Jab tak ham hain ham hi ham hain

We reach the alphabet ‘J’ in the series. I had actually finalised a duet song for this alphabet. The lyrics were all ready, but than I just thought to check what are the options for the rest of the alphabets. I made a list of appealing and interesting songs for them. But it occurred to me that none of those songs I had shortlisted were Shammi Kapoor songs. Now this would be unthinkable, no song of Shammi Kapoor vintage in the series will render it incomplete.
So I set about finding a Shammi Kapoor song to include. That is when I stumbled upon this song from the film ‘Pyar kiya to darna kya’ (1963). By this time I was getting frustrated, because most of the Shammi Kapoor film I was looking up in the list of songs moviewise were in red letters. There were some other options available, but they were meagre and I wanted a typical Shammi-Rafi sahab song to post here. Thus, I am switching to this song from “Pyar kiya to darna kya”.
Ravi, the creator of many iconic songs of hindi films, is the music director and lyrics are by Shakeel Badayuni. Among the many iconic songs, there are some Rafi sahab solos which should be written in Golden letters, if ever the history of hindi film music is recorded. These are songs like :
bhala karne waale bhalaayi kiye jaa,
chaudhvin ka chaand ho,
Husn waale tera jawaab nahin ,
Baar baar dekho hazaar baar dekho,
Ye waadiyaan ye fizaayen bula rahin hai tumhe,
Sau baar janam lenge,
Ham bhi agar bachche hote,
Na jhatko zulf se paani,
Chhoo lene do naazuk hothon ko,
Bhari duniya mein aakhir dil ko samjhaane kahaan jaayen,
raha gardishon mein hardam,
Us mulk ki sarhad ki nigahbaan hain aankhen,
tumhaari nazar kyun khafa ho gayi,
Baabul ki duaayen deti jaa,
O nanhe se farishte,
Door rehkar na karo baat,
Matlab nikal gaya hai to.
Not that all of these can be the golden songs, but I am compelled to mention them for bringing about the versatility of both Rafi sahab and Ravi.
As for the association of Rafi sahab with Shammi Kapoor, it is such that the songs list to feature in Golden letters will be at least three times larger. Shammi Kapoor had gone on record that ‘there would be no Shammi Kapoor without Mohammed Rafi’. It was not at all high praise, no more and no less than the just acknowledgement of the singer’s role in the artist’s career.
So here is the song which is an example of the sheer chemistry and mutual enjoyment of singing and performing of the two artist’s. This song is also a ‘car song’ ‘ picnic song’, ‘bragging song’, ‘dancing on the bonnet song’ and what not. Shammi Kapoor is seen dancing on the bonnet of not one but two cars. And I am wondering how come I never heard this song on radio. I heard and saw it for the first time today.

duniyaa ham se darti

duniyaa ham se darti
taaj hamaara neel gagan hai
takht hamaara dharti
hamin hain apne
dil ke maalik
kaun bhala roke

ham mastaane is duniyaa ki
dhukhti rag pehchaanen
ho ham mastaane is duniyaa ki
dhukhti rag pehchaanen
phoolon mein ham basne waale
kaanton ko na maanen
hansi bhi apni
khushi bhi apni
ham nahin jaanen
hotaa hai gham kya
hoaa
jab tak ham hain
ham hi ham hain
koyi nahin duniya mein
apne siwaa
jab tak ham hain
ham hi ham hain
koyi nahin duniya mein
apne siwaa
o babaa you you you
o babaa yaa yaa yaa
o babaa you you you
o babaa yaa yaa yaa
ek nazar ham jis par daalen
geet hamaare gaaye
hey ek nazar ham jis par daalen
geet hamaare gaaye
ham dil se jis ko bhi chaahen
wo apna ban jaaye
pyaar ka jaadoo
jis pe chalaa den
mile nahin ussko
khud apnaa pataa
haan haan
jab tak ham hain
ham hi ham hain
koyi nahin duniya mein
apne siwaa
apni jawaani hai
apna zamaana hai
phir hamen kyun ho
kisi ki parwaah
eeyeaah
jab tak ham hain
ham hi ham hain
koyi nahin duniya mein
apne siwaa
jab tak ham hain
ham hi ham hain
koyi nahin duniya mein
apne siwaa
o babaa you you you
o babaa yaa yaa yaa
o babaa you you you
o babaa yaa yaa yaa
o babaa you you you
o babaa yaa yaa yaa
o babaa you you you
o babaa yaa yaa yaa

“Jai Govinda Gopala” from Narsi Bhagat 1957 is a great bhajan written by G S Nepali, where Rafi saab and Ravi teamed up
