Hum pe daya rakhna hey daata

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

There are two types of films, for which sure shot captive audience are readily available anytime. They are-
1. Religious or mythological films and

2. Tear jerkers or films depicting extreme pitiable conditions of women, like, for example- Aurat teri yehi kahani, Bhabhi or bhabhi ki choodiyan etc.

Some producers play smart and combine the two types of movies, like Jai Santoshi Maa or Krishna Sudama or Solah Somvar Vrat etc.

Usually the titles of films are a give away of its genre, like ” Khooni Khanjar” is usually a “C” grade action film, Raaj Tilak will be a costume drama, Faulad is a He-Man film, Desh ke Dushman will be a smuggler story, or Pyar kiye jaa will be a light comedy/love story and film titles having words like Bhai, Behan,Maa, Bhabhi, Devar and such other relations, are surely family dramas of the Type 2 films, as described above.

This is a universal reality that while most people like sweet things, there are some people who like to eat KARELAs (Bitter Gourds) also. Nothing against them if they want to eat KARELA , I have no objection at all. Similarly there are people who like to pay to weep, that too in the Theatres. No problem. It is mostly women, middle aged, aged and not so aged are the chief constituents of this type of audience.

As long as the Titles are self explanatory and revealing, there is no problem, but when the title is misleading or neutral like this film AAS-53, the unsuspecting film-goer is caught in the ” No Entry” zone, with the clever havaldar appearing from behind a tree triumphantly and looking at you menacingly !

In all such films, the scenes around in the theatre are more interesting than what is going on on the screen ! Hundreds of moist eyed women cursing the cruel mother in law or the wily Nanad-all at one time in full agreement, together with sobs etc, creates a different atmosphere altogether !!

(These days, however, such films are not made and that type of audience has disintegrated into different smaller types).

Anyway, I had seen this film and wondered what made me do that. Here is its story for you in a nutshell-

AAS-1953 was a Goel cine production film, produced and directed by Devendra Goel who wrote the screenplay also.

it was a typical tear jerker of the extreme kind, but surprisingly with excellent songs by Shankar Jaikishan, who were in their ascending zone then. There is one more lilting duet by Talat and Lata ‘ Chahe naina churaao chahe daaman bachao pyar ho ke rahega’ in this film.

Ashok(Shekhar), a wealthy person has a motherless child Kishore. He gets Asha(Kamini Kaushal) as his governess. In due course they fall in love and get married. Asha loves Kishore very much. After few months, Asha is pregnant and she duly begets a son. Inspite of having her own son, Asha loves Kishore more.

Ashok’s Chachi(Laxmi) and her attendant Chanda(Chandabai) hate Asha and start troubling her. They also put many allegations on her like theft, adultery etc. Meanwhile Kishoe(master Ramesh) disappears and Chachi alleges that Asha must have killed him. Asha is thrown out of the house.

Asha is very sad. Her son is sick. Masterjee(Omprakash) who is Kishore’s teacher and Ashok trace kidnapped Kishore, rescue him and bring him back, but he falls seriously ill chanting only Asha’s name. Doctors warn that if Asha is not brought back, Kishore may die. Masterjee and Ashok search for Asha. Her son is on death bed, but hearing about Kishore, she rushes to his bedside. In few days,Kishore gets well, but Asha’s son dies.

Ashok learns all about the black deeds of Chachi and Chanda, throws them out of the house and continues happily with Asha and Kishore.

Today, let us see the film’s last song to be posted here. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Kamini Kaushal and a kid playing Kishore. Shailendra is the lyricist.
