Dil agar hai paas to huzoor zara laaiye

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Type casting in the film world does not always apply to actors only. Artists in other categories also sometimes suffer the vagaries of being type cast into a particular mould. And much as they try to get away from that image, the perception of the success factor somehow conspires to keep them tied down to the image. There are hugely talented artists in all categories who have been sidelined, much before their full potential could be enjoyed by the viewers and listeners. Granted that there can me more reasons for their fading away before time, but yes, this typecasting has been a significant factor.

Many listeners would recognize the wonderfully created songs such as “Shiqwa Tera Mein Gaaun, Dil Mein Samaane Waale” (‘Anmol Ratan’, 1950, Lata, Talat), “Laakhon Mein Ek Hamaare Sainyyaan” (also ‘Anmol Ratan’,1950, Nirmala Devi), “Kaaga Re Jaa Re Jaa Re” (‘Wafaa’, 1950, Lata), “Mann Mera Jhoom Jhoom Lehraaye”, ‘Titli’, 1951), “Ek Dil Hazaar Gham” ,(‘Aag Ka Dariyaa’, 1953, Talat). But many will not remember that the music for these lovely songs is created by Vinod. Vinod, the composer who, forever and eternity will be associated with and remembered for “Laara Lappaa”(‘Ek Thi Ladki’, 1949, Lata, GM Durrani, Rafi). No doubt that this song will always be in the list of top 50 Hindi film songs of all times, but the success of this one song made Vinod a music director of humor and comedy songs. So strong was this association in the minds of the industry that many of his later films simply carry the title that spell comedy – ‘Oot Pataang’ (1955), ‘Sheikh Chilli’ (1956), ‘Makheechoos’ (1956), ‘Garma Garam’ (1957), and even a film whose title simply is ‘Haa Haa Hee Hee Hoo Hoo’ (1955). To add to this is the unexpected and untimely demise of this hugely talented composer at a very young age of only 37. (He passed away in 1959, as a result of sepsis contracted from something as simple as a shaving cut).

This song is from the 1955 film ‘Shri Naqad Narayan’. This is one more in the string of comedy films that Vinod composed for. A production from the banner of Kamdhenu Films, Bombay, it is produced by Suraj Narayan Kanav and is directed by IS Johar. The star cast of this film includes Meena (i.e. Meena Shorey), Motilal, Om Prakash, Majnu, Badri Prasad, Murad, Leela Misra, Baby Naaz and Shirin. The film has 11 songs in all, with the lyrics coming from PL Santoshi, Verma Malik, Madhup Sharma and Qamar Jalaalabaadi. This particular song is from the pen of Qamar Sb. The singing voice is that of Shamshad Begum who has rendered this song with enthusiasm and gusto, complete with the sound of “daari a da, daari daari a da”. It seems like Vinod was maybe trying to recreate the magic of ‘Laara Lappaa’.

The video of this song is not available, but my guess would be that song is performed by Meena Shorey on the screen. This movie is one that I do not know much about, and I request our more knowledgeable contributors and readers to please add more information. In any case, here is a very fast paced number from the baton of Vinod. Enjoy.
