Kaho meri sarkaar tabeeyat kaisi hai

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
A new film on the blog. And another one that tells us that the producers will go after some very strange names as the film title. Hollywood may have come out with films like ‘Telefon’, ‘Cellular’, ‘Phone Booth’ etc. much later. The Hindi film industry already had a film titled ‘Trunk Call’ way back in 1960. And today this film makes a debut on this blog.
The film is a production from the banner of Mayfair Films, Bombay. It is produced by Kanwal Nayyar and T C Dewan, and is directed by Balraj Mehta. The star cast includes Shyama, Abhi Bhattacharya, Pran, Shammi, Randhir, Helen, Uma, Rajan Haksar, Keshav, Dolly, Nazir, Henry, Chandra Kumar,K L Kapoor, Darshan etc. And if one comes to know that the music is by Ravi,
then one can expect to find some very zippy and melodious songs in this film. And going by this first song presented, this expectation seems to be well founded. This wonderful foot tapping duet sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle, comes from the pen of Qamar Jalaalaabadi.
Only the audio of this song is available, so it is difficult to comment on its picturzation. Looking at the star cast, one may expect that maybe Shyama can be doing this song on screen, but knowing Abhi Bhattacharya, it seems hard to imagine him doing such a song. But one may never outguess what the producer and director may have accomplished. And so I would
request our knowledgeable team members to add more information about this film an this song.
A very fast paced quickfire exchange between young lovers. Very interesting lyrics, and a rhythm that simply does not falter, keeps on with the momentum throughout the song. What an uplifting melody from fifty two years ago.
Enjoy.
Song-Kaho meri sarkaar tabeeyat kaisi hai (Trunk Call)(1960) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Ravi
Lyrics
kaho meri sarkaar tabeeyat kaisi hai
jhoothon ke sardaar ye aadat kaisi hai
kaho meri sarkaar tabeeyat kaisi hai
jhoothon ke sardaar ye aadat kaisi hai
mausam hai bahaar ka
pehle pehle pyaar ka
meethi taqraar ka
aayaa hai mazzaaa
chalo hato jaao ji
baaten na banaao ji
hamen na sataao ji
milegaa tumhen kyaa
milegaa ji kyaa
tumko kya maaloom ye chaahat kaisi hai
paagal se hai pyaar ye kismet kaisi hai
kaho meri sarkaar tabeeyat kaisi hai
jhoothon ke sardaar ye aadat kaisi hai
aa haaa
ae hey
waa waa
pyaar is ka naam hai
to door se salaam hai
honay lagi shaam hai ji
hum to chaley
chaal laajawaab hai
gussa be-hisaab hai
apna dil nawaab hai
lo hum bhi chaley
hum bhi chaley
dekh liyaa dildaar mohabbat kaisi hai
kar daala beemaar ye aafat kaisi hai
haay
kaho meri sarkaar tabiyat kaisi hai
jhoothon ke sardaar ye aadat kaisi hai
jaane ko to jaaoge
dekho phir jo aaoge
badey pachhtaa’ogey jo
hum na miley
aisa
waah
banti to anjaan ho
badi shaitaan ho
puraani meharbaan ho ji
chhodo ye giley
chhodo ye giley
ab ye thaanedaar riyaayat kaisi hai
waah re tera pyaar ye ulfat kaisi hai
kaho meri sarkaar tabeeyat kaisi hai
hoye
jhoothon ke sardaar ye aadat kaisi hai

I had seen the movie at Mumbai’s Imperial Cinema, when it was released. Abhi Bhattacharya had played the role of a secret agent in this thriller! I don’t remember much about the movie, but it is quite possible that he must have sung this song with Shyama. Abhi Bhattacharya, though was very good actor, was misfit in this movie as a dashing detective!

Dial M for Murder (1954) by Alfred Hitchcock comes to mind as one of the most famous early “Phone” movies from Hollywood.
