Hamse karega jo muqaabla

Posted on: September 4, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is the 8th song in the series, “Music Directors sing for other Music Directors “.

Here is an obscure song-“Hum se karega jo muqaabla” from an equally obscure film- Bhala Admi-1958, sung by an obscure composer singer- Bhushan and the Music Director is even more obscure- Nisar Bazmi.

This medley of obscurity may not evoke any interest in the minds of the younger generation, but the senior inquisitive readers may become curious to know more about this combination. Actually Hindi film industry is replete with such obscure songs.

OK, let us start with the obscure singer- Composer and singer- BHUSHAN. His real name, according to one source, was Brij Bhushan Sahni.(There was yet another composer Brij Bhushan in the 7os, mostly doing B R Ishara films, but he was different). Bhushan was actually from a very rich Jaagirdar family of Punjab. I had written about this Bhushan on 24-12-2012,in the series,”Unknown composers”. Here is a synopsis about him for ready reference here-

BHUSHAN was born on 15-11-1933, at village Bhon in erstwhile Punjab(which is in Pakistan now), in a jahagirdar’s house. Being rich they had Gramophone and bhushan grew listening to the songs of films of that era.

After Partition his family shifted to Lucknow and Bhushan started learning music. When young he also started sining on AIR-Lucknow. He wanted to become a film singer, which was resented by his family, as it was ‘below their Dignity’.

However Bhushan came down to Bombay and started looking for opportunities for singing in Films. He faced a real hard time. Sometimes he would get a chance in chorus singing. Ultimately he got a few songs in films like Oonchi Haveli, Baghi Sardar, Badal aur Bijli, Bhala Aadmi, Murad etc. But his future as a singer did not look very bright despite singing with Sabita Bannerji, Sudha Malhotra, Babul, Suman Kalyanpur etc. He took up a job as assistant to C Ramchandra.
One day he happened to meet Kidar Sharma. Kidar ji appreciated his talent and gave him his first break as a music director in MAIKHAN-67. He really gave very good songs in this film. Rafi sang a wonderful Gazal in it. Songs became popular, but Bhushan did not get any films. His second and last film as a Music director was PURANI PEHCHAN-1971.

It is a matter of regret that talented and hard working artists do not get opportunities. Bhushan could not get any further as a Music Director. He worked as an Assistant to Ravindra Jain, till last.

Now another obscure personality in this medley- Nisar Bazmi or Syed Nisar Ahmed. He was born in Naseerabad in Khandesh area of Maharashtra in 1925. His family was very conservative and no one in his family was connected with music in any way but still, Nisar was keen to learn Music. He took training under learned ustads and soon became popular for singing songs in functions etc. At the age of 14 itself he was employed by All India Radio, where within an year he composed some songs for a Radio play which became Hits,in those days. No wonder a producer was attracted and Nisar was offered a film for music direction. The film was ‘Jamna Paar-1946’.

Slowly he earned name for himself and composed music for 40 films till 1958. Only 27 of these films were completed and released. Unfortunately he always got C grade stunt films and never ever was considered for better films. Some of his films were Jaib katra, Dagabaz Dost, Khoj, Hamari Kismet,Hulla gulla, Adamkhor, Fighting queen, Bhala Admi etc.

He had composed a very melodious song for film Khoj, which was to be sung by Rafi. Nisar had only 50 rupees to give to Rafi for this song. Rafi, however ,liked the song so much that to encourage him gentleman Mohd. Rafi took only ONE Rupee from him as his fees and sang the song !

Nisar’s last film in India was ” Mr. Toofan” which was released in 1963.

He will be known for giving FIRST opportunity to Lyricist Anand Bakshi in his film, Bhala Aadmi-1958, in which Anand Bakshi wrote 5 out of total 10 songs. Later Anand Bakshi went on to become the most prolific Lyricist of Hindi films, with 600 films and over 4000 songs to his credit. He wrote in 300 films where Laxmikant Pyarelal gave music.( Though, Bakshi himself concedes that Bhala Aadmi-58 was his debut film, another Lyricist Naqsh lyallpuri pointed out that one song was written by Bakshi in film ‘Silver King-1957’. He should know, because Naqsh was also one of the Lyricists of that film.)

In 1962, Nisar went to Pakistan to look for better prospects. He was offered a film, “Aisa bhi hota hai”, by Fazli brothers-who were very active in India in the pre-partition days. Noor jehan was to sing in that film. Once Bazmi started working on that film, the news spread all around and at the time of his first recording, many Composers, who were active in India earlier, before partition, like Khwaja Khurshid Anwar, Rasheed Atre, Master Inayat Hussain etc attended the recording session. In his first song itself, he took 19 Retakes with Noorjahan for one song. Noorjahan was very happy, for she was reminded of her India days, when senior composers used to put stress on Rehearsals and retakes for perfection !

Nisar Bazmi-who was merely a C grade composer in India, soon became an A grade composer in Pakistan and gave music in more than 60 films. He won Nigar awards six times, besides citation from Pakistan Government too. In his last few years, he concentrated onlearning the whole Holy Quran, as he wanted to become a Hafiz.

Nisar Baxmi died in Lahore on 22-3-2007.

Let us now listen to the song which had a medley of obsurity. The film Bhala Aadmi was a stunt film made and directed by Master Bhagwan, who was an expert in this genre.

Song- Humse karega jo muqaabla (Bhala Aadmi)(1958) Singers-Bhushan, Sudha Malhotra, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Nisaar Bazmi
Male chorus
Female chorus

Lyrics

Humse karega jo muqaabla
pachhtaana padega ji
bhaag jaana padega

humse karega jo muqaabla
paas aana padega ji
dil milaana padega
humse karega jo muqaabla

jaane bhi do
bas ab rehne bhi do
sheikhi saari yeh dhari reh jaayegi
lagte hi ek teer jigar pe
in kadmon mein sar jhukaana padega

humse karega jo muqaabla
paas aana padega ji
dil milaana padega
humse karega jo muqaabla

de do dil bachna hai muskil
kachche dhaage mein bandhi chali aaogi
pyaar ka jaadu chalte hi gori
dil ko hamin se milaana padega
humse karega jo muqaabla
pachhtaana padega ji
bhaag jana padega
humse karega jo muqaabla

door hato
apni hadd mein raho
humse uljhe to akad nikal jaayegi
laakh dikhaao yeh shaan apni
aakhir tumhen haar jaana padega

humse karega jo muqaabla
Paas aana padega ji
dil milaana padega
hamse karega jo muqaabla

maaf karo
jhagda saaf karo
tum hi jeete
chalo ji humhin haare
rakha kya hai is roothne mein
ab to tumhe maan jaana padega
humse karega jo muqaabla
pachhtaana padega ji
bhaag jaana padega

humse karega jo muqaabla
paas aana padega ji
dil milaana padega

humse karega jo muqaabla

Excellent information both on Bhushan and Nisaar Bazmi. Yes, Maikhana had nice songs and the one in Khoj by Rafi Saab, Chanda ka dil toot gaya hai was also superb. Pity both these diamonds did not have chance to shine more. Thanks Arunji.
