The Voice of Mukesh #26
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The next song in line for the year 1948 is from the film ‘Veena’. The film has a dozen lovely songs, all composed by Anil Biswas. For this film, Anil Biswas recorded three songs in the voice of Mukesh. One song from this film is already showcased here –“Wo Teekhi Nazron Se”. Here is the second Mukesh song from this film. The lyrics are written by Swami Ramanand.
The film is a production from Jagat Pictures, Bombay, produced and directed by JP Advani. The 12 songs of this film are penned by three poets – Prem Dehalvi, Narendra Sharma and Swami Ramanand. The star cast includes Sulochana Chatterjee, Veera, Rehman, Hemawati, Leela Mishra, Girdhari, Yakub.
In general, whenever we see a reference to Gokul or Vrindavan or the River Jamuna in a song, one can be assured that the song must be in some way related to the events and pastimes related to the stay of Lord Krishna on this earth. In any case, the first line of this song already refers to Gokul and that is further confirmation of this thought.
The song tells about the time when Krishna, at the age of 11, left Vrindavan to go to Mathura, to put an end to the tyrannical rule of Kamsa. Once He departed from Vrindavan, the chronicles of history tell us that He never returned again to Vrindavan. All His childhood friends, the gopis, the gwaal-baals, the cows and all other living entities in the Braj, waited for Him for He had promised to return ‘day after tomorrow’. This promised day never returned to their lives. The song tells of Radha ji, and how she has come to the banks of River Jamuna, seeking Him, perchance to espy an image or a shadow of Him – maybe He has come back. But no, He hasn’t. And the complaint that emerges is that He has forgotten Her.
Such a lovely song this one is. And it sounds even lovelier in the voice of Mukesh. Listen, and let it settle deep inside.

Lyrics
gokul ki ek naar chhabeeli
jamnaa t’at par aayee re
jamnaa t’at par aayee
gokul ki ek naar chhabeeli
jamnaa t’at par aayee re

meethe sur mein gaayee re
gokul ki ek naar chhabeeli
jamnaa t’at par aayee re
purvaiyyaa ne chhed ke saari
sar se kuchh sarkaayi re
purvaiyyaa ne chhed ke saari
sar se kuchh sarkaayi re
choti khul ke lehraayi hai
choti khul ke lehraayi hai
jyon naagan balkhaayee re
gokul ki ek naar chhabeeli
jamnaa t’at par aayee re
it ut dhoondhe apne pee ko
it ut dhoondhe apne pee ko
sudh budh kuchh bisraayee re
maano radhe prem ki moorat
maano
ae ji maano radhe prem ki moorat
bhoole krishna kanhaayi re
gokul ki ek naar chhabeeli
jamnaa t’at par aayee re
jamnaa t’at par aayee
