Blog Day :

4751 Post No. : 16489

Eid ul Azha mubarak ho, to all friends and readers.

It is generally believed that faith and logic are two different things.  What is faith?  Basic premise of faith would be the belief in God.  The conviction that there is a Supreme Power who holds the strings of all things in the universe.  After all the world is a stage and we all are actors.  Shakespeare said it, but it is nothing but the truth.  All of us are here for a set number of days, playing our designated roles, doing things we are destined to do, amassing good deeds and bad deeds.  As we complete the life circle and leave this mortal world, the soul does go somewhere, where else it will go but to the creator?  Logic has no option but to agree that the creator is in best position to answer the question, what is the purpose of creation?  If there was no creator, nothing makes sense in the whole existence. Science can give answers till a certain point and that is that. Logic starts where science gives up.   And sound logic points to God, the Creator, the Sustainer, the one who says “be” and it is.

I quote here some of the verses from the Glorious Quran.

“O Mankind, indeed we have created you male and female, and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you, in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, ALLAH is (all) knowing and (well) acquainted.” –  49:13

“And (O Muhommad) say: My Lord forgive and have mercy, for you are the best of all who show mercy.” –  23:118

“O mankind, there has come to you, a convincing proof (Prophet Muhammad) from your Lord and we send down to you a manifest light (this Quran).” – 4:174

“And whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] himself.” – 27:92

“And for those who fear Allah, He will make their path easy.” – 65:4

“Allah never changes the condition of people until they change what is in themselves.” – 13:11

“And put thy trust in Allah. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.” – 33:3

“Take care of your souls.” – 5:105

“Do not ridicule others, perhaps they may be better than you.” – 49:11

“If you are thankful, I will increase my blessings upon you.” – 14:7

“So remember me, I will remember you.” – 2:152

“He knows what is in every heart.” – 67:13

“Verily, with every hardship comes ease.” –  94:5

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.” – 2:286

“Do not lose hope, nor be sad, for you will overcome them, if you are among the believers.” – 3:139

“We will test you in fear, hunger, loss of wealth life & fruit, but give glad tiding to the patient (steadfast).” – 2:155

“Call upon me, I will respond to you.” – 40:60

“Indeed, Allah is with those who abide him and those who are doers of good.” -16:128

“Allah will provide for him from a quarter from where he had no expectation. And whosoever puts all his trust in Allah, He will be enough for him. Allah is in command and he has set a measure for all things.” –  65:3

“And worship your Lord until there comes into you the certainty/inevitable (death)” – 15:99

“You prefer the life of this world. Although the hereafter is better & more lasting.” 87:16-17

“And we have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars.” – 67:5

“The Pharoah’s wife said (Pray) My lord, build for me near you a house in paradise.” –  66:11

These ‘Aayaat’ are part of different Surah (Chapters) in the Quran, revealed at different times to the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) (570-632 CE), during his Prophethood years (610-632 CE).  Mohammed (PBUH) was unlettered with no formal education, and had rarely traveled outside of Makkah, before his migration (Hijraah) to Madinah.   All ‘Aayaat’ of the Holy Quran were revealed to him, via the Angel Jibraeel (AS) at different times and in context of different situations. They were delivered as signs and guidance. These ‘Aayaat’ were then related by the Prophet (PBUH) to his companions (Sahaba), who recorded them in writing.  All of these ‘Aayaat’ were recorded in the Prophet’s life time. It was collated/arranged in a meticulous way, in the form of different Surah’s of the Quran during the reign of Hazrat Abu-Bakr (RA) (573-634 CE), the first Khalifa, in the present compilation. Hazrat Umar (RA) had a great contribution in this process.  There is great detail available about how the procedure was done, with verification of at least 2 witnesses that the Aayat is indeed written down in the presence of the Prophet.  Different Surah’s are also classified as ‘Makkih’ and ‘Madnih’, those revealed before migration to Madinah and after.

How simple and easy, is the faith and the true path, can be discerned in these quotes. How wise is the counsel, for all situations? It answers some of the basic questions bothering the mankind, with intellectuals, philosophers, thinkers having scratched their heads for all these millennia.  I have tried to collate them in an order, so it is in the order of creation, faith, trust, thankfulness, the true way of living, easy way of functioning as a creation, hope, the hereafter, the quest for heaven, how it is near and then the last one speaks of the wife of one (Pharoah-who denied the existence of Allah and declared himself as God) can ask (pray) for the highest level in Jannah (Paradise). It means, its available for everyone, one only has to seek it and ask for it, whatever and whoever you are.  This may not be the best way of saying it, and if I have erred, may Allah (SWT) forgive me.

