Bhooli huyi yaad aayee kahaani

While most Hindi movies of the early days used stories from Indian mythological tales, there were a few movie makers who looked westward into Arabian/ Persian tales. Then there were a few who looked even further into tales of Western world and used them.
The tale of Tarzan was used in Hindi movies beginning from 1937. The original Hindi Tarzan movie was called “Toofaani Tarzan” (1937). This movie was a Wadia Movietone production. It was directed by Homi Wadia. The movie had John Cawas in the title role. The starcast of the movie had John Cawas, Gulshan, Boman Shroff, Chandrashekhar, Nazira, Dalpat, Ahmed Dilwar etc. A wonderful review of this movie is available in Memsaab’s blog.
Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Ahmad Dilawar. Pt Gyan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Master Mohammad.
seeing that the name of Ahmad Dilawar figures in the credits, I assume that the song is picturised on him as well.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

waapis thhe raaja ai ahed-e-faani

haay mohabbat haay jawaani
saawan ki bheegi bheegi fizaan mein
dil ka fasaana jaag ke sunana
dil ka fasaana jaag ke sunana
apni kahaani dil ko sunaani
haay mohabbat haay jawaani
haay mohabbat haay jawaani
guzri jawaani ?? lekin

soz-e-mohabbat abb takk baaqi
soz-e-mohabbat abb takk baaqi
ye aag shaayad hai jaavedaani
ye aag shaayad hai jaavedaani
haay mohabbat haay jawaani
haay mohabbat haay jawaani

Is this Dalpat in the list of actors is Dalpat Joshi? Arunji, can you help please? Brother of my father’s very close friend (and his distant cousin too) had acted in few Hindi movies. I am not sure if he is the same DJ. I can call and ask my father, but thought Arunji or someone would know it too.

Dalpat, or “Dalpat Kaka” as he was called later on, often acted in b-grade fantasy/mythological/devotional types, alladin aur jadui chirag, magic carpet, tarzan aur jadui chirag, etc, from 1930s to 1970s. Toofani Tarzan is possibly his first movie. I have heard of Dalpat Joshi, and I’m not sure if this Dalpat is same as Dalpat Joshi, but one thing I know from watching movies of Dalpat, that u can find the traces of Gujarati accent in his spoken hindi.
