Dekh aasmaan mein chaand muskuraaye

Posted on: August 1, 2012

Today (1 august) is the birth anniversary of Meena Kumari ( 1 august 1932- 31 march 1972). It is unimaginable to realise that she did not even reach the age of 40 ! She achieved so much in her brief stay in this world and she went on to become a legend.

Most people today remember her as a tragedy queen par excellence. But that is not how she had started her career. Her career can broadly be divided into two parts. First part (in 1950s) was when she played happy bubbly characters. It was later (late 1950s onwards) that she began to play tragic characters. Then difference between her reel life and real life blurred and her life ended tragically like many of her tragedy movies. How I wish now that she should have stayed on with happy movies and not allowed her to be hijacked by all those tragedy movies of 1960s.

In her happy movies, she was mainly paired with Kishore Kumar and they made a lovely screen couple, full of fu and joie de vivre.

On the occasion of Meena Kumari’s birth anniversary, here is a nice duet from “Sharaarat” (1959), which was a light hearted comedy movie featuring Kishore Kumar, Meena Kumari, Kumkum etc.

This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Geeta Dutt and it is picturised on Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

This movie is the only occasion when Shankar Jaikishan made use of Geeta Dutt’s voice. Moreover Kishore Kumar- Geeeta Dutt duets are also not all that common. That way this song must be regarded as a special song in more than one count.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Dekh aasmaan mein chaand muskuraaye (Sharaarat)(1959) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Kishore Kumar + Geeta Dutt

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

dekh aasmaan mein chaand muskuraaye
dekh woh sitaare gagan mein jhilmilaaye
woh keh rahe hain pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo
woh keh rahe hai pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo
dekh aasmaan mein chaand muskuraye
dekh woh sitaare gagan mein jhilmilaaye
woh keh rahe hain pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo
woh keh rahe hain pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo

baar baar marke hamein yoon nahin daraao
baar baar marke hamein yoon nahi daraao
marna jo toh ek baar marke hi dikhaao
jaao hamne aise jhoothe meet kayi dekhe hain
ke dil mein kuchh jabaan pe kuchh
yeh ishqwale dekhe hain
o o o o
o jaao zaalim hamein na yuun sataao
pyaar ki yeh baatein hamein nahi sikhaao
kisi pe aitbaar kar lo
haan kar lo
kisi pe aitbaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo

dekh aasmaan mein chaand muskuraaye
dekh woh sitaare gagan mein jhilmilaaye
woh keh rahe hain pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo
woh keh rahe hain pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo

tum bahaar banke meri aarzu pe chhaa gaye
tum bahaar banke meri aarzu pe chhaa gaye
jab khayaal kar liya
toh saamne tum aa gaye
maano ya na maano meri zindagi ke humsafar
ke dil mein tum nazar mein tum
chhupe ho phir bhi bekhabar
ho o o o
ja ja zaalim hamein na yuun sataao
pyaar ki yeh baatein hamein nahi sikhaao
kisi pe aitbaar kar lo
haan kar lo
kisi pe aitbaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo

dekh aasmaan mein chand muskuraye
dekh woh sitaare gagan mein jhilmilaaye
woh keh rahe hain pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo
woh keh rahe hain pyaar kar lo
pyaar kar lo

One of my top favorite duet.
Kamal Amrohi was a Syed + 15 years senior to her + 2x married with children + great egoistic man.
+ Meena Kumari won filmfare award in 1952 + married to Kamal + she had great ego.+She wanted to have children of her own but Kamal didn’t want to have a child with Meena because she wasn’t Syed.
The result = separation in 1960, divorced in 1964.
When she was alone most of the time after her divorce with Kamal, she made poetry for relax. She recorded some of her own poetry in her own voice “I write I recite” Music by Khayyam.
After her death, most of her poetry was pass on to Gulzar. Some of Gulzar poetry are very similar to poem by Meena Kumari.
She send a message to Kamal after the divorce: Talaaq To de rahe ho, nazar-e-quehar ke saath, Jawani bhi meri lauta do Mehar ke saath” (You are divorcing me with rage in your eyes, Return to me, also, my youth along with the alimony)
Than again they met in 1969 for to start filming Pakeezah, Amrohi greeted her with a token payment with a guinea.

After the death of Amrohi, the only place in cemetery was left was next to Meena and he was buried a inch part from her.

Derubalaji,
What a wonderful write-up. She had a futile love affair with Dharmendra and some say Gulzar too. But I don’t think Gulzar used her poems. She was a shagird of Gulzar who did isslaha (coorection) of her poems and hence some rang of Gulzar was bound to reflect in her poetry. One more thing about Meenaji, she was an ardent fan of James Hadley Chase novels and used to read them between shots.
