The Voice of Mukesh #37
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Ah haa, another lovely ghazal, this time from a lesser known film from 1949. The film is ‘Nazaare’, from the renowned banner of Ranjeet Movietone. The film is directed by Prahlad Dutt. A reading of the star cast indicates this would be one of those assembly line outputs of Ranjeet. The star cast includes Shashikala, Agha, Satish, Shanti Madhok, Khan, Anwari, Ramesh Thakur, Ram Avtar, Rajendra. The poet for the lyrics is identified as Rajinder Krishan, and the music is from the baton of Bulo C Rani. The film has sixteen songs in all, and a bit surprising that Bulo C Rani thought of using Mukesh for only one song in this film.
Any song rendered by Mukesh, somehow automatically becomes endearing. This is a lovely ghazal of love, reaching out to the beloved and expressing the emotions for meeting, for seeing, for being seen. The humility of the lover presenting himself at the feet of beloved, and entreating his innocence – ah yes, it is always the heart that is at fault in these matters. 🙂
hans ke zaraa to boliye, dekhiye na garoor se
Maybe someone will tell her
That I have come to her alley
Please, do not glare at me
With such aloof disdain
Oh please, let there be
A smile, a word for me
kadmon mein aa chuke hain hum, wo bhi to kuchh karen karam
achhaa nahin hai roothnaa dekhiye beqasoor se
I am at her feet now
Maybe, I will merit
A gentle kindness
I plead my innocence
Oh please, do not be offended
Ah, there is no faith, no trust
In the heart of one
To whom my heart is given over
Oh please, ask and tell me
What may convince her (of my love)
hum to qareeb aa gaye, wo naa qareeb aa sakey
I feel so near to her
But I know
She feels distant about me
Ah, those glances of mortal calamity
As she notices me
From a reserved remoteness
