Jaan sakey to jaan
Posted on: March 5, 2012
During 1950s and 1960s, there used to be quite a few movies with the word “ustaad” in them. This blog have had songs from movies viz “Do Ustaad” (1959), “Ustaadon Ke Ustaad” (1963), “Ustaad 420” (1963), “Ham Sab Ustaad Hain” (1965),”Sab Ka Ustaad” (1967) etc but the movie with the defining word in them, viz “Ustaad” was not among them.
Yes, there indeed is one movie called “Ustaad” (1957). This movie had Ashok Kumar, Anita Guha, Anjali Devi, K N Singh, Rehman etc in it.
Here is a philosophical song from this movie. It is sung by Rafi. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar, though the music does not sound O P Nayyarish.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah, and a few hours later Khyati Bhatt also sent the lyrics of the same song, and this was enough of a hint to me to quickly discuss this song. 😉
It is a nice song, which I heard for the first time just now.
Song-Jaan sakey to jaan (Ustaad)(1957) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)
aaaa aaa aaaa aaaaaa
aaa aaa aaa aaaa
aaa aaa aaaa
jaan sakey to jaan
tere man mein chhupkar baithe
dekh tere bhagwaan
jaan sakey to jaan
sadiyaan beetin lekin tera
deep na bujhne paaya
teri poonji man ki daulat
sab se oonchi maaya
Sita jaisi shakti tujh mein
Sita jaisi shakti tujh mein
Parvati ki shaan
jaan sakey to jaan
tere man mein chhupkar baithe
dekh tere bhagwaan
jaan sakye to jaan
koi na tera
koi na mera
saare naate jhoothe
toote jag ki aas to kya gham
aas na uski tootey
woh hi tera sachha swami
maan arey insaan
jaan sakey to jaan
ghar bhi chhoota dar bhi chhoota
dhoondhe rain basera
gham ke gehre baadal chhaaye
chaaron ore andhera
nirdhan ke dukh dard ko kyun kar
jaan sakey dhanawan
jaan sake to jaan
paap ki apne dekho moorakh
aap sazaa hai paata
jo bhi seedhi raah se bhatke
jod na usse naata
jaisi karni waisi bharni
jaisi karni waisi bharni
bhool na ja naadaan
jaan sake to jaan
tere man mein chhupkar baithe
dekh tere bhagwaan
jaan sakey to jaan
rain andheri rasta soona
bhatke jaa dukhiyaari
tere dil ki raakh me jalti
aaj bhi ik chingaari
haar na himmat
kabhi to hogi
haar na himmat
kabhi to hogi
raah teri aasaan
jaan sakey to jaan
dil mein laakhon toofaan jaage
aankh na lekin roye
dharm ka paalan karne waali
aan na apni khoye
dekho dekho mamta apne
dekho dekho mamta apne
pyaar ka de balidaan
pyaar ka de balidaan
pyaar ka de balidaan

Very interesting fact Arunji. Just want to share a funny fact. Here, people instead of Uday (male name for an Indian), they pronounce it as a U Day (Ilike “you day”- 8th day of a week) 😆 . So, that way, I can only imagine them pronouncing Ustad as “you stad”.

Thanks Atul. On hearing it again it reminds me of Nayaa Daur Mandir song picturised on Dilip, Ajit etc.. Aana hai to aa raah me kuch der nahin hain. No wonder the music of both the films is from mastero O P Nayyar(who claims like Suraiya to have no grooming in classical or any form of music..truly God’s gift).
