Today (12 september) is Jaikishan’s birth anniversary. One half of the famous Shankar Jaikishan duo, Jaikishan had died quite young at an age of 41 on this day in 1971. He achieved so much at such a young age . The Shankar Jaikishan duo were easily the most dominant and prolific music directors of the golden era of Hindi movie music.
This blog discusses Hindi movie songs, predominantly from the golden era of Hindi movie music, which was from 1950 to 1980. We in this blog discuss songs without any special preferences or biases, so the statistics that this blog has built up over its over fours years of existence can be taken as a fair reflection of the state of affairs of Hindi movie music of the past.
Statistics of this blog show that Shankar Jaikishan have the most number of songs in the blog among all music directors- 584 excluding this song. These songs are from about 130 movies. It is to be kept in mind that Shankar continued to compose music after 1971 too using the name of Shankar Jaikishan, though that music was not quite what we as music lovers are accustomed to.
On this occasion, here is a song from “Kathputli” (1957). This song is sung by Mukesh and Lata. It is picturised as a stage performance song on Agha and Vyjyanti Mala.
Shailendra is the lyricist.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Very nice selection of songs for Jaikishan’s anniversary. I found the song from ‘Aurat’ enchanting.
Regarding the second para above, and the status as ” a fair reflection of the state of affairs of Hindi movie music of the past. ” will be difficult to maintain, if there is too much concentration of celebrating ‘birthdays’ of all and sundry, especially those new actors who have nothing whatsoever to do with Golden era of HFM or films or even moderately good songs of subsequent years.
I strongly believe that some quality control is required while posting songs for 80’s and 90’s. Birthdays or whatever, the songs should be posted on merit only. Only this will ensure that this blog still has a fair reflection of state of affairs of hindi movie music 5-10 years from now.

I agree with Nahm also. I sent Atulji my excel sheet of anniv dates with Golden Era contributors up to 80s only with the oldest one being V Shantaram (born 1901) and few youngers like Johnny Lever, Sri Devi, Saif Ali Khan, which I included in my list after a song was posted on the blog and keeping the idea of sending this list to Atulji for his future reference. I am not too much aware of these new actors, MDs, lyricist or others. It’s not like I don’t appreciate new work, but love the time called Golden Era.

Jai Kishan was from Vansadaa (Guj). In his town a bronzed statue was unveiled by Anandjibhai. The statue was partly financed by the owner of Sugarmill from Bardoli.
His wife Pallavi, about 15 years of his junior, they were married eight years at the time of his death. Today three children Chetan, Yogesh and Bhairavi…all grown up. Both sons are married with children and have their
own business.
Pallavi & Bhairavi are fashion designers.
None of his children are in the music.

His name was Jaikishen Dayabhai Panchal from Gujarat. S met J at Chandravadan Bhatt’s office who had promised to give break to them. Basically he was a harmonium player S got him a job in Prithvi Theatres. Raj had serious disagreement with Ram Ganguli paving way for SJ in Barsaat.
After the success he was a regular visitor at Gaylord, near Churchgate and had a fixed place nobody would occupy even after his death. It was reserved for him forever. He hit the bottle and succumbed to it like so many Gujarati actors like Sanjeev Kumar, Siddarth Shah, Manmohan……they just could not hold their drinks.