A brief definition of Jannah with a prayer:

Jannah, where there will be no sickness, no pain, no difficulty, no separation, no loss.

Jannah, its beauty such that no mind could even ever comprehend.

Jannah, where those you love are waiting for you.

Jannah, where your Allah is waiting for you.

Jannah, which is never ever going to end.

Remind yourself that this is the decree of Allah and in his decisions is hidden kindness. Remind yourself that it is not just going to be okay, but it is going to be worth it.

Dear heart, please just remind yourself that your Allah is with you. Please don’t ever forget that.

Your Allah is with you. Your Allah will never leave you.

He knows of your condition. He is aware of your struggle.

And not a single moment of this going by unrewarded.

Allah knows that you are scared, and it is okay to be scared.

Keep trusting your Allah. Don’t lose hope in His mercy.  He is right here with you.

Feel it and treasure it.

On a different note, this is what Allama Iqbal has to say:

Sajdon ke ee’waz firdaus mile ye baat mujhe manzoor nahi
Be-laus i’baadat karta hoon banda hoon tera mazdoor nahi

Ee’waz or I’waz means in return of, and ‘Firdaus’ is Jannat/heaven/paradise in persian.

What Iqbal means is :

I am not doing salutations / ibaadat (supplication) and itaa’at (obedience / submission to the will of Almighty), so that you grant me heaven in return. My prayers are pure, as I am your slave and not a paid servant.

This is, but the highest point of devotion, that the pious seek.

One of those pious, righteous, seekers of the divine favour, was Umar Farooq (RA) (584-644 CE). Umar bin Khattab was the second Khalifa of the Khulfa-e-Rashideen. The status of Umar Farooq, as a Sahaba, companions of the Prophet (PBUH), as among the beloved and respected Khalifa, can be ascertained from the fact of his being one of the “Ashra Mubashra”.  “Ashra Mubashra” are the 10 exalted ones among the Sahaba, who were given the ‘Good News’ or ‘Glad Tidings’.  What would be the ‘Good News’ who have the clear idea of the purpose of creation, life and death?  It is the achievement of securing a place in ‘Jannah’.  So, by divine declaration, those 10 were given the Good News, that a place is secured in Jannah for them. The magnificent ten include all four Khulfa-e-Rashideen.  Umar Farooq (RA)’s significance as a Khalifa and his role in the spread of Islamic empire much beyond the Arabian Peninsula is indisputable and incomparable.  One more significant and important contribution of Umar Farooq (RA), is the introduction of Islamic calendar i.e. the Hijri calendar.  There is a great deal to learn from his story, for he was one of the major detractors of the Prophet for a long time.  But once he accepted that Mohammed is indeed the Messenger of Allah, and came into the fold of Islam, blessed by the Allah (SWT) and rose to great heights that he did.

I have read up a lot in recent days, so that I could give some accurate and concise information in this post.  But if I go on, this post will never finish.

So, I will move to the song, which is a non-film song sung by Mukesh. The song is composed by Iqbal and lyricist is Shadaab Minai.  Shadaab Minai is probably making a debut here with this song.  The song is talking in detail of an incident i.e. a qissa during the reign of Umar Farooq (RA), the second Khalifa.

Tally of music director, lyricist and singer in the blog so far as follows:

Iqbal

23

Shaadaab

2

Mukesh

797

932

Unless the Shadaab in the stats page is the same as Shadaab Minai, otherwise this is the first song written by Shadaab Minai in the blog.

This is a rare song, which I think few people may have heard before.  I was not aware it until a few months ago, when it was shared by someone on WhatsApp.

