Bartan kalai karaa lo

Posted on: October 29, 2012

One post in two days is considered good enough for most blogs, but not this one. 🙂 There was one post yesterday and none so far today and that is slow going by the standards of this blog where six to seven songs a day is the norm.

I am back again, and so the normal service will resume from tomorrow. 🙂

“Girls Hostel” (1962) is a by now forgotten movie. This movie was a B R Films Production and it was directed by Ravindra Dave. the movie had Ajit, Chand Burque, Johnny Walker, Nalini Jaywant, Shashi Raj, Geetanjali etc in it.

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is another song from the movie. This song is sung by Rafi and its music is composed by Ravi. Only the audio of this song is available and the lyricist of this song is not known.

From the sounds of it, the song is a light hearted song and a parody of a few old songs, Rafi’s singing style is almost a giveaway that the song may have been picturised on Johny Walker. I reruest our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Bartan kalai karaa lo (Girls Hostel)(1962) Singer-Rafi, MD-Ravi

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

hum yaar ki gali mein pukaare chale gaye
hum yaar ki gali mein pukaare chale gaye
kya

bartan kalaayi karaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo
aashiq hain hum nikhattoo
hum ko na dekho bhaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo bhai

tere kooche mein bin joote
watan se chalke aaya hoon
tere kooche mein bin joote
watan se chalke aaya hoon
main dil ki har tamanna
asli ghee mein tal ke laayaa hoon
main dil ki har tamanna
asli ghee mein tal ke laayaa hoon

naakaam hoke teri gali se na jaaunga
din raat tere ghar ke hi
chakkar lagaaunga
badnaam ho gaya to koi
gham nahin mujhe
main aashiqon ki list mein to aa hi jaaunga
kehta rahoonga main yahi jab tak hoon kanwaara
aaa
kya

bartan kalayi karaalo
bartan kalayi karaalo
aashiq hain hum nikhattoo
hum ko na dekho bhaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo

ek tera sahaara
ek tera sahaara
ek tera sahaara
ek tera sahaara
duniya yahi chaahti hai
main reh jaaoon kunwaara
ek tera sahaara

gar pyaar tere dil mein hai
ghar chhod ke aaja
tu khidkiyaan darwaaze sabhi tod ke aaja
deewaana tera dekh le marne ko chala hai
aaja ki yahi waqt hai
tu daud ke aajaa
kooche mein tere aake lagaaya hai ye naara
kya

bartan kalayi karaalo
bartan kalayi karaalo
aashiq hain hum nikhattoo
hum ko na dekho bhaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo
bartan kalaayi karaalo

Atul Ji, in the song details below the YT video, the singer is specified as Lata instead of Rafi.

Khyati ji, Atul ji,

What a fun filled song this one is; heard it for the first time today, and just love it so. 🙂

Another song to demonstrate that with due patience, one can find a song from Hindi films to fit almost any situation.

The Geet Kosh lists three lyricists for this film – Gulshan Baawra, SH Behari and Asad Bhopali. However, specific song assignment to specific lyricist is not available for all songs, including this one.

It would be fun to identify the original songs behind the parodies included in this song.

1. “Hum Yaar Ki Gali Mein Pukaare Chale Gaye”
is based on “Hum Bekhudi Mein Un Ko Pukaare Chale Gaye” from ‘Kaala Pani’ (1958) – Rafi, SD Burman.

2. “Tere Kooche Mein Bin Joote. . .”
is based on “Tere Kooche Mein Armaanon Ki Duniya Le Ke Aaya Hoon” from “Dillagi” (1949) – Rafi, Naushad.

3. Two of the antaraas “Nakaam Ho Ke Teri Gali Se Na Jaaunga” and “Gar Pyaar Tere Dil Mein Hai Ghar Chhod Ke Aa Ja” appear to be based on the music of the antaraas of the song “O Dilbar Jaaniye, Tere Hain Hum Tere”. Remember the lines “O Bewafaa Tu Ne Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhoda”. However this song belongs to the film ‘Haseena Maan Jaayegi’ which came in 1968.
Is there any other song prior to 1962 that has the same tune?

