“Neki Aur Badi” (1949) was directed by Kidar Sharma for Oriental Pictures. The movie had Geeta Bali, Pesi Patel, Nazira, Madhubala, Kidar Sharma, Uma Dutt etc in it.

Kidar Sharma had signed up a debutant music director for this movie. Neither the movie nor the music of this movie left much impression at the box office and elsewhere. The failure of the music left Roshanlal Nagrath, the music director heartbroken and he even contemplated to commit suicide because he felt that there was nothing left in life for him to look forward to.

Kidar Sharma gave him moral support and encouragement to him and signed him up in his next movie as well. This movie “Baawre Nain” (1950) as well as its music did well and that helped launch the career of Roshanlal Nagrath, who went on to become famous as just Roshan. So much so that his descendents adopted this name “Roshan” as their surname ! His sons called themselves Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan and his most well known grandson is Hrithik Roshan. In Hindi movies, this is one of the few cases where the first name of a film personality was adopted as surname by his descendents.

When we look back at the songs of “Neki Aur Badi” (1949) with the benefit of hindsight, we find that the songs are not bad at all. But we have to keep this fact in mind that 1949 was an altogether different time from now. This year was a landmark year in the history of Hindi movie music which saw arguably the greatest number of musical gems getting created that went on to become timeless classics and remain so till this date. Old generation music directors churned out gems in “Badi Bahan,” “Mahal,” “Shair”, “Chaandni Raat”, “Paaras”, “Namoona”, “Dulaari”,”Daroga jee”, “Balam”, “Saawam Aaya Re”, “Zevraat”, “Rimjhim”, “Singaar”, “Ek Thhi Ladki”,”Parda”, “Naach”,”Baazaar”, “Balam”, “”Chaar Din”, “Thhes”, “Dada”, “Lahore”, “Sunahre Din”, “Patanga”, “Dillagi”,”Saawan Bhaado”, “Andaaz”,”Shabnam”, “Naach”, “Chakori”, “Raat Ki Raani”, “Jal Tarang”, “Kamal”,”Apna Desh”, “Sipahiya”,”Duniya”, “Kaneez”, “Sampati” etc etc. And then this year also saw the impressive debut of Shankar Jaikishan with their path breaking music in “Barsaat”. In all this glut of quality music, the music of “Neki Aur Badi” got elbowed out.

Now, more than six decades later, we have the luxury of savouring the songs of 1949 on their own merit and these songs of “Neki Aur Badi” (1949) no longer have to compete with other songs to attract our attention. We in this blg and elsewhere have space for all musical composition, including those that failed to catch the ears of the music lovers during their time.

Four songs from “Neki Aur Badi” (1949) have been discussed in the blog. Here is the fifth song from the movie. This song is sung by Rajkumari and it is written by Kidar Sharma. This song, that remains a lesser known and heard song even now, is quite a nice song to listen to.

Only the audio of this song is available and so it is difficult to say how and on whom this song is picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Hamen bhaane lage (Neki Aur Badi)(1949) Singer-Rajkumari, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

hamen bhaane lage
dil lubhaane lage
lo wo sapnon ki duniya basaane lage
basaane lage
hamen bhaane lage
dil lubhaane lage
lo wo sapnon ki duniya basaane lage
basaane lage
muskuraane lage
dil churaane lage
wo nigaahon se bijli giraane lage
giraane lage
hamen bhaane lage

laakh armaan dil mein machalne lage
laakh armaan dil mein machalne lage
meri rag rag se naghme nikalne lage
meri rag rag se naghme nikalne lage
gungunaane lage
chahchahaane lage
mere honthhon pe tum thharthharaane lage
thharthharaane lage
hamen bhaane lage

yaad hardam tumhaari sataane lagi
yaad hardam tumhaari sataane lagi
aankh raaz e muhabbat chhupaane lagi
aankh raaz e muhabbat chhupaane lagi
sar jhhukaane lage
munh phiraane lage
hum zamaane se nazren bachaane lage
bachaane lage
hamen bhaane lage

chhed jaatin hain kaali ghataayen sajan
chhed jaatin hain kaali ghataayen sajan
jee jalaane lage thhandi aahen sajan
jee jalaane lage thhandi aahen sajan
dil ko bhaane lage
lo rulaane lage
haay saawan ke din bhi jalaane lage
jalaane lage
hamen bhaane lage

What to say:
mere rag rag se naghme nikalne lage
gungunaane lage
chahchahaane lage
mere honthhon pe tum thharthharaane lage

Heard it for the first song.
Quite a good number. I liked it.
But as you have pointed out it (and the other songs in the film) may have suffered in comparison to other gems.
Only after I had seen Nitin ji’s comment, I noticed the beauty of the lyrics.
Kidar (Kedar) Sharma was a very good poet, who because of his deep involvement with other aspects of film making, could not devote much attention to this area (poetry / lyrics).
Thank you very much.

Avadh Lal
