Hi All
Today is a special day in the life of Mr. perfect Khan…. I mean Amir Khan. He turns a year older. It was exactly 25 years ago that he burst into filmdom with the song which I intend to discuss today. Come to think of it the other 2 Khans – Shahrukh and Salman– also complete 25 years in Bollywood.
The song under discussion brought fame to the singer—Udit Narayan. Anand Milind (Old-timer Chitragupt’s sons), the music directors were not newcomers in the exact meaning of the word but they also benefitted from this movie. This was Mansoor Khan’s directorial debut. He ably carried forward his father- Nasir Hussain’s legacy of making entertaining films. QSQT- as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak used to be referred to by the young generation- was followed by Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar, Akele Hum Akele Tum , Josh etc. we also see a debutant Raj Zutshi and Ajit’s (loin) son (on the cymbals).
QSQT was a Romeo Juliet inspired tale with lots of good sounding songs. The star crossed couple are from warring families of Rajputs. The bad blood between the family dates back to the time when the couple were kids or infants, but fate decides to bring them together, fall in love, run away from home etc, and the usual stuff. That means that this movie was an old story retold very well with good acting and more importantly songs.
So in the song under our scanner we have the Rajput college of Delhi having a farewell party for their outgoing seniors. (In 2000s this party is called graduation party which even pre school kids enjoy when they pass out from Kindergarten to Primary. How times change and nomenclatures change). In his speech preceding the song Amir thanks his Juniors talks of how everyone would have decided what to do after stepping out of college and how he is the good obedient son of his “Papa”. Those were times when 2nd year students used to host our farewell parties. I remember that when this song was a hit at all farewells. Infact it played at my farewell too. And mind it there used to be no dress codes or demand to parents for new clothes shoes etc. as is the case these days. My Peevesie and her brother are already worried if she will find the right sari or dress or outfit (as the case may be) for their forthcoming Graduation Party or Farewell party as we knew it. And that reminded me of this song and how she is bothered about what to do after coming out of college.
Here is the song.
Song-Papa kehte hain bada naam karega( Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak)(1988) Singer-Udit Narayan, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Anand Milind

Lyrics
Papa kehte hain bada naam karega
beta humaara aisa kaam karega
magar yeh toh koi na jaane
ke meri manzil hai kahaan
Papa kehte hain bada naam karega
beta humaara aisa kaam karega
magar yeh toh koi na jaane
ke meri manzil hai kahaan
Papa kehte hain bada naam karega aa
baithhe hain milke sab yaar apne
sab ke dilon main armaan yeh hai
baithhe hain milke sab yaar apne
sab ke dilon main armaan yeh hai ae ae
woh zindagi mein kal kya banega
har ik nazar ka sapna yeh hain ae ae
koi engineer ka kaam karega
business mein koi apna naam karega
magar yeh toh koi na jaane
ke meri manzil hai kahaan
Papa kehte hain bada naam karega aa
mera toh sapna hai ek chehra
dekhe jo usko jhoome bahaar
mera toh sapna hai ek chehra
dekhe jo usko jhoome bahaar
gaalon mein khilti kaliyon ka mausam
aankhon mein jaaddoo hothon mein pyaar
banda yeh khoobsoorat kaam karega
dil ki duniya mein apna naam karega
meri nazar se dekho toh yaaron
ke meri manzil hai kahaan
Papa kehte hain bada naam karega aa

See Amir khan’s than wife at 4.50 in red dress and again with Amir at 5.02 onwards when he is singing ‘gaalon mien khilti kaliyon ka mausam…” .
This is Majrooh Sultanpuri reinventing college romance in 88 to 90’s. The music was as fresh as the treatment of the same old theme.

Amir Khan’s wife’s name is Reena.
I thinks we found Alka Yagnik also with the films songs. Before that we were trapped in the ‘lal dupatta mulmal ka….’ etc. being hammered on the ears.
‘ gazab ka hai din socho zara ‘ and ‘aye mere hamsafar ‘ (with the clock music start) were my favourites.
