Today (27 november 2013) is the 40th death anniversary of Bhagatram (Date of death 27 november 1973) of the Husnlal Bhagatram music director duo. It is unfortunate that little information is available about this duo who had the distinction of being the first music director duo in Hindi movies.
Husnlal Batish and Bhagartam Batish began their career with “Chaand” (1944) and ended it with “Sher Afghan” (1966). They peak years were undoubtedly from late 1940s till mid 1950s, though by that time the new generation of music directors had begun to take over.
Husnlal Bhagatram composed music for about 451 songs in 50 movies. This blog contains 164 of their compositions from 37 movies as of now.
Here is a song from “Chhoti Bhaabhi” (1950) on this occasion. This melancholic song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Karan Dewan and Nargis. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist and Husnlal Bhagatram are the music directors.
Listening to this song gave me the impression that I had heard this tune earlier in some well known song. And then it dawned upon me that this song was reminding me of the “Phagun” (1958) song Ik pardesi mera dil le gayaa. Seeing that this “Chhoti Bhaabhi” (1950) song came eight years prior to the well known “Phaagun” (1958) song, it is easy to realise which song is the original and which one is the inspiration.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.
Song-Lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho (Chhoti Bhaabhi)(1950) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics (Provided by Nitin Shah)
Lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyaar mein tere lut gaye ho
lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyaar mein tere lut gaye ho
aankhon se aansoo behte hain
aankhon se aansoo behte hain
ham chup hain aansoo kehte hain
lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyaar mein tere lut gaye ho
lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyaar mein tere lut gaye ho
dhoondh rahi hain tujhko nigaahen
dhoondh rahi hain tujhko nigaahen
kehti hain ruk ruk kar aahen
lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyaar mein tere lut gaye ho
haaye
lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyaar mein tere lut gaye ho
do lafzon ka mera fasaana
ik tera aanaa ek tera jaanaa
aanaa thhaa khushiyon ka ishaara
jaane per dil ro ke pukaara
dil ro ke pukaara
dil ro ke pukaara
lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyar mein tere lut gaye ho
haaye
lut gaye lut gaye lut gaye ho
pyaar mein tere lut gaye ho

Just came across this blog. Nice one. Coming to the composer duo Husnlal Bhagatram , surprisingly the song Ai Meri Zindagi (sung both by Talat & Lataji) does not find much mention . Personally, I feel this is one of the best songs from Talat and just listening to the initial music and the verse of the song one can become emotional ( Of course my comment does not pertain to the song from Choti Bhabhi )

I read in downmemorylane (http://www.downmelodylane.com/husnbhagat.html ) that Bhagatram’s son Ashok Sharma is a noted sitarist with Doordarshan, and lives in Mumbai with family. Does it mean that the information contained in downmemory lane has some inaccuracy ?

It is true that the surname of Husnlal-Bhagatram was ‘Batish’ and not Sharma. It is quite likely that Bhagatram’s son Ashok adopted ‘Sharma’ as his surname instead of ‘Batish’. Both these surnames are used by Punjabi Brahmins. I remember to have read that the surname ‘Batish’ was evolved from ‘Vats’ which became ‘Vatish’ and then ‘Batish’.
In page xix of the book ‘R D Burman – The Man, The Music’, I find the name of Ashok Sharma, Sitarist in the list of R D Burman’s Team. Also in http://panchammagic.org/2010/01/4th-jan-2010/ I find the name of Pandit Ashok Sharma being mentioned.
By the way, the link of the article given above is a treat for R D Burman’s fans.

The following films were given music by Bhagatram alone, initially, where he mentions his name as Bhagatram Batish. It is mentioned in HFGK also-
Bahadur Ramesh,Bhedi kumar,Chashmawali,Midnight Mail(all 1939)
Deepak Mahal,Hamara Desh,Hatimtai ki beti,Sandesh and Tatar ka chor (all 1940).
I got the Cell no. of Ashok Bhagatram Sarma, from shri Harish ji Raghuvanshi ji. However, there was no response to the rings which i heard,so I sent my query as a message, but there is still no reply from him.

This is to inform the readers that I have spoken personally to mr.Ashok Sharma, son of Bhagatram ji.
According to him, their original surname was BATISH. It is only he,who started using the surname SHARMA,as both are Punjabi Bramhin surnames.
Husnlal,Bhagatram and Pt. Amarnath all used only the surname BATISH.
