Can there be a child who has not read the story of Alibaba or Alladin or Sindbad the sailor ? All of us have read these stories in our younger days,but not many know that these stories are from ‘Arabian Nights’ or ‘ The 1001 Nights’.
These are the books of collection of stories from West and south Asia. The history of this book is very complex. Suffice to say that it is a composite work and that the earliest tales came from India and Persia. Perhaps in the 8th century, these were translated in Arabic and authors from every generation went on adding stories to it. However, the basic Framework of the story remains the same for centuries.
King Shahriyar of Persia is shocked to discover that not only his brother’s wife but his own wife is not faithful to their spouses. he has both women executed. Having lost faith in women, he orders his Vazir to bring one Virgin everyday to him,for marriage. The next morning, she gets executed, to prevent her from being unfaithful.
At one point of time, the Vazir exhausts his supply and he is to be executed the next day. His daughter Sheherzad asks her father to marry her to the King. Her pleading forces him to offer her to the king and they are married. On the first night of Marriage, Sheherzad starts telling a story to the king for whole night, but does not complete it. The story is so interesting that the King postpones her execution.
Second night she continues and whole night the story remains incomplete….this way she tells him 1001 stories in 1001 nights. Finally a happy King pardons her.
These stories are collectively called “The Arabian Night” Stories. Many sources like Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic etc claim to be its root. However Historians’ consensus is that it is a composite work of many authors.
Many stories from this book have been made into films in Hollywood and Bollywood.
One such film was ” The Golden Blade”-1953, starring Rock Hudson and Piper Laurie. Based on this film (or taking inspiration from this film), and combined with the fertile imagination of the ‘story department’ of All India Pictures, Bombay,a film by name HOOR E ARAB was made in 1955. Hoor means
Apsara or a heavenly beauty and Hoor E Arab means The Beauty from Arab.
This film was produced and directed by P.N.Arora( he is the same man who ditched Helen after 35 years of companionship. She was literally on the road, till Saleem Khan-Salman khan’s father- took her as his second wife and gave her a new lease of life and respect.)
The Lyricist was Shakeel Badayuni and the MD was the great Ghulam Mohammed. His assistant was Mohd Ibrahim-his own brother( who later gave music to few films himself). Ghulam Mohammed was one of the most respected composers of Bombay. Here are a few lines about him-
Ghulam Mohammed was born in Nalaa village of Rajasthan. His father taught him Tabla and Dholak. For some time he worked in touring Theatres of lahore and Bikaner, travelling a lot and learning about music from many stalwarts. He learnt Pakhwaz playing also.
In Bombay, he joined Saroj movietone and assisted Anil Biswas and Naushad from 1943 to 1951. His fiendship with Naushad continued till after his death, as Naushad completed his unfinished work of Pakiza later. His other brothers Mohd. Ibrahim and Abdul Kareem also played dholak. Together they developed a new way of playing dholak- with a ring on small finger and the Thumb. This system was typical of them and was popular with most composers.
His first film as a Music Director was Mera Geet-1946. Then came Doli, Tiger queen, Grihasti, Kajal, Paras, Ajib ladki, Ambar, Dil e nadan, Mirza ghalib(54), Parayi aas, Dil ki basti, Maang, Pagdi, Hanste aansoo, Nazneen, Sheesha, Laila Majnu, Rail ka dibba, Gauhar, Kundan, Do Gunde, Pak daman, Maalik, Shama and Pakiza. Some of his evergreen songs are from Dil e nadaan,Laila Majnu,Mirza Ghalib,Shaayar and Pakiza.
He had composed 17 songs for Pakiza, but after his death, only 9 were kept in the film. The rest 8 songs came out as an LP, titled “Pakiza-Rang Barang”.
Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad were his best friends. He died on 17-3-1968,after a massive Heart attack.
In 1955, his Mirza Ghalib became the FIRST film to get the First National Award. At that time Pt Nehru had praised him much.
After him his brothers continued playing dholak to major composers. His son Aziz Mohd. also is a musician.
The story line of HOOR E ARAB-55 is….
Shahnaz (Shashikala) is a dancer who is supposed to please customers. But she has her own ambitions and dreams. A Gypsy fortune Teller has told her that she will become a Queen. She is waiting for that day.
Prince Kamal is madly in her love and has expressed it to her also. He wants to marry her. If she has to be a queen, he must be a King first. This induces him to dethrone his elder brother King Hyder,( Pradeep Kumar) who escapes the massacre. He changes his royal clothes and comes to Shahnaz’s house as a common man. His belongings are stolen by a thief, who dies in accident and from his attire and rings in fingers, it is presumed that King Hyder is dead.
Kamal succeeds as a king and sends his wicked vazir to bring Shahnaz for marriage, but the cunning Vazir sells her to a slave merchant, who is about to re sell her to an Emir. Hyder and Shahnaz’s friend Bulbul (Chitra) come there and kidnap Shahnaz. Bulbul has recognized Hyder as the king but keeps quiet for his safety.
Now Hyder and Shahnaz fall in love and sing a song or two.
However, The lure of becoming a Queen makes Shahnaz to reach the palace. Bulbul and Hyder follow her. The crooked Vazir recognises Hyder as the king and captures him. Then he tells Shahnaz if she wants Hyder alive, she should poison Kamal at the marriage ceremony.
In the ceremony Shahnaz and Bulbul put the poison in vazir’s glass, but the cunning Vazir changes his glass with Kamal and Kamal dies.
Meanwhile King Hyder is rescued by his loyal knights and a big fight ensues between the supportes of vazir and Hyder. In this Hyder kills the vazir.
Hyder becomes the king again and makes Shahnaz his Queen.