Song – Hai Bahut Mashoor Ye Qissa Umar Farooq Ka (Mukesh – NFS) (1970), Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Shadaab Minai, MD – Iqbal

Lyrics

hai bahot mash-hoor ye qissa
Umar Farooq ka
aaj bhi duniyaa mein hai
charcha Umar Farooq ka

jab khilaafat ka sharf
haasil hua Farooq ko
momino ki fikr rehti thhi sadaa Farooq ko
kaam aate thhe har ek
majboor ke Hazrat Umar
shauq se karte thhe khud
har ek ki khidmat Umar

phirte phirte ek din
pahunche Umar ek ghar ke paas
dekhte kya hain
wahan baithhi hai ek aurat udaas
degchi chulhe pe thhi aur
ro rahe thhe us ke laal
jab kiya Hazrat Umar ne ja ke
aurat se sawaal
ro rahe hain kis liye bachche
yeh kya hai maajra
bhook se rote hain ye bachche
ye aurat ne kaha
bole Hazrat degchi mein
pak raha hai kya kaho
kis liye ghamgheen ho
jo kuchh bhi hai dukhda kaho

boli wo aurat ke paani se bhari hai degchi
kyun ke main bachchon ko behlaati hoon
is soorat se hi
uff taraste hain ye bachhche daane daane ke liye
kuchh nahi hai mere paas in ko khilaane ke liye
teesre din ka hai faqaa
mere bachchon par huzoor
mera koyi bhi yahaan wali nahin
nazdeek-o-dur
roye uss ko dekh kar iss haal mein
Hazrat Umar
aa gaye fauran hi bait-ul-maal mein Hazrat Umar
aata kapda ghee chhuaare aur raqam le kar Umar
ghamzada aurat ke ghar ki simt daude jaldtar
peetth par dekha Umar ke bojh to bola ghulaam
bojh uttha kar mujh ko chalne deejiye aye nek naam
ye Umar bole agar ye bojh main de doon tujhe ea

ham gariboon ki Umar koyi khabar rakhte nahin
a’iysh mein hain mast dukhiyon par nazar rakhte nahin
le ke dukhiya ki baaton ka asar Hazrat Umar
khaamoshi se laut aaye apne ghar Hazrat Umar

subah us aurat ko Faarooq ne bulwa liya
aur wazifa us ka bait-ul-maal se jaari kiyaa
ho ke sharminda phir Umar ne aurat se kaha
dukh bahot pahunchaa hai tum ko
meri ghaflat se sada
tum mujhe kar do mu’aaf
itni hai meri iltejaa aa
tum jo mujh ko bakhsh do
bakhsh de mujh ko khudaa aa

saari duniyaa mein hai charcha
har kahin Farooq ka
koyi bhi insaaf mein
saani nahi Farooq ka
koyi bhi insaaf mein
saani nahi Farooq ka

This blog regularly clocks centuries of songs. So it follows that the blog clocks thousand songs too after every ten centuries.

The blog has seen 15 instances of thousandth posts so far.

These were special occasions when special writeups are presented with special songs.

It is interesting to look back at the 15 instances of thousandth posts in the blog. Here are their details:-

We can see from the above that there has been at least one Thousandth song post every year from 2009 onwards. 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 saw two such posts, which means that the blog added nearly 2000 songs in these years.

All these songs were very very special songs in one way or the other. Some songs were iconic songs, some extremely rare, while some were popular in their times but had been forgotten with passage of time.

Some of these posts combined other major blog landmarks. For instance song post number 3000, a popular song, was Lata Mangeshkar’s 1000th post in the blog. Song post number 4000 , a popular songwas Rafi’s 1000th. 6000th post, a non film song was Asha Bhonsle’s 1000th post in the blog.

The 5000th song post, recognised Bulo C Rani, the less known music director of this iconic qawwaali, who completed his century in the blog with this song.

In the earlier days of the blog, regulars would eagerly look forward to the thousandth post and would try to guess the song. In some cases, for instance the 5000th post, people successfully guessed the song because we were posting far too many Bulo C Rani compositions in the blog those days to take him to his hundredth song in the blog. 🙂

Who could forget the leadup to the ten thousandth song in the blog ! Regulars, on those pre whatsapp days were keeping in touch with each other on e mail, sharing messages like, one more song posted, three to go. What song it is going to be, etc. The excitement, the eager anticipation, and finally the song getting posted, and the comments on the song post- those were heady days for the blog. Those who were part of those exciting days still fondly remember those days.

One can notice that the thousandth posts have been coming relatively slowly ever since. Song post 11000 took 254 days, whereas the next thousandth posts took over 300 days each to materialise.

Song post 15000 was the slowest. It took 444 days.

What about song post 16000 ? This gets posted today. It has taken 555 days !

444, 555. Such honky tonk numbers inadvertently and unnoticeably creep into the affairs of the blog. Who can forget the concidences involved while posting the “1” songs- viz song post numbers 1, 11, 111, 1111 and 11111 ! Those who have forgotten about the amazing coincidences noticed are requested to go though this article.

