Dil ne chheda hai taraana

Posted on: July 1, 2013

“Sipah salar” (1956) is a lesser known movie by now whose prints are no longer available by now. Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved in house encyclopaedia, has to say about this movie:

SIPAH SALAR-1956 was an Eagle films, Bombay presentation by its owner F.C.Mehra. The film was directed by Mohd. Hussain and music was by IQBAL.
This was quite an entertaining costume drama wherein Shammi Kapoor donned Cowboy dress for a major part of the film. Unfortunately all the prints of this film were destroyed in a fire and today, the film is not available anywhere. Shammi Kapoor always regretted that he did not keep a copy of this film with him.
Sometime back in feb-2012, there was a discussion about this film on our Memsaab’s blog and there, I had given a synopsis of the film,as I had seen this film and made notes,as usual. Here is the excerpt-

I have seen the film Sipahsalaar(which roughly means commander in chief or Senapati). Since I find that many people are curious about this film, based on my notes I give herewith a short synopsis of the film. If you are unable to see the film, atleast here is some information about it.

It was an Eagle films presentation, produced by F.C.Mehra and directed by Mohd. Hussain who also wrote its story, screenplay and dialogues as well. Music was by Iqbal with lyrics from Faruk kaiser.

The evil Vazir of Bharatpur(Randhir) ousts the good king(Kamal Mehra) and captures the throne. The good but helpless king escapes to another country. However his loyal, trustworthy and brave Sipahsalaar(S.Nazir) goes underground and continues guerilla fighting with the Vazir.

The king wants to send a plan to recapture his kingdom to his Sipahsalaar. For this purpose he chooses a Captain(Shammi Kapoor). He is ready to undertake this dangerous mission. Disguised as a Truck Driver, the Captain starts his journey, but is recognised and stopped by a major(Shyam Kumar) at the border. At this time a mysterious, beautiful patriot girl(Nadira) saves him and both escape in the jungle.

Hereafter the film depicts many adventures, jungle scenes and moments of love between Shammi Kapoor and Nadira, including some songs.

They finally reach sipahsalaar, etc etc.

Here is a song from the movie. It is a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Talat Mehmood. Farooque Kaiser is the lyricist. Music is composed by Iqbal (not Iqbal Qureshi).

Here are the details about Iqbal, courtesy Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh:

While Iqbal(or Chhota Iqbal-as he was known then)started his career with Malika Saloni-1953 and ended with C.I.D.Agent 302-1963; the more well known Iqbal Qureshi started with Panchayat-1960 and ended career with Hukmarana-1998.

IQBAL was essentially a stunt film composer. He gave music to 21 released and 2 unreleased films. His films are-Malika Saloni-53, Jadugar, Jasoos, Sakhi Lutera, Anokha Jungle, Sipah Salar-56, Gypsy, Chetak aur Rana Pratap, Black Mailer, Hero no.1-59, Toofani Tirandaz, Wrong number, Diler Haseena, Gun Fight, Jalim Jaadugar, Night bird, Toofani Tarzan, Kala jaadu, Black Arrow, Fauladi Mukka and CID Agent 302-1963.

Iqbal Qureshi was anyday a more successful composer with films like Love in Shimla, Panchayat, Bindiya, Banarasi Thug, Cha Cha Cha, Kawwali ki raat etc.

It is very unfortunate that due to name similarity such composers are not much known and do not get the credit for their work. Many Internet sites make this mistake.

Only the audio of this song is available. It seems certain that the song was picturised on Nadira and Shammi Kapoor.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

dil ne chheda hai taraana
jab se dekha aapko
dil ne chheda hai taraana
jab se dekha aapko
aa gaya hai muskuraana
jab se dekha aapko
aa gaya hai muskuraana
jab se dekha aapko

dil ne chheda hai taraana

aap ki ulfat ka jaadu
apni nazron ka bharam
aap ki ulfat ka jaadu
apni nazron ka bharam
ho gaya mushkil chhupaana
jab se dekha aapko
dil ne chheda hai taraana

munh chhupaaye phir raha hai
aasmaan par chaand bhi
munh chhupaaye phir raha hai
aasmaan par chaand bhi
bhool baithha jagmagaana
jab se dekha aapko

dil ne chheda hai taraana

kal talak hum phir rahe thhe
thokaren khaate huye

kal talak hum phir rahe thhe
thokaren khaate huye
milg ayaa dil ko thhikaana
jab se dekha aapko
dil ne chheda hai taraana
