SHAGOOFA (1953) was the first film produced under the banner of P N Films – a production company of Premnath and Bina Rai who were also in the lead roles in this film. The other cast included Purnima, Bipin Gupta,Sundar, Yashodara Katju and Rajendranath. The film was directed by H S Rawail.
I came to know of this this film only in early 70s that too because of one of its songs ‘apna pataa bataa de’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. It was only about 2 years back that I could access the details of this film as well as 3 more melodious songs rendered by Lata Mangeshkar thanks to YT.
Since none of the songs from this film has been discussed in this blog, I intend to discuss some of the songs of the film one by one in the coming days starting with the song ‘apna pataa bataa de ya mere pass aa jaa’. The song is written by Rajendra Krishna and set to tune by C Ramchandra. In a way, this is one of those songs of the troika who have given us many memorable songs. .This song has both sad and happy versions. Only the audio clip is available of the song but one can guess that the song has been picturised on Bina Rai. The height of the sadness can be judged by one of the two couplets that precedes the sad version of the song:
Kasam teri tere gham mein, ye haalat ho gayi meri
Ke soorat maut se bhi ab to pahchaani nahi jaati
I also liked the way the mukhda isworded. In the midst of sadness. She gives her beloved the two options – “yougive your address or come to me”.
The song is sad but one gets contented listening to such compositions.
The happy version of the song hasdifferent lyrics with a fast rendition and orchestration. The tune has been slightly changed in the third stanza.
