Mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is the Rafi-Asha duet recorded for Neela Akash(1965) but not used in the movie. It is a shame that such a song could not find place in the movie and was relegated to anonymity. Some might say that the other songs used in the film were better than this so this was edged out. But I do not agree.

Compared to other poets of the time writing film songs, like Majrooh, Hasrat, Shailendra, Rajendra Krishan, Kaifi Azmi, Saahir etc. I feel Raja Mehdi Ali Khan’s lyrics a little lacking in imagination and not enhancing the composition of Madan Mohan. I felt this way about the songs of ‘Woh Kaun thhi’ too.

Though those songs are among the classics of Madan Mohan, I feel the lyrics are a weak factor in them. This is solely my own opinion(AND THE CHANNEL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MY VIEWS). 🙂

For me, usually the first impression is the last impression and it takes a lot to change an opinion once formed. But here the songs of this film have made me reconsider my opinion that Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was not able to hold his own among his contemporaries. The song under discussion ‘mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee yeh haseen nigaah kabhi kabhi ‘ is a factor in this change of heart. It is a beautiful composition and sung also with the right feelings.

I think Madan Mohan may have used the tune again for another song. This is reminding me of a song from Teen Deviyaan (1965). Really the tune is very similar in both the songs. That song is a S D Burman-Majrooh-Rafi masterpiece ghazal, now that I have heard it again , the resemblence is overwhelming.

And the common link between these two songs, I suspect, is Jaidev who used to assist both Madan Mohan and S D Burman. No no, I am not implying anything, but just thinking aloud. Even Rafi is a common factor for both songs. And both Teen Deviyaan and Neela Akash are from 1965. Actually I found another similar tune re-used from a song in ‘Dr. Vidya'(1962) (song post is with Atulji, yet to be posted) to a song in ‘Kaise Kahoon’ (1964). I have just now seen Arunkumar Deshmukh Sir’s post in Pamir Harvey’s blog titled “ek dil do jaane-ek tune do gaane”. These two instances from Dr. Vidya to Kaise Kahoon and Teen Deviyaan-Neela Akash, are not finding a mention there.

Song-Mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee (Neela Aakash)(1965) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee
yeh haseen nigaah kabhi kabhi
mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee
aji haan nazar ne kiyaa to hai
yeh haseen gunaah kabhi kabhi

mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee

yeh nazar ki bijliyaan toot ke
kahin le gayeen hamen loot ke
yeh nazar ki bijliyaan toot ke
kahin le gayeen hamen loot ke
karen kyaa ke apni khushi se bhi
huye ham tabaah kabhi kabhi
aji haan nazar ne kiyaa to hai
yeh haseen gunaah kabhi kabhi

mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee

tu hai saamne to qaraar hai
teri berukhi se bhi pyaar hai
tu hai saamne to qaraar hai
teri berukhi se bhi pyaar hai
jab bhi roothh roothh ke rok lee
teri ham ne raah kabhi kabhi

mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee

tujhe dekh loon main qareeb se
tujhe maang loon main naseeb se
tujhe dekh loon main qareeb se
tujhe maang loon main naseeb se
teri shokh zulf ke saaye mein
jo mile panaah kabhi kabhi
aji haan nazar ne kiyaa to hai
yeh haseen gunaah kabhi kabhi

mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee
yeh haseen nigaah kabhi kabhi
mere dil se aa ke lipat gayee

This song is just one more incepid and unduly long composition…senseless words. Several such songs mark Madan Mohan’s invariably picturized on boring events…I rate him far below Kalyanji Anandji, Ravi, Chitragupt RD Burman…forget about the top composers like Naushad, CRamchandra, Anil Vishvas… Madan Mohan will be remembered, nevertheless, for Dekh Kabira Roya, Adalat and some very few music compositions.

nahm ji,

This is what I found recently about this above song.-

This romantic duet by Rafi Sahib and Ashaji was originally recorded in 1965 for the film NEELA AAKASH (which also had the popular duet “Aapko Pyar Chhupane Ki”). Reportedly, the makers felt they needed a lighter duet, lyrically and musically, and thus this song was rejected after being recorded and a new duet was recorded which also became a big hit… “Tere Paas Aake Mera Waqt Guzar Jaata Hai”.

Rafi Sahib and Ashaji sang all the 3 duets, and all were penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.
