These are the songs of Salil Chaudhary which are part of my first songs watching on TV chhayageet experience. I was not aware of the names of the music director and singer etc at that time, but the voice, words and melody were imprinted in the mind.
Actually I was looking for some such melodious song composed by Salil Chaudhary to include in the Series, and I found this song from Maya (1961). This is the last remaining song from the film to be posted here. This is one fine collection of songs with Rafi Solos, a Rafi-lata duet, a Lata solo and a duet of Lata-Hemant Kumar. With the lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri adding lustre to them.
This is a solo song by Asha Bhonsle with chorus. It is picturised as a dance song where someone called ‘Rani’ (?) is dancing with a group of extras and the audience are sitting and enjoying. Dev Anand is there among the men and Mala Sinha is sitting among the women. Jayant also joins in after a while.
Since this is the final song, it is time to get down to the nitty gritty and get dirty, so as to say. One just cannot always gloss over, the unpleasant incidents. I usually avoid talking about controversial topics. So here is my take on the incident during the recording of songs of this film ‘ Maya’ During the recording of the song tasweer teri dil mein jis din se utaari hai the Lata-Rafi duet, there was an altercation which happened. It appears that Lata wanted some changes in the song, Rafi had not agreed, with Salil Chaudhary siding with Lata. This led to estrangement between Salil Chaudhary and Rafi sahab and they did not work together for some years.
Salil Chaudhary is known as a Lata loyalist, so it is a change to see an Asha song during this period. I do not know how many songs Asha has sung for Salil Chaudhary, but they cannot be that many. Asha happens to have given the fiercest competition to Lata Mangeshkar. Lata was close to all the Music Directors of the older generation. Except for O.P.Nayyar all of them who formed the old guard gave rare opportunities to Asha Bhosle to sing for them. And she was able to make some important in-roads into the Lata bastions like Shankar-Jaikishan and Madan Mohan during the time when Rafi sahab and Lata Mangeshkar were not singing together in mid 60’s.
She did make the most of the period when S. D. Burman had an disagreement with Lata, and gave steller solos in Bandini and Sujata etc. Also mentionable is the extremely hummable Bhanwra bada naadaan hai from Saheb Bibi Aur Gulam for Hemant Kumar.
Of course, there are many great songs of Asha Bhonsle which are timeless classics, I have no need to list them. We can just enjoy this lilting song.
