Panchhi aur pardesi donon nahin kisi ke meet

Posted on: May 31, 2013

“Veena” (1948) was a Jagat Pictures Production movie. It was directed by J P Advani. The movie had Rehman, Hemavati, Veera, Sulochana Chatterji, Leela Misra, Yakub, Girdhari etc in it.

Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, has to say about the story of this movie:-

The story was about a vagabond Poet-Madan whose parents were dead and his Daadi Maa wanted him to marry a “susheel ladki” Veena. He only believes in love, hence goes away to another village and falls in love with Ratna, the villege belle, whose brother Mangaloo is a cheat but Madan befriends him. He reforms Mangloo who loves Myna.

The love blooms in Ratna and Madan when his Daadima is on death bed and calls Madan. Just before dying Daadi maa marries Madan off with Veena. Madan does not accept her. The film depicts how Veena wins Madan’s love.

Today (31 may 2013) is the tenth death anniversary of Anil Biswas (7 july 1914-31 may 2003). On this occasion, here is a song from “Veena” (1948). This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. This philosophical song is written by Pt Narendra Sharma.

Incidentally this was the last time that Pt Narendra Sharma and Anil Biswas worked together in a movie.

This by now forgotten song was quite a popular song during its time. I have read an article where it is mentioned that getting the music of this song played at his funeral was the last wish of a prisoner sentenced to death and his wish was fulfilled too. Now whenever I think of this song, I will remember this tale.

Song-Panchhi aur pardesi donon nahin kisi ke meet (Veena)(1948) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Pt Narendra Sharma, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

panchhi aur pardesi
panchhi aur pardesi
donon nahin kisi ke meet
panchhi aur pardesi
panchhi aur pardesi

jaise nain se nikla aansoo
phir na nain samaaye
jaise nain se nikla aasu
phir na nain samaaye
waise hi pardesi saajan
jaakar laut na aaye
waise hi pardesi saajan
jakar laut na aaye
birha ki ro ro ke jaaye
birha ki ro ke jaaye
saari umariya beet
panchhi aur pardesi
panchhi aur pardesi
donon nahin kisi ke meet
panchhi aur pardesi

man churaaye aankh churaaye
aag lagaaye aur na bujhaaye
aag lagaaye aur na bujhaaye
premi ke nainon mein bas kar
phir na nain milaaye
premi ke nainon mein bas kar
phir na nain milaaye
apna bairi aap bane wo
apna bairi aap bane wo
karega inse preet
panchhi aur pardesi
panchhi aur pardesi
donon nahin kisi ke meet
panchhi aur pardesi
panchhi aur pardesi

Dear Atul,

As per myswar.com and also from the PDF list of songs composed by Anil Biswas in gitaayan Sarveykshan, this song is written by Swami Ramanand. Pandit Narendra Sharma wrote 4 songs in ‘Veena’ (1948). This film was not his last association with Anil Biswas. He wrote one song each in ‘Badi Bahu’ (1950) and ‘Mahatma Kabir’ (1954) for Anil Biswas.

I have read somewhere in the internet (not able to recall the article) that when Anil Biswas joined Bombay Talkies in 1943, he wanted Dr Safdar ‘Aah’ Sitapuri, the poet-lyricist with whom he was associated with during his days in National Studios, in the payroll of Bombay Talkies. But Bombay Talkies had already its full quota of lyricists which included Pandit Narendra Sharma and Kavi Pradeep. So Anil Biswas tried to discourage Dr Narendra Sharma by rejecting his lyrics and asking him to rewrite those lyrics umpteen times. He thought that in this way, Pandit Narendra Sharma would leave Bombay Talkies and he could replace him with Dr Safdar ‘Aah’ Sitapuri. Unaware of this plan, instead of getting discouraged, Dr Narendra Sharma rewrote the lyrics many times and resubmitted to Anil Biswas. He had no choice but to accept the revised lyrics. Pandit Narendra Sharma remained with Bombay Talkies. It was only when Anil Biswas became a ‘freelance’ music director, he gave opportunity to Dr Safdar ‘Aah’ Sitapuri to write lyrics for him.

By the way, this incidence was told to Pandit Narendra Sharma by none other than Anil Biswas himself! What a great man to admit his wrongdoing.
