raat
aankhon hi aankhon mein jaaye re
main kuchh kahoon
dil kuchh kaye
yaad bairi balam ki sataaye re
bin tere
mujhko gham gere
rahe mera dil udaas hardum
chiki bam chiki bam
chiki bam chiki bam
chiki chiki chiki
ati ati ati ati bam
ati ati
ye to chori chori milne kaa mausam
ye sama hum tum jawaan
pehloo se dil sarak jaaye
ye pyaar ki teri galli
ab chhodi na jaaye
haaye re haaye
la la la laa laa
la la la laa laa
adi odley ae oyee
ki yodley ae oyee
meri meri nazron ke bheje huye
taar ka to jawaab do
meri meri
thhi kyaa khabar
tum bhi neeyat ke itne kharaab ho
teri baanki nazar ki jhaanki
ladkhadati hai mere kadam
chiki bam chiki bam
chiki bam chiki bam
chiki chiki chiki chiki
chiki chiki chiki bam
ati ati bam
milne ka mausam
ye sama hum tum jawaan
pehloo se dil sarak jaaye
ye pyaar ki teri galli
ab chhodi na jaaye
haaye re haaye
la la la laa laa
la la la laa laa

Great duet!!!!! Kishore’s first yodelling was “ek do teen chaar” (duet) from the movie Muqqadar, to my knowledge…..

It is really unfortunate that kishore kumarji was not used frequently by other music directors except the maestro sachin Dev Burman saab in the 50s and 60sand kishore ji for some reason confined only to singing for Dev saab.Just imagine how many more melodious songs like Tandi hawa ye chand ni kahani and how many soulful songs such as Dukhiman mere suno mere khena would have cascaded from his nectar filled voice. But thanks to almighty he gave us Kishoreji and Rafi saab both for Indian film industry.
