O babu babu good bye

Posted on: January 18, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Searching for the early songs of Chitragupt, I found this wonderful duet that I had not heard before. This from the film ‘Shoukeen’ from 1949. The film is produced under the banner of Gautam Chitra, Bombay, and is directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. This is another stunt film that came the way of Chitragupt for music direction. The star cast of this film includes Bhagwan, Baburao, Chand Barq, Kanta, Yunus, Nadir, Baalaram, Seetaram. And the dog Moti once again has a place in the credits.

There are seven songs listed for this film, five of which are from the pen of Shyam Hindi, and two are written by a poet named Anjum. Such references turn out to be a compiler’s nightmare, for now one is not sure which Anjum this one is. There are five poets with the name Anjum in the Geet Kosh –Anjum Jaipuri, Anjum Pilibhiti, Anjum Rahti, Anjum Rehmani and the one that is simply Anjum. So till we get any furhter confirmation from the readers or other sources, we have to go with the name ‘Anjum’ only.

The song is an interesting tete-a-tete between a gentleman who is imploring for attention and is pleading the lady to kindly take care of his ‘naazuk dil’ (fragile and delicate heart). The lady on the other hand does not seem to care, and insists on bidding a good bye. When the gentleman pleads that he will die without her, the lady’s response is, ‘well, it is good that he will be free of the problems of this world’. All in all, a very interesting exchange between a love struck gentleman, and an apparently ne’er-do-care lady.

The singing voices are an enigma once again. There are two other duets in this film that have the names of Shanti Sharma and Chitragupt as the singers. But this song does not carry specific names in the Geet Kosh. I found that there are other online references using the names of Shanti Sharma and Chitragupt for this song also, but then this needs to be confirmed.

A very well sung duet, the prickliness and the naughtiness comes across very clearly. Enjoy.

O babu babu good bye
tere jeb mein rupiya na aanna na pai

Hey gentleman
This now is goodbye
Your pockets are empty
(what would you expect)

(NOTE: the phrase ‘rupiya na aanna na pai’ refers to the units of money –‘rupiya’ is rupee, ‘aanna’ is an old unit which used to be equal to 6 paise, when the rupee was equal to 96 paise. This was before the currency system in India was decimalized in 1957, to make 1 rupee equal to 100 paise. However, the informal use of the term ‘aanna’ still continues with a slight change that now 25 paise coin is called as 4 aanna and 50 paise coin is called as 8 aanna, and so on. The word ‘pai’ refers to paise.)

ye rupya ye aana, do din ka fasaana
mere dil ke saamne jhhotha hai maal aur khazaana
tere pyaar ne kaisi ye haalat banaai

All this money, all this talk of money
Is but a tale lasting just two days
All the riches and treasures are false, worthless
Compared to the emotions of my heart
Just see, the state I am in
All because of love for you

ye ant shant baaten aur pech-daar ghaaten
chalegi na teri yahaan
tu de rahaa hai jhaanse, ja door ho yahaan se
tere paas dil hi kahaan
tujhe dekh ke hanse hai saari khudaai

Ah, spare me this nonsense talk
And don’t try any clever tricks
They will not work on me
You are faking, and deceiving me
Go away, go far away from my sight
You don’t have heart
(Don’t make a laughingstock of yourself)
The entire world is laughing at you

tere bina dear mera ye naazuk dil
haaye toot jaayege

(I beseech you)
My fragile and delicate heart
It will break, without you

kya hai buraa is mein, duniya ke jhagdon se
achha hai chhoot jaayega

Oh well, all for the good
This way you will be relieved
From all the problems in this world

main jaan apni de doonga

I will sacrifice my life
(In your pursuit)

is mein poochta hai kya
arre ja ja ja, o farhaad aur majnu ke baap

Oh all the better
Don’t wait, don’t ask
(Just do it)
And stop acting like you are the father of Farhaad and Majnoon
Just go away

(NOTE: Farhaad and Majnoon are two legendary heroes of romantic tales in the east. Both the tales have tragic endings.)
