Bhool jaa ae dil

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.
I find that there are 18 songs listed under ‘Song excluded from movie’ category in this blog. Although the sample is not representative one to come to a definite conclusion, it is interesting to note that O P Nayyar leads in this category with 5 songs followed by Madan Mohan(4 songs), S D Burman (3 songs) and Naushad(2 songs). Sajjad Hussain, Husnalal Bhagatram, Bulo C Rani and Roshan have one song each in this category.
As I understand, there are many reasons for excluding songs from the films after they have been recorded. Some of the reasons could be that(1) after recording of the song, the director of the film had second thought about fitting the song in a given situation; (2) after the completion of the film and at the editing table, director/editor felt that the song slowed down the tempo of the film; (3) if the length of the film was an issue, excluding asong from the film was the most convenient way especially if the song was not hampering the continuity in the screen play.
Some of the songs excluded from the films are so melodious that I feel like comparing the persons responsible for excluding such songs from the films, with a butcher. But as discussed earlier, like butchers, the producer/directors may have certain professional compulsions. Anyway, thanks to websites, we are lucky that at least we get to listen to some of suchsongs.
Here is a beautiful song ‘bhool jaa ae dil’ from film HAM SAB CHOR HAIN (1956) which was excluded from the film. The song written by Majrooh Sultanpuri is sung by Asha Bhosle under the music direction of O P Nayyar. Normally, O P Nayyar has been known to prominently use a combination of sarangis and violins for orchestration during the interlude of sad songs. But in this song, he has used a mix of guitars and violins for orchestration giving a feel of a symphony song.
It is not known as to why this song was excluded. My guess is that the film’s director I S Johar may have later felt that this song was an antithesis in a comedy film.
Five songs have already been discussed in this blog which had the typical O P Nayyar stamp on them. This song has a somewhat different styles of melody and composition.I regard this song as the best among the other songs from this film.
Song-Bhool jaa ae dil (Ham Sab Chor Hain)(1956) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
bhool jaa ae dil
pyaar ke wo din
tujhse kisi ko pyaar thha
yaad naa kar wo din
bhool jaa ae dil
bhool jaa ae dil
gaye din khushi se
padaa gham se paala
yehi sham-e-gham hai
to kaisa ujaalaa
bhujaa de nigaaon ke
deepak bhujaa de
yahaan aaj koi
nahin aanewala
bhool jaa ae dil
bhool jaa ae dil
koi bewafaa chain se so raha hai
tu kyun humse ashkhon se muhn do raha hai
dhuli chandni chhaa rahi hai udaasi
tera kaaun hai
tu kise ro raha hai
bhool jaa ae dil
bhool jaa ae dil
mohabbat ko apne haathon kuchal de
jo dil mein khilin thhi
wo kaliyaan masal de
badi bewafaa hain yahaan ki bahaaren
deewaane yahaan se kahin door chal de
bhool jaa ae dil
bhool jaa ae dil

Kamath ji,
I do not know on what grounds,it was felt that this song was deleted from the film.Perhaps,You tube may have mentioned so.
However let me tell you that the case is exactly opposite.originally, there were only 8 songs in the film but this song “Bhool ja aye dil…” was later added to the film and it was and is very much a part of the film.
This fact is also confirmed by Hindi film geet kosh-vol III pp298.
It is difficult to believe these sites sometimes.
For your info, this song is sung by Nalini Jaywant in the film.

Oh…. my mistake of not cross checking. Unfortunately, I don’t have GK with me to refer to such doubtful cases.
Apart from YT, what made me to think that this may be a deleted song wasf the fact that while all other songsof this film had video clip, this one did not.
Thanks for pointing out.
