VACHAN -1955 was one of those films called ” Social “, but in effect it was a film about the heartbreak of a girl and her misfortunes, how her dreams are shattered and she suffers. Hearing this story, I dared not visit the Theatre where this film was screened.
Produced by Devendra Goel and Directed by Raj Rishi, VACHAN was a Landmark movie of 1955, because it heralded the arrival of a Composer, who was very mild, cool and Hard working. Luck had decided to give him work two-hands-full for next 30 years. The name was Ravi- RAVI SHANKAR SHARMA.
In the initial struggling period, Ravi had seen bad days, real bad bad days, when he had to sleep anywhere, wear anything and eat nothing, because he could spend only 8 annas per day-which was spent in transport alone.
The turning point came when he got a chance to sing in a chorus song of Anandmath-1952. Hemant Kumar’s first film as a Music Director. In the rehearsals, Ravi found that Hemant kumar was pronouncing an Urdu word wrongly-being a Bengali, may be-. Ravi was a very humble person, but he gathered courage and told Hemant da about it. Hemant da was duly impressed and he offered him an assistant’s job with him.
Ravi worked with Hemant kumar for a long time. Initially he was getting 20 rupees per song and 2 rupees per rehearsal. Later, when Hemant da started working for Filmistan on 1500/- per month salary, Ravi got 200 rs. salary, plus 200 rs. per film, from Hemant Kumar.
One day Hemant Kumar called him and said,” I think you are wasting your years with me here. You can become a Music Director yourself. I am removing you from today, otherwise you will not do it.”.
Luckily, next day Devendra Goel met him and offered him Vachan as a Music Director. After a few years, Ravi came to know that it was Hemantda who had sent Goel to him.
Ravi never forgot this help in his lifetime.
Ravi was a very accommodating and humble person. Perhaps his initial bad days had taught him this. He compromised with his choices and opinions, when it came to a pressure situation. When Ravi started working for B R Films, he had to tolerate the haughty, proud and rough Sahir Ludhianavi-a darling of the Chopras.
Later, when during Dharmaputra, B R Chopra had a dispute with Ravi Rafi over the qawwali, he replaced Rafi with Mahendra Kapoor. Though Ravi did not like Mahendra Kapoor, he gave best songs to him and Asha. It was not in his blood to oppose producers or Directors.
When he worked in free atmosphere, he churned out his best songs.
Ravi was very fond of singing and writing Lyrics. He did not sing much, but wrote about 50 songs in 31 films in which he was the Music Director. His first hit song from film Vachan- ‘ Chandamama door ke” was written by him. By the way, the interlude music between the Mukhda and Antara of this song was used by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in their Hit song-” Ek do teen..” from Tezab, shot on Madhuri Dixit.
Even when Ravi was an established composer, he had no place to do rehearsals. He used to go to Juhu Beach in the singer’s car and practice on the beach. Rafi and Ravi were spotted, with a harmonium ,on the Beach many times by the fans.
Rafi was Ravi’s favourite. In one interview Ravi said, ” Rafi was very sentimental. While rehearsing the song,” Babul ki duwayen leti jaa’ from Neelkamal, Rafi started crying. I was worried, but he told me that his daughter was engaged the earlier day only and this song reminded him of her Bidai ! Even at the time of recording the song also, Rafi was sentimental and cried.”
Ravi lived a contented life. After 1986, he realised that Bombay has stopped needing him. One day, singer Hariharan and Malyali Lyricist M T Vasudevan called on him and took him to Madras next day to meet a prdoducer of a Malyali film. Ravi prepared 5 tunes of a song-which he never understood what it meant- and the producer liked all the 5 songs. Thus started his South sojourn. Ravi composed music for 17 Malyalam films and won many awards too. he used “Ravi Bombay” or ‘ Bombay Ravi ” as his name there.
At the fag end of his life, his daughter in law-Varsha Usgaonkar,a Hindi and Marathi Film actress, and his son Ajay, dragged him to court for some property dispute.
Ravi died on 7-3-2012.
Today we will hear a very old and wonderful song from film Ghar Sansar-1958,sung by Asha Bhosale- Bhabhi kare appeal aur phir devar bane vakeel from GHar Sansaar (1958)
Film Ghar Sansar was a Social picture from Pushpa Pictures, produced by A A Nadiadwala and directed by V M Vyas. The cast was Balraj Sahni, Nargis, Rajendra Kumar, Kumkum ,Shammi, Johnny Walker etc. It was the usual tear jerker story of Bhabhi- Uma (Nargis) and Devar Deepak (Rajendra Kumar) and their love. Bhabhi does everything for the Devar to help him complete his education ,get a job etc. But after marriage to Jyoti (Kumkum), he insults his Bhabhi and Bhaiya Kailash(Balraj Sahni) and throws them out of their house etc etc.
I do not know why Ravi had such types of films always for composition. Anyway, the songs of this film are very good. Four Lilting songsfrom this movie are already posted on the Blog. here is the 5th one. Enjoy….

As usual, a superb write-up, Arunji.
Very informative and in a style which makes you feel that you are there at the time.
Ravi was another of those composers, I think, who didn’t get his full due though he composed so many hit songs. Even iconic songs. Some people have the feeling that Ravi’s music lacked variety – I don’t agree. He could – and did – compose a wide variety of songs, from slow songs to bhajans to qawwalis to rock-n-roll type songs. And of course the usual outdoor melody songs (which were many in the 60s).
I remember seeing an interview with him sometime in the mid-90s on TV. He said something like “Ho sakta hai ki industry mein mera utna naam na ho, magar aaj bhi kisi bhikari go gaate dekhenge, to mera hi gaana gayega. Jaise ki “gareebon ki suno, wo tumhari sunega”, “de daata ke naam, tujhko Allah rakhe”, “aulad waalon phoolo phalo”, “.
When, later in life, he moved from Bombay towards South India, he also used to do concerts in Sri Lanka. And became quite popular there.
One question, Arunji: In the write-up, you say BR Chopra had a disagreement with Ravi during Dharmaputra. Is that a typing mistake? Was that meant to be Rafi? Ravi wasn’t the composer for Dharmaputra, it was N Dutta. So I presume you meant Rafi?

Was that ‘Mere Dilbar Mujhse Khafa Na Ho’?
By way it was one of the best qawwalis I have ever listened.
N Datta and Rafi gave some fabolous songs.

Great writeup. Ravi (Ravishankar Sharma) was one of our best music directors. His music for Hindi film Narsi Bhagat 1957 was so popular that on every forum the songs were played. If it is true that his own kith & kin took him to court for property matters it is truly a matter of shame.