Another thing noticeable about these writeups is that they are penned by pillars of the blog, such as Raja, Sudhir Jee etc. Some of these writeups have been joint efforts, involving upto three contributors. Sudhir Jee’s contribution extends beyond the article writing. He would also dig up the song for the occasion, often a rare not yet on internet gem and upload that specially for the occasion. For instance, the 10000th song post was a song of 1931 (the earlist year for HFM) and it was especially uploaded by him minutes before that post was published on 20 July 2014 !

Selection of the song has been a matter of much speculation among the regulars of the blog, as discussed above. While some of these songs have been correctly guessed by them, guessing them has become difficult of late. That is because the person writing the article (that is often me) is not sure what song to pick. I myself manage to land an appropriate song often at the last moment. For example, I accidentally discovered the song for song post number 13000 and posted it for that occasion. When I was myself not clear about the song, how were others going to guess the song ! That way I feel like legendary leg spinner B S Chandrashekhar. He himself did not know what ball he was going to deliver next, so how was it possible for the batsman to anticipate his next delivery ! 🙂

In our whatsapp group of regulars, some of them have been guessing the song that would be the 16000th song for the blog. One guess is that it would be a Lata Mangeshkar song, alongwith her career records. That did not happen.

I was actually toying with such an idea. But then I realised that the songs that I could use with such an idea did not seem suited for an occasion like the 16000th song for the blog.

Just when it seemed that I was unable to find a suitable song, I stumbled upon this song which is being presented today. This song was discovered by me almost like how I discovered the 13000th song post song.

This song is as rare as they can be, from a movie that can be as rare as they come. The movie is “Toofaani Teerandaaz”(1959). The movie, a “stunt” movie, is produced and directed by A R Zameendaar for Navshakti Films, Bombay. The movie had Shanta Kumari, Deep Kumar, Tuntun, Sheikh, Habeeb, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Ismail Azad, Sajjan, Goldstein, Daya Devi, Nazeer Kashmiri, Amir Ali, Sattar, Md Ali, Ghani, Azam, Haneef, Yunus, Nawab, Funtoosh, Baby Shahjahaan, Khan Habib, Khan Nusrat, Khan Atiq etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. The movie is yet to make its debut in the blog.

The songs are rare, but they have been made available online thanks to the generosity of some well known HFM music collectots and sharers.

The song under discussion is a qawwaali. It is sung by Ismail Azad qawwaal and Sudha Malhotra, accompanied by male and female chorus. In all great qawwaalis, it is the lyricist who makes the qawwaali great.Farooque Kaiser is the lyricist of this fantastic qawwaali. Music is composed by Iqbal.

Only the audio of thd song is available. My guess is that this song was picturised on Ismail Azad (singing for himself) and Shakila Bano Bhopali, with others in the standard qawwaali set up so common in Hindi movies those days.

The song is in the same league as many iconic qawwaalis of Hindi movies. It is just that this song failed to get popular and so remained under the radar. With time, the song was forgotten. Thanks to music collecter Shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma, and the uploader shri Aditya Pant, we can enjoy this fantastic fantastic qawwaali. Our thanks to them.

The song, a nearly seven minute feast, starts with a long harmonium piece, followed by an interesting war of words between the two genders. Quite a remarkable song that will grow on the listeners if they listen to it a few times. I know it because I got tolisten to it quite a few times while trying to get the lyrics right.

“Toofaani Teerandaaz”(1959) makes its debut in the blog with this song.

Another thousandth song post done ! I feel relieved and happy. It will be a while before I will have to worry about finding another suitable song for the occasion. 🙂

I take this opportunity to thank one and all. This set of thousand songs took 555 days to arrive at a rate of less that two songs per day, but what is important is that we are still on the move and we continue to add to an already rich collection of songs. I take this opportunity to thank one and all. I expect that we will continue to recive the same support, help, encouragement, contributions etc for one and all.

