I checked in Dr Surjit Singh’s website to see whether I could find answer to the question mark over the singer of the song under discussion. All I could get was that there was a quiz programme held in Portland in which 24 songs were played and participants to the quiz programme were given the names of 22 singers from which after listening to these songs, they were to match the songs with the correct singers. One of the song was the one under discussion. In the solution to the quiz, this song was matched with singer A K Peshawari which I presume is the same as Akbar Khan Peshawari.
Of course, it can be argued that Dr Surjit Singh may have relied on the same sources availabe on various websites.
Anyway, the link to Dr Surjit Singh’s particular page in his website to which I referred to above is given below :

Kamath ji,
Thanks for drawing my attention to this reference.
Dr.Surjit Singh ji’s info can not be questioned, true;but the fact remains that Peshavari’s name does not feature in the cast and since there was no Playback system,it can not be him singing in the film.
Now,one more possibility remains and that is that this could be a version record, meaning that the film song was later sung by Peshawari and made into a record.
Then what about what Kardar has said about M.Hussain’s singing ?

One more point,I suddenly remembered-
If the other 3 song mukhadas are available, then we can see if these too were from the film SULTANA.

Oh! I never thought of the possibility of the record version of the song.
As per earthmusic.net, Akbar Khan Peshawari has been accredited for only this song from ‘Sultaana’ (1934). There are other 8-9 songs from Sultaana for which singers names have not been given. I also did not come across other songs from this film on YT.
Akbar Khan Peshawari has been accredited with the following songs, the audio clips for which are available on YT:
Noor-E-Wahadat ( 1936) – aseer-e-rang-o-gham – MD : Motilal Naik
Sunhera Sansar (1936) – chhak chhak chali jaa rahi – MD : K C Dey
(Sonar Sansar in Bengali)
Milaap (1937) – pilla rahi hai to kuchh – MD: K C Dey
Postman/Abhilasa (1941) – hausala aashiq ko chaahiye dil lagaane
MD : Anil Biswas

Kamath ji,
I have checked all the 4 films. In none of the film cast, his name appears.Postman/Abhilasha was a 1938 film and not 41 as mentioned. In this film there is NO such song at all.In all other films names of singers are missing from the HFGK.Songs are there.
Looks like,Akbar bhai had a hobby of singing songs from various films and recording them.
It simply can not be that in all these films he was there but his name was intentionally hidden.
I contacted one of my Fb friends GIRIDHARILAL VISHWAKARMA ji from Rajasthan, who has posted hundreds of old, obscure songs on Surjit Singh ji’s site(you might have noticed his name) about this song.He replied that he has the song but there is no info about the singer.he has also sent me the MP3 version of the song to me with his reply.
now what ?

So back to square one 🙂
Until some new evidences come to our light, we may have to treat this song as a record version sung by Akbar Khan Peshawari.

kamath ji,
The mystery of this singer is finally solved. This was a Version song sung by Akbar Khan, who sang many other film version songs also,as mentioned by you.
In the film,it must have been sung by the MD, Mushtaq Hussain himself, which ofcourse we can never see.
I have today received reply from shri GIRDHARILAL VISHWAKARMA on this issue, which is the result of his painstaking research-

Singing first line of sha’ir twice, first questioning and than answering, is a ghazal singing seems to be the style of singing here. Even in second sha’ir same method of question and answer is used.
na ek lamha, bhi ja laaya kabhi is dar-e-faani mein
na ek lamha bhi ja, na aaya kabhi is dar-e-faani mein
The line repetition is so full of meaning that the second line of both sha’ir is becoming redundant/meaning less in comparison.
It would be great if the poet is known. Regarding the singer, some thing in the accent suggests towards a ‘barielvi”.

It is an interesting suggestion about singer’s accent pointing towards ‘barielvi’. Incidentally, the MD of this song Mushtaq Hussain is said to belong to Barielly from where Barielvi Movements started. Arun thinks that this song may have been sung by him in the film.

