Ro ro nain ganwaaun sajanwa aan milo

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie and a regular contributor to this blog.

A few months back, I came across a thumri ‘ro ro nain gawaaun sajanwaa aan milo’ sung by Ashraf Khan. I liked this thumri and assumed it to be a traditional thumri bandish rather than from a Hindi film. I marked it in my play list and forgot about it. It was only when I read an article on actor-singer Ashraf Khan written by Arun Kumar Deshmukh as part of a series of his articles on some lesser known singers for this blog that I realised that the thumri sung by Ashraf Khan which I referred to earlier was in fact a thumri based song from the film ‘Baaghbaan’ (1938).

I was aware of Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Baaghbaan’ (2003) under B R Chopra’s banner but never knew that a film by similar name was released as early as 1938. The information on IMD and other sources on the internet revealed that the film was produced under the banner of General Films and directed by A R Kardar. The star cast included B Naderkar, Bimla Kumari, Sitara Devi, Mirza Musharraf, Yakub, Wasti, K N Singh, Ashraf Khan, Yasmin, Putlibai ( probably the same actress who became famous by her new name Shamim Ara in Pakistani film industry).

A feature of this song is that there are no orchestration between stanzas but there are very short musical interludes between first and second lines of antras. After listening to this thumri based song many times, I can say that the voice and emotions could have come only from a Godly man. Although this song is addressed to the beloved, Ashraf Khan’s rendition gives me a feel of a devotional song as if addressed to the Almighty. Lyrics of the song were written by Mirza Musharraf. Mustaq Hussain composed the music for the film. I guess, he was the same person known as Ustad Mustaq Hussain Khan, the renowned Hindustani classical singer belonging to Rampur Gharana.

Only audio clip is available of this song. Since Ashraf Khan also acted in this film, it is apparent that this song must have been picturised on him.

Song-Ro ro nain ganwaaun sajanwa aan milo (Baaghbaan)(1938) Singer-Ashraf Khan, Lyrics-Mirza Musharraf, MD-Mushtaq Hussain

Lyrics

sajanaa aa aa aa waa

sundar sapnaa sirf tumhi ho

aa aa aa aaa
sajanwaaa aa waaa
aa aa aa aaa
ro ro nain ganwaaun
sajnwaa aan milo o o o