Song-Hum wafaadaar nahin tu bhi to dildaar nahin(Toofaani Teerandaaz)(1959) Singers-Ismail Azad, Sudha Malhotra, Lyrics-Farooque Kaiser, MD-Iqbal
Male chorus
Female chorus

Lyrics

Shukr kar hamne tujhe chaand si soorat de di
naaz kaliyon ka hawaaon ki nazaakat de di
teri zulfon ko ghataaon ki bhi rangat de di
loot kar saare zamaane ki muhabbat de di
phir bhi hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin

ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

ham na hote to bahaaron mein na rangat hoti
chaand mein noor na kaliyon mein nazaakat hoti
pad gayi jaan zamaane mein hamaare dam se
pyaar tum kisko jataate jo na aurat hoti
phir bhi hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

tujhko magroor kiya
keh ke haseena hamne
teri khaatir kiya
manzoor ye jeena hamne
banke majnu kahin laila pe huye hain qurbaan
cheer laaye pahaadon ka bhi seena hamne
phir bhi hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

chaahe joban bhi
tera hukm na taala hamne
daali Mirza ke gale pyaar ki maala hamne
isko kehte hain muhabbat yahi hoti hai wafa
khud to girte bhi rahe
tujhko sambhaala hamne
phir bhi hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin

ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

le sahaara meri baahon ka zara ab to sambhal
do kadam raah e wafa mein tu mere saath to chal
teri ulfat ki nishaani nahin jag mein koi
mard ke pyaar ka wo dekh nishaan Tajmahal
phir bhi hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

pahle mumtaz ne ki jaan muhabbat mein nisaar
baad mein Tajmahal ka hai banaana bekaar
waqt ne phoonk diye kitne wafaaon ke charaag
beh gaye mauj mein kitni hi kumhaaran ke pyaar
aise hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin

ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

zahar aankhon ka har ek jaam mein daala tumne
zulf ke parde mein hai saanp ko paala tumne
hashr(?) tak yaad rahega tera ye zulmo sitam
banke hawwa hamen jannat se nikaala tumne
phir bhi hamse ye gil hai ke wafaadaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

taane sakhiyon ke sune
hamne hi Radha banke
pyaar mein ho gaye ruswa kahin Laila ban ke
Ram ka saath diya kisne museebat mein bata
kaun jungalon mein phira saath mein Seeta ban ke
phir bhi hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin

ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin
ham wafaadaar nahin
tu bhi to dildaar nahin

jaa tere husn ka ab koi talabgaar nahin
dil hai aurat ka koi pyaar ka baazaar nahin
ham nahin ?? ke ab naaz uthhaane waale
aur aa jaayenge dil hampe lutaane waale
ham na honge to ye kya shaan rahegi baaqi
jaan jaayegi magar aan rahegi baaqi
kaun hai aap ki soorat se jo bedaar nahin
qatl kar denge tumhe haath mein talwaar nahin
?? naazuk mein ye taaqat meri sarkaar nahin
?? se nipatna koi dushwaar nahin
phir bhi hamse ye gila hai ke wafaadaar nahin

ham wo baazaar nahin tu bhi to dildaar nahin…

lagi hai aag jo dil mein
lagi hai aag jo dil mein

Mujhe fariyaad karne de
mujhe aansoo bahaane de

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

jigar ki chot dil ke daagh
ab main kisko dikhlaaun
main apne dard ki fariyaad
kiske paas le jaaun
dar o deewaar hi ko gham
ka afsaana sunaane de
lagi hai aag jo dil mein
lagi hai aag jo dil mein
arre zaalim bujhaane de
Mujhe fariyaad karne de
mujhe aansoo bahaane de

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

chaman ko loot kar
mujhpar jo fasle zulm dhaaye jaa
magar dil ek ka hai
doosre ka ho nahin sakta
muhobbat ke janaaze pe
mujhe maatam manaane de
lagi hai aag jo dil mein
lagi hai aag jo dil mein
arre zaalim bujhaane de
Mujhe fariyaad karne de
mujhe aansoo bahaane de

Missing Films of 1960s – 110
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Coming into the home stretch now. 110 films from 1960s added during this series. Some of them have been so rare that no information even is available about them. Like today’s film – ‘Black Arrow’ from 1965.

Geet Kosh, the major source of all information on Hindi films of those decades, provides us with the following details. The film is produced under the banner of Ameer Productions, Bombay, and is directed by Mehmood. It is not clear whether this is the same person as the comedian Mehmood that we are all so familiar with. The film is listed as a costume drama. The film poster that is available online indicates this film to be of the ‘zorro’ genre – a masked rider wearing a black cape and a black hat and riding a black horse – gives an impression of a zorro clone type film.

