Jhoomo re jhoomne ke din aaye

Posted on: April 6, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

” All men are created equal, but some are more equal” wrote British author George Orwell,in his famous book ” The Animal Farm”. His prophetic words proved especially true about conditions in India post Independence. It is an open secret that Nepotism, or helping your friends/relatives with posts or preferences which they may not deserve is a common practice in India.

But STOP, it is not restricted to Politicians alone in India. Be it Business, profession or Politics, Nepotism is accepted-though not approved-as a routine thing in India.

Why should the Film Industry lag behind in this ? No way !

Right from Zubeida, the Heroine of India’s First Talkie “Aalam Ara”, till today’s younger lot in films, the industry is full of Nepotism. All of Zubeida’s sisters became actress after her. Jaddanbai and Nargis, her two brothers, Waheedan Bai-Jyoti-Nimmi,p Prithwiraj Kapoor’s entire khandaan, Dev Anand, Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Anil kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Salim Khan and his clan, Ramprasad-Pyarelal-Ganesh and other brothers, Roshan, Chitragupta, Lata etc etc …the list is very long.

In the early years of Films, relatives were welcome because the industry was new and it needed artists at any cost, but later on it became a regular practice.

NOT all actors or composers were/are like that. Many of them joined films without any Godfather or relative and made it to the Top also. YES,ofcourse, but still a major chunk of B and C grade actors survived in this industry because of their well known connections.

There are cases where films were produced only to launch son/Daughter or wife into films. Kidar Sharma tried with Ashok, producer Joglekar tried with Meera, Dev Anand with Suneil, Kishor Sahu with Naina etc etc…..

Even in olden times, W Z Ahmed established Shalimar Films to Launch wife Neena(ex housewife of Mohsin Abdulla-Ahmed’s employee) and producer/Director Adarsh Lok made films to float wife Jaymala.

Jaymala was a small time actress. Her first film was “Hazar Pariyan”-59. After marriage with Adarsh Lok, she debuted as a Heroine in FASHIONABLE WIFE-1959. She had a double role in this film. Then she continued with Adarsh Lok’s films as a Heroine only. Some of her films were, Ramudada, Durga pooja, Harshchandra Taramati, Love and Murder, Spy in Rome, Rambha Haran, Balak, Sampoorna Teerth Yatra, Veer Arjun, Babruwahan, Aaj ka ye Ghar etc. She was last seen in ” Private Life “-1983 as a Heroine and producer.

FASHIONABLE WIFE-1959 was produced and directed by Adarsh Lok, the Music Director were the duo of Suresh-Talwar ( Assistant Johnny Gomes) and the lyricist was Bharat Vyas. Story,Screenplay and Dialogues were by Waheed Qureshi. The cast was Jaymala, Abhi Bhattacharya, Anup Kumar, Leela Mishra, Iftekar, Nazir Hussain, Achala Sachdev, Radha Kishen, Manorama etc.

Girdhari and Susheela were a couple who contineously fought over only one point-how to bring their twin daughters. Susheela wanted them to be traditional and Girdhari was keen on making them ultra modern” to face the new World’. finally the couple separate with Ragini opting for the traditiona Mother and Kamini staying with her Modern Papa.

Ragini marries Balraj(Abhi Bhattacharya) and she is very happy. However her Mother in law(Leela Mishra) is not happy with her and there are daily fights, culminating in Ragini leaving her house and doing social work independently.

Kamini marries Natwar(Anup Kumar), her Dance trainer and happily lives with him, enjoying life. She has no time for any household responsibilities. She spends quite a lot, arranging frequent parties. Due to all this her young devar Raju runs away from the house and Natwar is also fed up with her.

In short both the girls have a spoiled family life.

There is comic relief in the form of Manorama and Radha Kishen, who are the neighbours.

After mant twists, coincidences and meaningless happenings, the girls learn their lessons. The film tries to stress that Tradional ways are always better, but they also must mix a little modernity in keeping with the times.

At the end Girdhari and Susheela unite,so do Kamini-Natwar and Balraj and Ragini.

Here is a song from this film, showing one of the parties Kamini has thrown as per her philosophy of eat, live, be happy and be merry. This song is filmed on Jaymala and Anup kumar with others.
