This is the fifth song in the series ” VINTAGE KISHORE “. It is from the film Pyaar-1950, in which Kishore kumar has sung for Raj Kapoor. Film Pyaar-50 was a Sunrise Pictures,Bombay’s presentation and it was directed by V.M.Vyas.
V.M.Vyas or Vishnukumar Maganlal Vyas was born on 4-10-1905 at Ahmedabad. He started his career with silent films as a cinematographer in the film Kala Bhoot-1932 (or Black Ghost or Kalo Bhoot in Gujarati). He began directing Talkie films with Saubhagya Laxmi-34 and went on to direct about 30 odd films till his last film namely Apsara in 1961. He had written the story and screenplay of the film Bhakta Raj-1960 which he also directed. He acted in the film Akashpari-1958. Some of his famous films are Garib ka Lal-39 ( an interesting song from this film with the names of 32 film artistes in its lyrics-” tujhe Bibbo kahun ya Sulochana “, was posted on this Blog by our own Sudhir ji on the occasion of his 500th Post on 28-2-2013), Ghar ki laaj-41, Maa-Baap-44 (film with the same title of Maa-Baap was again made in 1960 and this too was directed by V M Vyas), Ghar Sansaar, Duhai, Apsara etc.
V M Vyas was also active on the Gujarati scene. He had directed the film Ranak Devi-1946, in which Nirupa Roy had made her Debut in Gujarati films.
The lead pair of Pyaar-50 was Raj Kapoor and Nargis. This was their 4th film together. They acted in 16 films together as a lead pair.
Raj had started as a hero from Neelkamal-1947 and Pyaar-50 was his 12th film. Only two of these 12 films were from his RK Productions and rest were from other productions. He was a professionsal in his approach towards work and when he worked in films made by others, he never ever interfered with the work of Directors or composers, though he himself was a Director and a connoisseur of music. This was in stark contrast to Dilip Kumar, who was in the habit of interfering in almost all departments, like Direction, Music composition, Lyrics, editing or even camera work. Due to his this habit, once Dilip had a spat with composer Sajjad Hussain and the producer-K.Asif- had supported Sajjad Hussain in that incident.
Dev Anand was also known to interfere in every pie, but that was only to ensure that HE got the maximum footage and screen space and not to show off his knowledge unlike Dilip.
Among Dilip, Dev and Raj Trio, it was Raj who was the youngest, but the irony of fate was that it was he who died first, before Dev or Dilip-who is luckily still with us. Raj kapoor was strange in some matters. Adventurous and Dynamic in film making, Raj was mortally afraid of heights. He avoided flying by air and preferred Train travels, except for foreign trips, where he never moved from his seats while flying all the way. Due to this fear he never slept on cots. he always slept on floors-even in 5 star hotels ! Raj was very close to his mother, who was only 16 years older to him and Father who was just 18 years older that Raj. Whenever his Mother visited RK studio, Raj would proudly take her around and show her things.
Pyaar was the First and probably the last time Raj had playback from Kishore. Starting with Neelkamal, it was Mukesh, Snehal bhatkar and Narayan Dutt who sang for him. In jail yatra he himself sang in the film. Later Rafi, Ninu Mujumdar and Sailesh Mukherjee also sang for him. Pyaar was not a film of RK studios, nor had he become so big as to select his own Playback singer, so he settled for Kishore. He had heard him in Ziddi earlier. Even otherwise, as stated earlier, Raj would not have interfered with the Compser on any issue.
S D Burman was giving music to his film for the second time, the first being film ‘Chitod Vijay’-47. I personally feel that Kishore’s voice and singing style was not matching to Raj Kapoor. Probably thecomposers of later years also thought like me and no one tried Kishore on Raj again !
As for Kishore, it was immaterial at that stage whether he sang for Raj or anybody else. He was happy to sing as a Playback singer and that was enough for him. Later of course he sang only for himself and Dev Anand.
From Aradhana, when he sang for Rajesh Khanna and succeeded immensely, he announced that he will give his voice only to Rajesh Khanna if the song involves other actors. His liking for Rajesh Khanna (or was it his gratitude, for making his secont stint in singing extraordinarily successful) was so much that together with R D Burman, he sang for Rajesh Khanna in 32 films and in totality for 91 films for Rajesh khanna. This must be a record, I think.
More about Raj Kapoor and Kishore Kumar when we discuss two other songs of Kishore in film Pyaar-50 later on sometime.
Today, let us enjoy this typical Vintage Kishore song. It is written by Rajinder Krishan. Lyrics of this song were provided by Nitin Shah.

ABOUT V.M. VYAS-
He had made a great pair with writer Mohanlal Gopalji Dave, popularly known as ‘Mohan Bapa’ at that time! Most of the films, made by Vyas, were written by Mohan Bapa. It’s claimed that he had written more than 300 films during his career (1916 to 1960), which may be a World Record! He was a very ‘professional’ writer & was one of the very few writers who had a bunglow in Mumbai at santacruz,
