Dhoom dhadakka dhoom dhadakka

Posted on: May 10, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular conributor to this blog.

If you go through the list of films made from 1931 to 1970, you will find that it was a mixture of the following Genres-

1. Fantasy/Costume

2. Religious/Mytological/Devotional

3. Social/Love/Tragedy/Comedy/Family Drama

4. Historical

5. Action

6. Mystery and

7. Musicals

Now, if you consider the film going audience in the year 1970 as belonging to the age group of 20 to 60,then they were born between 1910 to 1950.

Have you ever realised that the type of film Genre has shrunk considerably for the period 1970 to 2010 ?

It now consists only of –

1.Love stories

2. Action films and

3. Musical Comedy

(forget the occasional and obscure films)

For films made between 1970 to 2010, its audience would be those people who were born between 1950 to 1990.

What could be the reason for the reduction of film genres in this period (1970 to 2010) ?

Simple !

Most people from the audience of 1970 had seen Kings and Queens. The social structure had an emphasis on traditional mind set and values for these people (born between 1910 to 1950). The school books consisted of Historical and Mythological stories. The habit of reading books of variety was existing, giving rise to interest in Action, mystery, Fantasy and costume films. People could relate to these stories !

For the generation born between 1950 to 1990, the entire social structure and education system had undergone basic changes. They had never seen any Kings or Queens, nor were the books or the reading habits same as was the case with the earlier group. So this audience could never relate themselves to old time themes. As per the rule of Demand and Supply, the type of film genres also changed (shrinked).

Only the other day, after reading the Lyrics of Bhala tha kitna apna Bachpan, one of our regular commentators, Mr. P Seshadri had asked a question- ” how many things from this song, will the present children connect with ?”

My reply to him was as following-

Na ped na paudhe,na gudda guddi ka khel
Na Raja Rani ki kahani,na isme koi mel
Ye sab baten purani,na in ka koi mol
Video game kitne achhe, yehi hai sabke bol
Tum apni yaden rakho apne paas
humko nahi issme interest koi khas
Aaj ki karo Baten, purane khayal Bhoolo
Khao,Piyo,mazey karo,khushiyon mein tum jhoolo !

Because I belong to the audience of 1970 (born between 1910 to 1950 ), obviously I used to like to see all types of films(except tragedies), particularly the Dharmik, Costume, Action and musicals.

Chandamama-in 13 Languages- was providing us Mythological, Religious, fantasy, historical and Social stories.

The stories in today’s Tinkle and similar magazines are as per today’s generation’s liking.

Anyway, today we will enjoy a nice dance song from a costume film AMBER-1952. Amber was a Jagat pictures film, produced by Seth Jagat narayan and Madanlal Mehrotra. It was directed by Jayant Desai.

JAYANT DESAI was a veteran of over 70 films in all. he was born in Surat on 28-2-1908 and started from the silent films era. His first film as a director was Pahadi Kanya-1930. He directed 12 silent films. His first Talkie film was Do Badmash-1932. He worked with Ranjit studio for a long time.he was also a story and s/play writer. He produced one film Zaban-1943.His last film as a director was Zamana Badal Gaya -1961. He died on 19-4-1976.

Film Amber’s music was by Ghulam Mohammad. His assistant was his younger brother Ibrahim (who later became a Music Director himself). The story was by Dwarka Khosla and Babubhai Shukla. The lyrics were by Shakeel Badayuni.

The story was…

Amber (Nargis) was the daughter of a Prince who had married a Tribal girl secretly. Someone murdered him and her mother committed suicide. She wanted to take revenge. Her Nana, a Tribal Chief, sent her to the King as an orphan. She grew up in palace as the King’s darling princess.

One day she finds out that it was the king who had killed her father and now she wanted to kill the father-like King.

Once, during an outing, she meets Raj ( Raj Kapoor), a bandit and son of a loyal old sardar of the king(B M Vyas). They fall in love. Raj is sent to palace to protect the king as there was a rumour that a tribal girl is planning to kill the king. Now the lovers have opposing goals, without each other’s knowledge.

The Diwanji (Ramesh Sinha) and his son Johar (Nayampalli) want to kill the king and usurp the kingdom. When Amber goes to kill the king, she finds Diwan ji there. she is arrested and imprisoned with king for execution. Raj discovers that entire story and realises that Diwan ji has killed the prince. Raj collects his army and attacke the palace, killing diwan ji and rescuing King and Amber.

Raj and Amber unite and king makes Raj the new Diwan ji.

Here is an interesting song from the movie. It is a song about playing cards, where various cards come up and introduce themselves with major cards (King and Ace) having a showdown with each other , both staking claims over the queen of the cards.

Though only the names of Rafi and Shamshad Begam appear in the list of singers, it has at least another two or three male playback singers in it that have not been identified. This includes the singer who sings for Raj Kapoor later in the song. This is an extremely long song nearly nine minutes long. Shakeel Badayuni whom one does not normally associate with such light hearted stuff is the lyricist. Likewise, the music director is Ghulam Mohammad, normally remembered for serious compositions.

Thank you Arunji for the write-up and info. I think Jayant Desai made Miss Mala also, one with Kishore Kumar. One fine day i decided to watch it with high hopes, and although i have a lot of patience with all types of actors and movies, just couldnt finish that movie!

There are many factors besides ones u mentioned.

Lack of quality music is number 1. Good music made junk movies bearable too, be it Ranjan’s sword fighting or Dara Singh’s wrestling. Now that music factor is gone.

Globalization is number 2. Before people didnt have a choice, now u can watch good fantasy movies, like The Lord of The Rings trilogy for example, which has made billions of dollars worldwide.

Lack of creativity is another factor. Indians are lazy and copycats and kept trying formula movies for a long, long time. But they lack imagination. Saif Ali Khan is introducing the Zombie genre today with Go Goa Gone, hollywood used to do that in 1920s!

TV serials is another factor. Ramanand Sagar, B R Chopra, etc, with their Ramayan, Mahabharat, Krishna, etc has milked these genre so much on tv, that people dont have to go and watch these on the big screen, so when Jeetendra makes Luv Kush (1997), it flops!

Lack of effort/cheapness is another issue. There is so much emphasis and leg work on pre-production in movies like LOTR that i just mentioned, to make the characters of Tolkien alive, the hobbits, elves, etc, while for us, Shahrukh Khan makes Ashoka based on a thesis of some PhD student!

Star factor is another issue these days. There is so much repetition of same genre, that people dont accept their stars in such movies, Ashoka (Shahrukh), Bhagat Singh (Devgan), Mangal Pandey (Aamir Khan), Eklavya (Saif Khan), Veer (Salman Khan), etc. And thats why some of the ventures dont even take off, for example, Santoshi trying to make Prithviraj chauhan with Sunny Deol, Ajaj Devgan, etc for a decade; Bhansali with his Bajirao Mastani project, Salman Khan with his Ramayana project, etc.

Acting is also one issue. All these above mentioned Khans rule bollywood, but cant act, and lack the physique/towering personality/dialogue delivery/screen presence, etc. required for such movies; something which Vinod Khanna was able to display in his Rana character in Hema Malini’s Meera. So we have an issue with the lead character himself, while earlier even the supporting cast would be stellar, for example, Ajit, Nigar Sultana, Durga Khote, Murad, Kumaar, etc for Mughal-E-Azam.