4. “Ik Tera Sahaara. . . ”
is based on the song with the same refrain, “Ik Tera Sahaara. . .” from the film ‘Shama’ (1946) – Shamshad Begum, Ghulam Haider.

5. “Bartan Kali Karaa Lo. . .”
This one part of the parody I am not able to place exactly, although it is spinning somewhere in the back of my mind. Please help to identify the correct song behind this.

🙂 🙂

Sudhirji,
This song was also a surprise for me. I was just looking for a song on YT and just like wiki, YT also leads to a place from where it’s impossible to go back to the song from which you started your search.
Thanks for the list of original songs. I can’t identify the original song for the part Bartan kalai karaa lo…… Hope someone would know OR may be you will remember after the “spinning” thing will come to the STOP 😆

Khyati ji,

Kya mazedaar gaana dhoondh nikaala hai aap ne !

Atul ji,

It is good to see a category of “Johnny Walker” song. Similarly “Mehmood song ” category could also be included.

As per excel sheet of Rafi songs, this song is picturized on Johnny Walker and the lyricist is Gulshan Bawra.

The tag of “Parody song” needs to be added.

Thanks.

To my ears the part ‘Bartan Kalai Kara Lo” sounds like ‘Saathi Haat Badhaana’ with minor changes…

Atul ji,
GIRL’S HOSTEL-1962 was a film by R.R.Films and directed by Ravindra Dave. The lead pair was Ajit and Nalini Jaywant. They acted together in 15 films as a lead pair and this was their last film as Hero/Heroine.
Ajit (Hamid Ali khan,27-1-1922 to 22-10-1998) was very popular in stunt and adventurous films due to his tall, strong body and a rustic handsomeness. He used to look fabulous in roles of Princes,Commanders and Maharajas. It was the director K.Amarnath who gave him the screen name of AJIT. By the end of 50s,he had already started working as a CO-Hero( Naya Daur),but in few films he continued to do lead roles.Soon he decided that it was better to do other roles if he has to survive in the industry.he chose to become Villain and SOORAJ-1966 was his first film as a Villain. In short,in the period of this film,it was difficult to digest him as a Hero.
Equally difficult was to take Nalini Jayawant( 18-2-1926 to 20-12-2010)
as a Heroine.Luckily, she stopped doing film roles with her last film Bombay Race Course-1965.She ,however ,appeared in Nastik-1983 in a small role, for the last time.
Ajit and N.J. did maximum films together-15 films-a Record of sorts !

Girl’s hostel was actually a misnomer for this film,as very little happened in the Hostel.Seth Shiv Ratan Rai and Sardar Martand Singh are good friends,One day they ,along with Ratna (N.J.),d/o Martand singh,go on a boat ride. There was a fire on the boat and it sank. There was no trace of anybody. It was believed that there was a fight over property and Rai killed Martand, put the boat on fire and escaped, killing father and daughter.
After few years,Shyam(Ajit),Ratan Rai’s son visits the island, stays in ‘Hotel Braganza” and tries to find the truth to absolve his father’s name from that crime. There is a murder attempt on his life.He finds a Ghost in the fort of the island, but learns soon that the ‘Ghost’ is the long lost daughter Ratna. He falls in her love.He also meets the second wife of Martand Singh,Ratna’s step mother and Mrs.Braganza who was the
“special friend” of Martand singh.
With the help of Ratna,Shyam solves the mystery of the boat and the murder. The second wife and the Hotel owner had hatched this plan.He also locates his father hiding for many years,in the fort of the island.
The film had nothing to boast about, except the fabulous music of the film by Ravi.An interesting thing about this film was that there were as many as 6 Dancers in this film,namely-Tresa,Tina,Madhu,Ulfat,Cuckoo and Kanchan.