The star cast is listed as Hercules, Chandrakala, SK Shyam, Anjum, Funny Walker, Jilani, Hameeda Bano, Sadhana Khote, Khurshid Khan, Nazeer Kashmiri, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, and Jaani Babu qawwaal.

Geet Kosh lists four songs for this film. All the songs are written by Aziz Ghaazi. Now this name, although not new on the blog, does not have any information associated with it. We have four songs by this songwriter on the blog. In the Geet Kosh listings, I could locate 29 songs written him, for 9 films, from 1958 to 1969. Then, in our blog, his name appears again for a film in 1987 – ‘Tarzan And Cobra’. That makes 10 films that are known to have his name connected with. Almost all films that he has written for are stunt and costume drama films, as their names would suggest – ‘Jungle Princess’ (1958), ‘Choron Ki Baraat’ (1960), ‘Diler Haseena’ (1960), ‘Night Bird’ (1961), ‘Black Arrow’ (1965), ‘Noor Mahal’ (1965), ‘Tarzan And Hercules’ (1966), ‘Tarzarn Aur Jaadui Chiraagh’ (1966), ‘Sakhi Lutera’ (1969), and ‘Tarzan And Cobra’ (1987). So far this is all the information that I have been able to locate about this obscure songwriter.

The previous song written by Aziz Ghazi and posted on our blog, is a qawwaali in the voices of Mubarak Begum and Jaani Babu Qawwaal – “Adaayen Teer Hain Andaaz Barchhi Bhaale Hain” from the film ‘Jungle Princess’ (1958). And again today, we have another qawwaali sung by the same singers. As I have been surveying the landscape of 1960s films and songs, I realize that the qawwaali has been a very popular song type used in the films, all the way from mid 1950s to around end 1970s. So much that every third or fourth film, especially if it is a stunt type B/C grade film, contains a qawaali. Many of them are quite obscure, unavailable. And those which are available, are not much heard. Maybe because they belong to obscure films. But the qawwaalis, in themselves, are superb creations that have gone unnoticed and are lost to the listeners. It may be an idea to do another series of such unfamiliar qawwaalis from that era. (Aah. . . plans. . .) 😉

Let’s listen to this ‘nok jhonk’ qawaali, a very obscure and a rare song. This is the only song that is available for this film, in public domain. It appears that other songs were probably not released on gramophone records. Small mercies – that this one long qawwaali is now available.

Given the list of actors, my intuition says that this qawwaali is performed on screen by Shakeela Bano Bhopali, lip syncing for the back ground voice of Mubarak Begum, and Jaani Babu Qawwaal, singing for himself.

Another interesting point that comes to mind, as I listened to an prepare the lyrics. Per our earlier discussions, and Atul ji’s observations, a nok-jhonk type of song always ends in an agreement between the parties. In other words, it takes about three minutes for the jhagda to end and friendship to begin. This being a qawaali, the protagonists are taking longer to make their points. However the agreement is reached, albeit it arrives after six minutes. Oh well, it is a qawwaali after all. 🙂

Song – Jhoothe Ho Jhoothe Tum Ishq Waale  (Black Arrow) (1965) Singer – Mubarak Begum, Jaani Babu Qawwaal, Lyrics – Aziz Ghazi, MD – Iqbal
Mubarak Begum + Jaani Babu Qawwaal
Female Chorus
Male Chorus

Lyrics

nazar aate ho tum
bezaa..aar hum se. . .

na hoga ye kabhi
sarkaa..aar hum se. . .

jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale
dil tod daala hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala
jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale

aaj is ke ho to kal us ke baney shaidaai
jaante hi nahin tum waada nibhaana kya hai
jaaiye jaaiye in baaton mein rakha kya hai
haa aaa aaa aaa aaaa
tum se harjaai ki. . .
ulfat ka bharosa kya hai. . .
jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale
dil tod daala hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

tum ne har baat ko afsaana bana kar chhoda
jis ko chaaha us ko deewaana banaa kar chhoda
bijliyaan hosh pe hans hans ke giraane waale
dil ki duniya mein ho tum aag lagaane waale
aaaa aaaa aaaaa aaaaaaa
ek hum hi nahin. . .
kehte hain zamaane waale. . .
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