Its a wild guess. Leading classical singer Ustad Mushtaq Hussein belonged to Rampur Gharana and was generally accompanied on Tabla by Ahmed Jan Thirakwa. He did belong to Rampur and Bariely.Could he be the same person who also directed music in some films including Sultana. He could sing a ghazal and quite competently. I am a witness to that. But I have no claims as a film viewer or someone in the know of things related to old films, or even new.

Atul ji,
SULTANA-1934 must be a true ‘obsure’ film. The HFGK is silent on its Music Director or the Lyricist.Even the Record No.s are not available for whichever songs were recorded.
It is however mentioned ,giving ref of A.R.Kardar,that the songs of this film were sung by Zarina,Indubala and Mushtaq hussain. All these names also appear in the cast credits.obviously the Composer must be Mushtaq Hussain.
The other name RAGHUVEER RAMNATHKAR,which features in connection with this song, had given music to only ONE film-Sant Tulsidas-1934,that too along with Suresh Babu Mane(brother of Heerabai Badodekar and Saraswati Rane).
here is some info on the Music Director Mushtaq Hussain.
Mushtaq Hussain was from U.P. and was an acclaimed Ustad in classical music before entering films. His first film was Aurat ka Pyar-1933 and till Bombay-1949,he gave music to only 18 films. This was because he was very keen on rehersals of songs before filming them.NAUSHAD who was his assistant in Baghban and Industrial India-both 1938,picked up this habit of rehersals of songs from M.Hussain.When Naushad became independent ALL singers had to do the rehersals at Naushad’d ground floor music room in his Bandra Bungalow. This habit had cost him some films like Azaad also, but he was not bothered.
M.Hussain was specialised in Gazals and thumaries. He used singers like Mukhtar Begum,Ashraf Khan(who later became a Sufi saint and in whose ‘URS’,prominent film personalities like Dilip kumar and Mahesh Bhatt also participate every year even today),fakr e alam Kawwal,Afzal Lahori,Ameerbai,Zahoor Raja,Shahu Modak(Film Aadmi fame),Shantareen and Ram Sahgal. Most these names are unknown today.
He died in 1982 at Bombay.

There are three more songs sung by Akbar Khan Durrani Peshwari available on YT and in my view, voices in all these songs match. Also I remember uploader mentioning in one of many of his uploads on YT (I am not able to get that comment) that he has been uploading the rare songs of 30s and 40s from old gramophone records collected by his grand father. If so, probably he must be mentioning the names of singers and MD printed on the records. Incidentally, in those days, names of lyricists were not mentioned on the records.

Atul ji/ Kamath ji,
In those days, even singer’s names were also not printed on the records. The 1932 First ever records of Madhuri, which are available,do not contain names of anybody except the film name and the year.even the early prabhat records of sairandhri etc. do not contain names of singers till the second half of 1930s,especially after the playback started.that too on the Bombay side it was only after 1937 Mahageet.
Therefore it is unlikely that there will be names on his records.
Further, since there was no playback, the singer must be in the film and singing himself too.The name of Akbar khan durrani Peshawari does not appear in the credits which has only Gul Hamid, mazhar khan,Nazir,Shivratan Joshi,Teela mohammed,Lala,Pahilwan,Hussain,Nawab,Zarina, indubala and Mushtaq Hussain.
if the voices in other 3 songs match, they all may belong to mushtaq hussain and the singer’s name may be misleading. To me there is no way, other than considering that these songs were sung by Mushtaq Hussain.
One thing is sure.We neither know M.Hussain’s voice nor Peshawari’s voice. So we have to use the circumstantial evidence like,Kardar’s statement and the Film Cast credit list.

And thanks Arun for the details about Mushtaq Hussain which I was not aware of. I had read at one place (probably on YT) that he belonged to Bareily. I also came across a name Mushtaq Hussain Bareilywala. I guess they are the same person.
