“My Friend” (1974) was produced by Punamchand Shah and N Patel. This movie was directed by M Rehman, who was a son of Naushad. Naushad was the music director of this movie.
The movie had Rajeev, Prem Narayan, Utpal Dutt, Jagdeep, Asit Sen, Tuntun etc in it.
Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised as a boat song on Rajeev and Prema Narayan. Prem a Narayan playing the lead role and an unheard of actor as the hero meant that attracting movie goers was going to be an uphill task for the movie. No wonder the movie failed at the box office.
Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist of this song.

One of the forgotten songs of Rafi. I remember it was a very famous song, when we have handful of Rafi songs in that era.

Agree with Armanji. Song was indeed famous (I would not say a hit), but I was not aware of the movie or MD or cast at that age. Interesting to find that Naushad was MD and his son was the director. Arunji, did he act as Master Rajeev before he came as a hero? “Internet Uwaach” 🙂 . I would like to mention one fact here is that he has acted in few Gujarati movies also. (Hope this point won’t start a big discussion like Vijay Dutt being Gujarati or not).

yes to your both questions.
He started his career as Master Rajeev.
Rajeev was the son of the producer Poonamchand Shah and therefore in all likelyhood he is the one who must have acted in Guj films also.

This movie also reminds me another movie Sunhera Sansar, music by Naushad, I have vague memories of one song which was something like that Babul ke ghar ke baad pee ki gali aati hai by Rafi, it has kishore kumar song too who sang perhaps first time for naushad.

‘My Friend’ was a resounding flop! Poor Prema Narayan was the best thing in the movie. Even Naushad’s music was very pedestrian. He seemed to have scratched the bottom of the barrel and come up with pathetic tunes! As for the hero, he was miserable!

The song was very much in my memories but I had not listened it often and even didn’t know its film. Recently I listened this song on FM and this song has not left me since then. Simple tune of those days has so much impact that you feel fascinated. Though not hit song of Rafi Saab, but he was so blessed that even normal song became special in his divine voice.

MY FRIEND-1974 was not the first film of Rajeev as a Hero.Earlier,in 1965 also he had failed miserably as a Hero in “Nai Umar ki Nayi Fasal” and that too with Taunja,as his Heroine.He again tried his luck in “Bahu ho to aisi ho”-1982,with again Tanuja as his Heroine.As a last resort,he became Hero with Abhilasha-a new comer,in Lady Killer-95,with the same assured result !
Meanwhile,he kept on doing minor roles in Kishti,Nasoor,Kabza,Tejaa etc.
This was the FIRST and the Last directorial venture for M.Rehman-son of Naushad.
Naushad’s two other sons,Maqbool and Sami-ur-Rehman assisted Naushad in the music Direction,but I am sure Naushad must have depended more on the 3rd assistant he had in this film-Uttam Singh.
The story was hopeless.The son loves a girl.Son is modern,but his father(Utpal dutt) is Ultra Modern.Later,the son realises that his father is very conservative and that he pretended to be ultramodern,only to hide his extra-marital affair with a woman(Purnima).
Overall,it was a disappointing venture on all fronts.
