Eid aayi hai aayi hai eid aayi hai

Posted on: August 20, 2012

Guess what song I stumbled upon a brief while ago ! I came across a rare song about Eid on the eve of the festival.

This song is as obscure as any. It is from a movie called “Rashida Dulhan” which was made sometime in late 1940s or early 1950s I guess but was never released. The songs of this movie, or at least this song managed to survive though.

Here is this delightful Eid song from “Rashid Dulhan”. It is sung by Shamshad Begam. Umar Ansari is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

I have been unable to get a few words correctly in the song. I request music lovers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks.
PS-I thank Sudhir jee for providing corrections in the lyrics.

I request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie as well as on this song.

I take this opportunity to wish a very happy Eid to all.

PS-In addition to providing corrections in the lyrics, Sudhir jee has now provided the translation of this song as well.

Song-Eid aayi hai aayi hai eid aayi hai(Rashid Dulhan)(1950) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Umar Ansari, MD-Ghulam Mohammad

Lyrics

eid aayi hai
aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai
aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai

uthhaoo subu
dil ka mainkhana kholo
uthhaoo subu
eid ka chaand saaqi ki angdaayi hai
eid ka chaand saaqi ki angdaayi hai
eid aayi hai
aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai

dil hai masroor
aankhon mein dorey padey
ae
ho o
dil hai masroor
aankhon mein dorey padey
gale milte hain khush hoke chhote bade
gale milte hain khush hoke chhote bade
eid aayi hai
aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai

kyun na dil se mile dil
nazar se nazar
ho o o
kyun na dil se mile dil
nazar se nazar
ho o o
kyun na ithhlaaye aakhir naseem-e-sahar
kyun na ithhlaaye aakhir naseem-e-sahar
baagh e jannat se khushboo udaa laayi hai
baagh e jannat se khushboo udaa laayi hai
eid aayi hai
aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai
aayi hai
eid aayi hai
eid aayi hai

eid aayi hai, aayi hai, eid aayi hai

Lo, the joyous celebrations of eid are here

Let us do the wazoo with the waters of Kausar
The moon sighting of Eid today
Is the grace of the Almighty
Open up your heart, raise the subu
And fill it with His blessings

(NOTES:
hauz = a reservoir of water
kausar = the name of a stream in paradise
wazoo = ablution, the tradition of cleansing hands, feet and face with water before offering the Namaaz (prayers)
subu = pitcher of wine
saaqi = literally it means the bearer of wine, one who provides the wine; in context, the reference is to the Almighty, who is blessing his people, with all his grace

dil hai masroor, aankhon mein dorey padey
gale milte hain khush hoke chhote bade

There is happiness in the heart
There is a stupor in the eyes
The young and the old
All embrace each other with happiness today
The blessings, the resonance of prayers
Abound in all directions

(NOTES:
masroor = happy, delighted
dorey = literally means a thread, specifically a red colored thread
aankhon mein dorey = in context, there is a pinkish, rose colored shine in the eyes; generally such a shine comes either when one is drunk, or when one is high with excitement or happiness
rahmaten = blessings, grace
hamd = prayers, in the praise of Allaah, the Almighty
har su = in all directions
ghataa chhaai hai = like the clouds pervading in all directions

It is the day to make friends
For the hearts and eyes to meet in happiness
The cool gentle breeze of the morning
Is displaying airs of pride, and why not
It has brought today
The fragrance from the gardens of heaven

(NOTES:
naseem = breeze
naseem-e-sahar = cool gentle breeze of early morning
baagh-e-jannat = the gardens of heaven

Atul ji,
RASHID DULHAN -1942 was never released.
There were 8 songs in the film and all were recorded on 4 records of 78 RPM.The songs were sung by Sitara,Shamshad,GMDurrani and Uma Devi.

If the MD for this film was Ghulam Mohammad and the singer was Shamshad Begum, the film could not possibly belong to 1942. Ghulam Mohammed was Bombay (Mumbai) based musician assisting Naushad in the 40s and Shamshad Begum shifted to Bombay some time in 1944.

Just a thought.

This film was probably not made in Bombay.Lyricist Umar Ansari was Gulam Mohd.’s brother in law,who was working in Lahore that time.he has written the lyrics.Umar Ansari did not migrate to India and continued in Pakistan.he was in the Lahore University. He however provided Lyrics to gulam Mohd in one more Indian film-Sheesha-52,for which Gulam Mohd was the composer.
