Jab pyaar kiya to darna kyaa parody

Posted on: March 19, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

MUGHAL-E-AZAM-1960 was a milestone movie in the annals of Hindi films. Almost all the songs of this movie became famous and popular too. Many stories floated around about the happenings during the making of the film. Long articles appeared in papers and even a few books were published on this Epic film. Even today-after 53 years- the songs of Mughal e Azam are heard with interest by young and old alike.

No wonder then that some of the songs became the subject of Parody songs. The easiest song for this was ‘Jab pyar kiya to darna kya’, sung by Lata and filmed on the beautiful Madhubala. Few songs did crop up as its parody.

We will see two such songs from different films, with a gap in between. Today’s song is from the film RAATON KA RAJA-1970

1970 was an year when the Golden Era of HFM was coming to a close,nay-it had closed !

A new crop of actors, directors and composers were emerging. Use of heavy orchestra in place of Melody was becoming the order of the day and Shanker Jaikishen were the leaders in this.

Actors like Amitabh Bachhan were just emerging as the new stars. Rajesh Khanna had emerged as reigning superstar. Actors like Vinod Khanna and Shatrughna Sinha were yet to come out of their Villain’s garb and start as Heroes.

The period of 70 was also the time when several Graduates of Film Institute were trying desperately to carve their own niche in the industry. Comedians like Johnny Walker and Agha were waning and new comedians like Mehmood were getting noticed clearly.

In such a situation, a young handsome fresh FTII Graduate entered the film Industry. His first film as a Hero was ‘Raaton ka Raja”-70.His Heroine was someone called VAISHALI-who was never heard again. The storyline of the film was on the hot topic of those days-smugglers and Traitors.

The name of the actor was Dheeraj kumar. Not much information is available about him before he came in films, except that he came from Punjab. After few faceless films as Hero, he shifted to side roles. He did about 50 Hindi and 20 Punjabi films. He was an actor Director and a Producer too.

In 1995 he changed his focus on television, establishing his new production company CREATIVE EYE LTD. He became its Chairman and Managing Director. He produced TV serials in many languages like Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati etc. In some serials he acted also.

Overall, he was a successful businessman. His name was embroiled in some controversies like, his wife being duped for 2.5 crores by a Tantrik from Vasai and his relations with actress VIMI and their ‘so called’ love child who became a famous Indian cricketer and a Captain. All these stories were the staple for Tabloids, so no one knows how much credibility they have.

The film ‘Raaton ka Raja’-70 was a production of Rang Lok Productions. The Music Director was R D Burman and 6 out of 7 songs were written by Majrooh. The sole Parody song was written by Rajesh Nahata and NOT Majrooh.

The cast of the film was Dheeraj, Vaishali,Jayashree T , Gajanan Jahagirdar, Shatrughna Sinha, Rajendranath etc.

The story of the film was-

A gang of Smugglers, traitors and Anachists is hiding in a place called Chhappan Hill, where no one knows how to go. It is headed by a Boss. They need money and decide to steal an antique from the Archeological reserves. It is a statue of ANARKALI, which can fetch crores of Rupees in the International market.
This statue is kept with Thakur Harman Singh who has arranged tight security for it.

Only Raja can steal this.

Raja is an expert thief. Growing up as an orphan he becomes a thief but spends all ill-gotten money on needy people-a la Robin Hood style !

Raja is contacted by Neena, who works for the Gang, because her father is in their custody. Raja is offered a hugh amount for this theft.
Raja gets a doubt and makes enquiries. He does not want to help Traitors. He steals the statue but taking Thakur in confidence returns it to him. He had asked his sculptor friend De Souza to make a duplicate. This he hands over to the Gang. The Boss however realises that this is a duplicate statue.

The Boss kidnaps Aneeta, the daughter of Thakur and blackmails him for the statue.

Thakur gives the original statue, but he is also kept in custody where he meets Neena’s father.

Now Anita is also forced to work for the gang.

Anita, Neeta, Raja and De Souza hatch a plan with the Police and not only secure the priceless antique statue of Anarkali, but the whole gang is also arrested.

There was hardly any novelty in the story or spectacular scenes, so the film found its waterloo soon. Heroine Vaishali disappeared after this film from films. The music was also not very catchy. The RDB touch was missing in the music of this movie.

Let us see and enjoy the Parody song- jab pyar kiya to darna kya……

Heroine Vaishali was the younger sister of Dancer Madhumati & she made her debut, earlier in V. Shantaram’s ‘Boond jo ban gayee moti’.

Arunji,
Thanks for the parody song. Never heard it before so listened/watched carefully and enjoyed it a lot. 🙂
Quick question- when a MD uses the tunes of different composers to make this kind of parody songs, do they have to take permissions from all these composers? (copy right issue) If yes, then what if he is not alive?
Thanks.

khyati ji,

I had once asked this question to Chitragupta, whom I knew thru one of close friends.
His answer was that since the lyrics are different,it is not considered as the same original song’s copy or it’s theft. There was no infringement of any copyright in this.

This must be the only song where Shamshad Begam is singing for R.D.Burman.

The missing words sound like :

‘Biwi parast’ ko aag lagaa di

‘Biwi parast ‘ – Someone devoted to his wife, biwi ki pooja karne waala.
