“Manzil” (1960) was a Kalpana Pictures production. It was directed by Mandi Burman. The movie had Dev Anand, Nutan, Mehmood, David, K N Singh, Badri Prasad, Achala Sachdev, Pratima Devi, Manmohan Krishna etc.
As many as four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
On the occasion of S D Burman’s death anniversary today (31 october), here is another song from “Manzil” (1960). This song is sung by Manna Dey and it is picturised on Mehmood.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.
Song-Arre hato kaahe ko jhoothhi banaao batiyaan (Manzil)(1960) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-S D Burman
Lyrics (Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
gair ka saath hai
ae ae
aur roz mulaqaaten hain
aen aen
pyaar hai uske liye
aur hum se faqat baaten hai
are hato
kaahe ko jhoothhi
banaao batiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
are banaao banaao
banaao batiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
aa aa aa aaa
aa aa aa aaa
ye udi udi si rangat
hun hun hun
ye khule khule se gesoo
teri subah keh rahi hai
teri raat ka fasaana
teri raat ka fasaana
dekho ji kisi ka pyaar
hamse na chhipaao
dekho ji kisi ka pyaar
hamse na chhipaao
sab hamen pataa hai pyaare
nain na jhukaao
nain na jhukaao
suno kehti hain kya kya
kehti hain kya kya
tumhaari ankhiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
banaao ae banaao
banaao batiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
banaao batiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
hey bana
na dhin dhin na
na dhin dhin na
na dhin dhin na
na dhin dhin na
na dhin dhin na
hey banaao batiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
banaao batiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
banaao batiyaan
hato kaahe ko jhoothhi
banaao haan
hey banaao batiyaan
kaahe ko jhoothhi
batiyaan
jhoothi batiyaan kaahe ko banaao
jhoothi batiyaan kaahe ko banaao
jhoothi batiyaan kaahe ko banaao
hey hey banaao
ho ho banaao
(lay jara uthaake bhaiyya)
hey banaao batiyaan
aa aa aa aaa aaa
jhoothhi
ee ee ee
thee thee thee
thee ee ee eee

No offence intended, but my sentiments and my preferences are exactly opposite. I believe Manna Da’s voice is just the right one for such kind of songs. I am sure the seasoned music directors used his voice for specific songs becaue they knew the qualities of his voice, better than us, I dare say.
Whatever one many write about Manna Da’s voice, one can simply not fault him for lack of versatility. Comparisons are not necessary, nor will comparisons be just.

This is a rip off parody of very famous Bhairavi none other by Ustad Faiyyaz Khansaheb (Banao Batiya….)…and Manna da does an excellent job as situation demands. I really found it fantastic….there are even subtle hints of Bol Baant….

With no offend to Mannada, his voice does not suit these type of songs. In other words he has no verstality in his voice as Rafi and Kishore, he was as plain as Mukesh.

I felt that way when I was in my pre teens and teens. Now I feel far more respectful towards Manna Dey’s singing abilities. In any case I do not think one needs to compare among singers to prove someone better than others. Every singer has his own unique features that are God given and cannot be replicated or taught. It is naive to believe that Mukesh (for instance) was limited in his singing abilities. He had a rich voice that many classically trained singers do not have. There were dimensions and nuances in his singing voice that cannot be taught/replicated. It is the uniqueness in the voices plus other qualities (that go well beyond the grammar of singing) that make a singer what he is.

In the words of dhrupad maestro ram chatur mallick, singers voice are god gifted, it is like Tulsi leaves, small or big, it has same value. The godly voice must be respected. Even if one singer has one value he can be cherished of, he is representing work of god.

I would prefer to differ from you. I find that his voice did have many nuances to it. Come to appreciate him more and more. I think SDB has made good use of his voice here and also in sanjh dhali.

Goelji,
Aap Rasgulla, Gulabjamun aur Rasmalai ki tulnaa ek doosre ke saath kar rahe ho. Galat kar raho ho. Even though they are made of mawa and sugar only, they have their own “taste/flavor”. If I don’t like one sweet doesn’t mean it has a bad taste. I would rather say, it doesn’t suit my taste.
Just imagine, Rose, Champaka, Jasmin has same fragrance! Achha hai na ki Bhagwaan ne hamare liye is phool ko alag alag khushboo di hai.
Please don’t feel bad, these are just my thoughts. Hope you would cherish Manna Da’s next song as his own fragrance/flavor just like you do Rafi, KK, Mukesh or any other singer. 🙂

Goelji,
aapka shayad classical music ka vishesh gyan nahi hai, isiliye aap aisa comment kiye hai Manaa Dey ke upar.
If you say Manna Dey had a plain voice, then who ? Rafi, Kishore, Manna, Mukesh ….each is a stalwart….None is less than any other…
