“Taxi Driver” (1954) was one of the earliest production of Navketan. This slickly produced movie was directed by Chetan Anand. The movie had Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartik, Sheila Ramani, Johnny Walker, Parveen Kaul, Hamid, Rashid Khan, Vernon Corke, Ratan Gaurang etc in it.
Music played an important role in the success of the movie. The movie had seven sons in it. As many as six songs from this movie have already been discussed in the blog.
Here is the one song missing from the blog. This song is a club song. It is sung by Lata and it is lip synced by Sheila Ramani. The picturisation also shows Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartik , with many baddies swarming about the place. According to Hindi movie song protocal, any fight etc can only commence after the song ends, but here one finds Dev Anand up against a vegetable knife wielding baddie before the end of the song. Fortunately, this backroom action takes place during the last interlude of the song with music playing and not when the vocal is being sung.
Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and music is composed by S D Burman. Yes, those were the days when Sahir Ludhianvi and S D Burman were still working together and creating gems together.