hum na hotey to zamaane mein andhera hota
dard ka ranj ka nafrat ka basera hota
husn se apne nazaaron ki sajaaya hum ne
pyaar kya hota hai ye tum ko bataaya hum ne
haa aaa aaa aaa aaaa
ishq mein mit gaye par lab na hilaaya hum ne. . .
jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale
dil tod daala hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala
jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale
dil tod daala hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

hum na hotey to ye shokhi na masti hoti
husn ki duniya pe hasrat hi barasti hoti
pyaar kar ke tumhen magroor banaaya hum ne
dilbari ka har ek andaz sikhaaya hum ne
haaaa aaaa aaaaa aaaaaaa
ishq ki raah mein
dil apna jalaaya hum ne. . .
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

pyaar ke naam pe tum mil ke daghaa detey ho
tum wafaadaari ki inaam sazaa detey ho
tum ne chhoda hai mohabbat mein sahaara de kar
tukde dil kar diya hai tum ne hamaara le kar
aaj to gusse mein sarkaar nazar aate ho
khich ke tum aur bhi talwaar nazar aate ho
maan letey hain chalo pyaar tumhaara sachchaa
aao mil jaao ye jhagda nahin hota achhaa
baat taqraar ki dekho na zabaan par laao
saaz e dil chhed ke ulfat ke taraane gaao

hum hain tumhaare
tum ho hamaare
dil ko mila hai sahaara
pyaar ka har taraf hai ujaala

Today (24 february 2019) is the 95th birth anniversary of Talat Mehmood (24 February 1924-9 May 1998).

Talat Mehmood sang some 450 songs in all which includes HFM as well as NF songs. This blog contains 377 of his songs. So we are only about 70 odd songs short of covering all Talat Mehmood songs in the blog.

Today, on this occasion, here is a non film song of Talat Mehmood. Like most NFS, this song too has superb lyrics which are penned by Jigar Muradabadi. The song is composed by Iqbal. The date of release in not known, and I have assumed it to be 1960.

This is a Talat Mehmood song that I heard for the first time only just now, when I realised that today was Talat Mehmood birth anniversary.

Lots of me to Ghazal singers came up on the scene in later decades, but it is Talat Mehmood was the original pioneer of this genre of songs. And it can safely be said that few other ghazal singers can cast a spell over their listeners as Talat Mehmood can. Here is this ghazal as a ready proof.

Song-Bekaif dil hai aur jiye ja raha hoon main(Talat Mehmood NFS)(1960) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Jigar Moradabadi, MD-Iqbal

Lyrics

Bekaif dil hai aur
jiye ja raha hoon main
Bekaif dil hai aur
jiye ja raha hoon main aen
khaali hai sheesha
aur piye jaa raha hoon main aen
khaali hai sheesha
aur piye jaa raha hoon main aen
Bekaif dil hai ae

majboori e kamaal e muhabbat to dekhna aa aa
majboori e kamaal e muhabbat to dekhna aa aa
jeena nahin qubool
jiye jaa raha hoon main aen
Bekaif dil hai ae

wo dil kahaan hai
abke jise pyaar keejiye ae ae
wo dil kahaan hai
abke jise pyaar keejiye ae ae
majbooriyaan hain
saath diye ja raha hoon main aen
Bekaif dil hai ae ae

pehle sharaab jist thhi
ab jist hai sharaab
pehle sharaab jist thhi
ab jist hai sharaab
koi pila raha hai
piye ja raha hoon main
Bekaif dil hai aur
jiye ja raha hoon main aen
Bekaif dil hai ae ae

“Sipahsaalaar”(1956) was produced by F C Mehra and directed by Mohammad Hussain for Eagle Films, Bombay. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Nadira, Shyam Kumar, Randheer, Kamal Mehra, S Nazeer, Samson, Kumkum, Helen, Cuckkoo, Jagdeesh Kamal, Amrit Rana, Rafiq, Ravikant, Kamal Mohan, Rajan Kapoor, Nazeer Kashmiri, Uma Dutt, Balaram, Sattar, Dhondhu, Habeeb etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it according to HFGK. But it seems that the sixth song (whose record number in not known) has the same lyrics and singers as fifth song, so these songs can be considered as one and the same. So effectively the movie had five songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fourth song from “Sipahsaalaar”(1956) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt. Farooque Kaiser is the lyricist. Muusic is composed by Iqbal.

Only the audio of this song is available. The song sounds like a dance song. Going by the sounds of it, this song could have been picturised on Cuckkoo, Kumkum or Helen. I request our kowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this lilting dance song.
