“Howrah Bridge” (1958) was a suspense movie which was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta under his banner of Shri Shakti Films Production. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Madhubala, K N Singh, Kammo, Sunder, Salien Bose, Krishnakant, Helen, Dhumal, Madan Puri, Bhagwan Sinha, Kundan, Om Prakash etc in it.
The movie had some nice songs in it. I have discussed four songs from this movie in the past including the iconic songs viz Mera naam Chin Chin Choo sung by Geeta Dutt and Aayiye meharbaan sung by Asha Bhonsle.
Normally O P Nayyar was known to use only one female singer for all the songs needing playback for female actors, so it was quite unusual for O P Nayyar to use two female voices for two different acrors in a movie (Helen and Madhubala respectively in this case). Even more curiously. O P Nayyar used yet another female voice in this movie, namely the voice of Shamshad Begam.
Here is a duet song from this movie which is sung by Shamshad Begam and Rafi. The song is picturised on Kammo and Sundar. It is nice to see bit actors in a Hindi movie too getting the chance to sing romantic songs in Hindi movies.
There were eight songs in this movie and Qamar Jalalabadi had penned seven of them. This song was the sole exception as it was penned by Hasrat Jaipuri.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Main jaan gayee tujhe sainyaa,
hatt chhod de mori bainyaa
matlab ke yaar diya mujhko maar
abb kaahe padat mori painyyaa
main jaan gayee tujhe saiyaa,
hatt chhod de mori bainyyaa
matlab ke yaar diya mujhko maar
abb kaahe padat mori panyiyaa
main jaan gayee tujhe sainyaa aa aa
tu mast ghata main baadal
tu aankh hai main hoon kaajal
meri saans mein teri khushboo
tere pyaar ne kar diya paagal
tu mast ghata main baadal
tu aankh hai main hoon kaajal
meri saans main teri khushboo
tere pyaar ne kar diya paagal
main jaan gayee tujhe sainyaa,
hatt chhod de mori bainyyaa
matlab ke yaar diya mujhko maar
abb kaahe padat mori paiyaa
main jaan gayee tujhe saiyaa aa aa
tu chaand kahe to laa doon
taaron se maang saja doon
hai pyaar mujhe bhi kitna
main cheer ke dil dikhla doon
tu chaand kahe to laa doon
taaron se maang saja doon
hai pyaar mujhe bhi kitna
main cheer ke dil dikhala doon
main jaan gayee tujhe sainyaa,
hatt chhod de mori bainyyaa
matlab ke yaar diya mujhko maar
abb kaahe padat mori painyyaa
main jaan gayee tujhe sainyaa aa aa
oh tere gaal pe jo bhi til hai
mera pyaar bhara woh dil hai
main raahi hoon matwaala
tu pyaar bhari manzil hai
tere gaal pe jo bhi til hai
mera pyaar bhara woh dil hai
main raahi hoon matwaala
tu pyar bhari manzil hai
ho main jaan gayee tujhe saiyaa,
hatt chhod de mori bainyaa
matlab ke yaar diya mujhko maar
abb kaahe padat mori paiyaa
main jaan gayee tujhe saiyaa aa aa
hatt chhod de mori baiyaa
matlab ke yaar diya mujhko maar
abb kaahe padat mori paiyaa
main jaan gayee tujhe sainyaaa aa aa

Wow Prakash ji! Bahut bahut shukriya for the additional info. I think the list may be as long as the proverbial ‘Hanuman ki doom’! 😉 Once again, thanks a lot!

This was a common song situation in our films those days. A ‘simple’ person / persons singing a song in the presence of the lead pair. “Kabhi aar kabbhi paar laaga teere sanam…” by Kumkum in ‘Aar Paar’ watched by Guru Dutt and Shyama; the CID song “Booj mera kya naam re…” by Minoo Mumtaz for the benefit of Dev Anand and Shakila and again in CID, “O leke pehla pehla pyaar…” I don’t remember the singers in the movie.
