Greetings to all companion travelers on this merry musical bandwagon, all readers and friends. This wish wishes to bring the blessings of good health, happiness and peace unto yourselves and your families. May this festival of lights continue to bring sparkle and brightness to home and your life. And may this brightness sustain through the entire coming year, till it is time to refresh and rekindle this greeting all over again.
Ah, this wonderful land and its festivals, all so well timed with the seasons and months. The celebrations continue around the year. Every celebration itself is the start of a new year of its own. The stories from our histories tell us about these festivals and celebrations, as also they tell us about the importance and the meaning of these celebration in our daily lives. Stories that are our roots in culture and the mainstay of our daily lives.
All such celebrations have found their way into the films. In our land, the cinema, over the decades, has become an inseparable thread weaved into the designs of our cultural fabric. And also, it is a reflection of what this society is. Every festival has also been celebrated on the silver screen. And of course, there are songs to go along with it. Aren’t they always. 🙂
Diwali is no different. Rather Diwali is extra special, and there are songs plentiful that have celebrated this festival on screen. Right since the time when the movies found the voice and the music and the song. I present today a very rare song from the film ‘Renuka’ from 1947. The film is produced under the banner of Jayant Desai Productions, and is directed by Ramesh Sehgal. The songs of this film are penned by Qamar Jalaalabaadi and the music is created by Sardar Malik. The principal cast of actors includes Mubarak, Hemawati, Afzal, Shrimati Vijaya Das, Shashi Kapoor (Sr.), Baby Vimla, Chanda Bai, Kesar Bai, Dharpurey and Sati Devi etc.
The song is sung by two singers, possibly three. However, only one singer is identified so far. The male singer happens to be the music director himself – Sardar Malik. The accompanying female voice (or maybe two female voices) are unidentified. The film has a dozen songs, of which two are already showcased here on this blog. This is the third song of this film to find its place here.
The song is an ode to the ‘diya’, the earthen lamp that is the traditional method of making light. And the singers are expressing their wishes to be fulfilled. Someone is praying for universal love, someone is praying to meet her lover, and yes, someone is wishing to become a film hero. A very interesting series of verses which are played in an interesting arrangement of singer’s and chorus voices. The last verse is a slow and a poignant verse, in the voice of a child. This child is probably separated from his mother. For the wish that he expresses to the lamps is, to know the whereabouts of his mother.
Listen to this rare sound from more than seven decades ago. And let the brightness and cheer of the lamps spread everywhere. A very Happy Diwali to all.
