Today (14th february) is Valentine’s day and regulars may have wondered why we in ths blog did not discuss any songs on this occasion. Well, I thought that most songs in Hindi movies are in any case “expression of love” songs, so we in this blog in any case discuss such songs everyday. So for this blog everyday is Valentine’s day.
Moreover, we in India have one full season devoted to love, namely “saawan” season, instead of devoting just one day in the year. 🙂
But I agree that west has yet to catch us with Indians, and those who live in the west only have to manage with just this one day in the year. 🙂 Valentine’s day is getting over in India, but it is still early in the morning in the Western nations, so why deny them the pleasures of celebrating Valentine’s day with a song tailormade for the occasion.
Here is a song tailormade for the occasion. In fact, this song also fits the bill as a song belonging to the popular category , viz “how come this song was not discussed earlier” category of songs. 🙂
This song is the iconic title song of “Mere Mehboob” (1963). This song has two versions. Rafi version, which is over 8 minutes long is picturised as a stage song on Rajendra Kumar.
Lata version, which is only half the lenght is picturised on Sadhana on a less public setting, viz among an all female audience in her house.
It is the lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni that have made contributed the most in making this song an immortal song. The rest is done by the music of Naushad and the inspired singing by Rafi and Lata.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Mere mehboob tujhe meri muhabbat ki qasam (Mere Mehboob)(1963) Singer-Rafi/Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad
Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
mere mehboob tujhe
meri muhabbat ki kasam
mere mehboob tujhe
meri muhabbat ki kasam
phir mujhe nargisee
aankhon ka sahaara de de
mera khoya huya
rangeen nazara de de
mere mehboob tujhe
meri mohabbat ki kasam
aye mere khwaab ki taabeer
meri jaan e ghazal
zindagi meri tujhe
yaad kiye jaati hai
raat din mujhko
sataata hai tassawwur tera
dil ki dhadkan tujhe
awaaz diye jaati hai
aa mujhe apni sadaaon ka
sahaara de de
mera khoya huaa
rangeen nazara de de
mere mehboob tujhe
meri muhabbat ki kasam
bhool sakti nahin aankhen
woh suhaana manzar
jab tera husn
mere ishq se takraaya thha
aur phir raah mein
bikhre thhey hazaaron naghme
main woh naghme
teri aawaaz ko de aaya thha
saaz e dil ko
unhee geeton ka
sahaara de de
mera khoya huya
rangeen nazaara de de
mere mehboob tujhe
meri muhabbat ki kasam
yaad hai mujh ko meri
umr ki pehli woh ghadi
teri aankhon se koi
jaam piya thha maine
meri rag rag mein koi
barq si lehraayee thhi
jab tere marmari haathon ko
chhuaa thha maine
aa mujhe phir
unhi haathon a sahaara de de
mera khoya huaa
rangeen nazaara de de
mere mehboob tujhe
meri mohabbat ki kasam
maine ek baar teri
ek jhalak dekhi hai
meri hasrat hai ke main
phir tera deedaar karoon
tere saaye ko samajhkar
main haseen taj mahal
chaandni raat mein
nazron se tujhe pyaar karoon
apni mehki huyi
zulphon ka sahaara de de
mera khoya huya
rangeen nazaara de de
mere mehboob tujhe
meri mohabbat ki kasam
dhoondhta hoon tujhe
har raah mein har mehfil mein
thhak gaye hain
meri majboor tamanna ke kadam
aaj ka din meri
umeed ka hai aakhri din
kal na jaane main kahaan
aur kahaan tu ho sanam
do ghadi apni nigaahon
ka sahaara de de
mera khoya huaa
rangeen nazaara de de
mere mehboob tujhe
meri mohabbat ki kasam
saamne aake zara
parda uthha de rukh se
ek yahi mera
ilaaj e gham e tanhaayee hai
teri furkat ne
pareshaan kiya hai mujh ko
ab to mil ja ke meri
jaan pe ban aayee hai
dil ko bhooli hui
yaadon ka sahaara de de
mera khoya huaa
rangeen nazaara de de
mere mehboob tujhe
meri muhabbat ki kasam
mere mehboob tujhe

Yes Atulji, you said it right. Indians in the west part of the globe has to learn a lot. But here also we celebrate Valentine’s Day in the temple doing some rituals, pooja, & prayer with families to be thankful to Lord for all the LOVE he has showered on all living creatures. My son goes to our Chinmaya Mission and our Swamiji explains the same “Love to all living creatures and respect to all non living things” on every day. According to my opinion, most Indians do believe in this philosophy. The Westerners have their limitation in understanding the depth about this celebratin, but I have faith that time will come and they will broaden their thoughts also.

Khyati ji,
Thanks a lot for this song. I thought that this song is posted. Another title song from this film is “mere mehboob mein kya nahin” is posted, i had looked it up. somehow i overlooked this particular song. Aesthetically, this has to be the perfect romantic song. I know a lot has been written about this song, but seeing it again today has re-inforced my view that this situation, sequence and song , cannot be bettered or even equalled,
Simply beautiful lyrics, with the right amount of emotion, enhanced by a compostion which is again very simple, and unparelled singing by Rafi in the longer version and Lata version is making Sadhana look so convincing. All said and done it is a masterpiece by the masters.

Yes, u said it right. Agar ye gana Sahir ya Majrooh saab ne likha hota to Sudhirji ka kaam badh jata. I don’t like to give him hard time, but if I don’t understand few words (naturally, urdu) in a song, to jaise bechainee si hoti hai. Feels like salt/spices are missing from a delicious recipe 🙂 . And Sudhirji translates it in such a simple language that koi bachha bhi samaj sakta hai.
