Jaan e man ek nazar dekh le

Posted on: January 16, 2013

This article is writteb by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I have recently seen the movie “Mere Mehboob” (1963) on Youtube, as recommended by the comments on the post of the song Tere pyaar mein dildaar jo hai mera haal e zaar .

I liked the movie mainly due to the speed with which the proceedings are over at each stage in the narration. A few longish scene’s in the movie belong to ‘Johny Walker’ who is a friend and confidante’ of Rajendra Kumar. Apart from the songs the longest time the story stops is a mushaira being conducted by Johnny Walker at his home. All in all the movie is a bit stereotypical but enjoyable. It has a happy ending with Ameeta who is Sadhana’s friend having the last word ‘Anwar miyaan(Rajendra Kumar) ne samjha ki unhon ne muhobbat bech di aur ham ne kharid lee………….” There are the usual emotional drama, romantic scenes and misunderstandings etc. but everything is over so quickly that an actor like Pran who is the villian, and a cousin of Ameeta wants to marry Sadhana is having just four scene and no dialogues in one of them. He is not given much opportunity to do his villiangiri and supposedly gives up with good grace.

On going through the list that there is one song from “Mere Mehboob’ which is remaining to be posted. This song is duet by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle but being sung on screen only by Ameeta. Many a times we have seen one singer giving playback to different actors singing the song on screen. This must be a rare occassion when a duet is performed on screen by one actor, playing a single character. The ‘taqreeb’ is the engagement of Sadhana and Rajendra kumar.

The Naushad- Shakeel Badayuni team is delivering a situational song with correct amount of congratulations and good wishes, with some teasing giving Ameeta ample chance to express here feelings. A rare duet of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle , and this is likely the last song of this film. I am not sure if one or two songs were cut in the movie print that I saw. It is a well known fact that Naushad favoured Lata Mangeshkar. It is possible that this song was meant to be sung by both Sadhana and Ameeta but the plan changed after the song was recorded.

Lyrics

jaan-e-man ek nazar dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le
dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le

tere sadqe idhar dekh le
jaan-e-man ek nazar dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le

yeh bahaaren yeh chaman
sab khushi se hain magan
choome qadmon ko tere
chaand ki pehli kiran
chaand ki pehli kiran
oo oo
aaa aaaa
jaan-e-jaan rooh-e-wafaa
dil hai deewaana tera

dil hai deewaana tera
chaahe apnaa na samajh
neechi nazren to utthhaa
gair hi jaan kar dekh le

dekh le
jaan-e-man ek nazar dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le
dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le

aaa aaaa
aaaaaaaa
aa aa aa
jo bhi marzi hai teri
hai wohi meri khushi
meri jaanib se tujhe
ho mubaarak yeh ghadi

ho mubaarak yeh ghadi
aaa
aaaaa
zulf ki chhaaon tale
pyaar ka daur chale
pyaar ka daur chale
shaam-e-furqat mein agar
koyi jaltaa ho jale
tu khushi ki sahar dekh le
dekh le
jaan-e-man ek nazar dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le

dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le

husn e Yousuf ki qasam
dagmagaate hain qadam
jee mein aata hai yahi
chheen loon teraa sanam

aaa aaaa
aaaaaa aaa
le ke na’eymat-e-adaa
maan ehsaan meraa
maine har jazba-e-dil
tujh pe qurbaan kiyaa
meraa dil aur jigar dekh le
dekh le
jaan-e-man ek nazar dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le

dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le
tere sadqe
tere sadqe idhar dekh le
jaan-e-man ek nazar dekh le
tere sadqe idhar dekh le

ओssss

आssss आssssss

आsss आssss

आssssss

आss आss आss आss

आsss

आssssss

आsss आssss

आsssss आsss

Nahm ji

Yes, a wonderful song, a wonderful reminder.

Suggestion for a couple of corrections.

The line “husn yoon su ki qasam”
might be read as
“husn-e-yusuf ki qasam”.
Yusuf (or Prophet Joseph) was famed to be a very beautiful person.

Also, the line “le ke na’eymat ki adaa”
might be read as
“le ke na’eymat-e-adaa”
meaning – accompanied with the blessings of beauty and grace.

Right sir, you are correct. I and my friend who is an Asha fan, both tried very hard and to decipher the words in that line. I should have thought of this. Normally we dont look for such references to prophets in the film songs.

Thanks a lot for clarifying. I should refer to you ( your source of guidance ) whenever i have a doubt.

And the word ‘na’eymat’ is a one time ‘usage’ (in film songs) word of urdu, which i believe cannot be translated perfectly.

Regards.

I think the the correct line is:

Lekin ai nafs e ada

Maan ahsaan mera…

This makes couplet more consistent in meaning.

Nafs word in Urdu used to emphasize meanings like soul, essense etc. for example nafs e mazmoon, nafs e kalam etc.
