Tum na aaye sanam shamma jalti rahi

“Tum na aaye sanam shamma jalti rahi” is one of those rare gems which involves all B-grade names apart from the peerless Lata Mangeshkar herself.
It is her sublime rendering of this number on a lesser light of that period, namely, Vijaya Chowdhary, with B-grade Bollywood hero Ranjan sometimes in the frame.
Not many would have heard the name of Vedpal Verma, the composer nor of the lyricist Yusuf. But Lataji’s unmatched vocals on its moving lyrics and its haunting tune literally wrap around the listener!
It is from not-too-well-known a movie Bhootnath (1963). One of its foot-tapping numbers “Dil Ka Qaraar Le Gayaa” by Suman Kalyanpur with more write up on the movie and the aforesaid number is already on this blog.
It is interesting to note that Vedpal Verma later used a shorter version of “Tum na aaye sanam shamma jalti rahi” from Bhoonath (1963) in background on a newly-wed Yogita Bali waiting in vain for her beau Anil Dhawan, an air-force officer, in the Sawan Kumar directed Oh Bewafa (1980). This later number is also on YouTube here.

Song-Tum na aaye sanam shama jalti rahi (Bhootnath)(1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Yusuf, MD-Vedpal Verma
Lyrics
tum na aaye sanam
shamma jalti rahi
raat dhalti rahi,
dil tadapta raha
aa aa aa
tum na aaye sanam
shamma jalti rahi
so gayi raat
daaman mein taare liye
chhod kar gham ke aansoo
hamaare liye
so gayi raat
daaman mein taare liye
chhod kar gham ke aansoo
hamaare liye
ae ae
tumse milne ki hasrat
machalti rahi
dil tadapta raha
aa aa
tum na aaye sanam
shamma jalti rahi
kho gaye sapne baaki
mere pyaar ke
kho gaye sapne baaki
mere pyar ke
raat bhar phool mehke
mere haar ke
raat bhar phool mehke
mere haar ke
ae ae
main khayaalon ke aangan mein
chalti rahi
dil tadapta raha
aa aa
tum na aaye sanam
shamma jalti rahi
meri aawaaz ko
jaane kya ho gaya
aa aa
meri aawaaz ko
jaane kya ho gaya
main bahaaron mein
gaati rahi jogiya
aa aa
saaz bajte rahe
dhun badalti rahi
dil tadapta raha
aa aa
tum na aaye sanam
shamma jalti rahi

Ranjan was a great swashbuckling hero of his time! Though he played the villain in ‘Chandralekha’, not many remember the hero! They remember Ranjan, the cold hearted villain in the movie!

BHOOTNATH-1963 was a typical stunt film which has its own audience in every town.Ranjan(originally Ramnarayan Venkatram Sarma,1918 to 1983,from Madras) was a darling of those people who loved to see sword fights.Ranjan,in real life also, was an excellent sword fighter. His films were always stunt or fantasy costume dramas.
I always used to see all his films for his skill in sword fighting.
As far as Vedpal, the MD of this film is concerned, please his information in this blog on 9-2-2012,as comments on the song of Bhootnath.
Yusuf, the Lyricist was an assistant cinematographer in this film and his songs were used in this film.this was his only film as a lyricist.
Maharaja of Preetnagar had a lovely daughter Rajkumari(Vijaya Chaudhari). His Dewan was a loyal person but Dewan’s son Gulshan Rai(Rajan Haksar),the Army chief was wicked.
There was a masked man operating in the kingdom. He was enemy to the wicked but a friend to the needy. He was called Bhootnath, because of his Mask and black clothes.Rajkumari was in love with him without seeing Bhootnath(Ranjan). She was engaged to the insane prince,Vijay,of the neighbouring kingdom Chadangarh. To avoid this marriage,She escapes from her palace and falls in the hands of Bhootnath, who keeps her in safe custody.
Gulshan kills his father as also the Maharaja and becomes the King.To teach him a lesson,Bhootnath sends Rajkumari and others as Gypsy dancers, but they are recognised and caught. Now Gulshan wants to marry Rajkumari.Bhootnath attacks him, there is a terrific sword fight and Bhootnath kills Gulshan. In this melee,it is also revealed that he is prince Vijay, the so called insane fiance of Rajkumari.
the maharaja is rescued and all is well in the end.
